@bookstodon I'm currently #reading Beyond Good and Evil by Nietzsche. I must admit I don't find his idea of a universal drive for power compelling.

It relies first and foremost upon an invisible subconscious that we cannot reach or touch inside all of us that tells us to always seek more power. And that anything other than we do is just justification for our power grabs.

My problem with this is how... When you start out looking for it it is easy to say that anything anyone does is a power grab. Getting out of bed is an excercise of our dominion over gravity etc etc..

Does a child draw letters in the sand merely to signal that they have power over sand? Is wearing cool and shiny boots a way of signalling social power over others? Maybe. But in my mind it is unlikely to be the most compelling reason behind everything... Solely because most people do not behave like cartoon villains. Or even cartoon villains trying to camoflage themselves.

I admit. I am only 70 pages in and a very novice philopher at best. But as it stands... I don't think a drive to power as envisioned by Nietzsche is a universal truth.

3. The Desert Storm by Blue_Sunshine excellent storytelling, absolutely massive, (to the extent it reminds me of Saving Connor) still updating. This is a series of fics under a collection. Has a wide host of OC's and some excellent storytelling and development of Shmi's character. Later parts feature an incredibly scary Darth Plaegious. With all that said, it's pace is at times disappointingly slow, and I don't like Anakin, who the later parts focus on. https://archiveofourown.org/series/1311746

@rm4 btw I know that there is a lot of fediverse software out there, and... hmmm. What kind of community do we want to build? What are our design goals?

One thing that I really, really like about mastodon (and to a lesser extent twitter, before it went to shit) was the personality of the place--you see a username, and you start to get to know the regulars.

One thing I don't like with reddit, is that it is very information organised. I see the post, and I see the comments, but the way it is structured and laid out, I don't pay attention to the handles. I see information, but not people.

I wonder if that would be the same with lemmy/kbin.

Also how do different magazines integrate with each other? On this point I am merely curious, as I don't have a lemmy or kbin account. What happens when there is a starwars magazine on one instance, and a duplicate on a different instance?

While Firefish/Calckey channels don't federate, I wonder if they might be a better way of discussing things, more... more in line with old school forum vibes than reddit vibes.

I have like 1.7k posts on mastodon now, which feels wild. Because I never really intended to stay here for so long... I didn't find the software as easy to use as what I was used to.

But I loved the customisability, and the vibe of a bunch of independent social media is nice. Even if it is nowhere near the size of twitter.

Good things that have happened to me today:

1. I was able to revise some of my lecture slides. It is a privilege to be able to study as I am at university.

2. I was able to drink a nice cup of tea. Generic Assam with milk and honey.

3. I was able to watch my car lounging in the sun. She was quite cute, nibbling on a peice of grass.

I did the #daily #CavesOfQud build. Died horribly (this is the way) quite proud of what I achieved though. It was a fun break from reality. exploring a procedurally generated high tech-low-life fantasy swamp. Love me a good chrome revolver and salve injector.

Do you use beta readers?

It depends on who is available. I mostly write fanfic for my own pleasure. Sometimes I have my partner proof read my university assignments.

The most important thing about beta readers is if they have anything useful to say. Have a look at some of their own writing. If it's dogshit, they won't make a good beta reader. If their style of writing is very different from yours--they will likely make suggestions that clash with your vision.

But they are very very good at spotting proof reading errors you did not.

I just drove my partner through the Lindis Pass yesterday. My partner is from one of the biggest cities in the world, and grew up in HK. Very city girl. Big cities like that is something I want to experience but haven't been able to yet because of finance (it's hard being a broke student). Sometimes I feel very sad when she sends me pictures of taller buildings than I have ever seen in my life. Or big crowds. These things are things I aspire to see some day.

But I am proud to have been able to show her something really really special and relatively close to my home. God's own high country.

I just finished The Thousand Earths by S. Baxter. It was very, very good. It explored a breadth of settings that was stitched together by brief interludes of a 22nd century traveler. While I enjoyed it and thought it well constructed and excellently laid out, I was saddened by how setting driven it was, as opposed to character driven.

Never thought the day would come where I wanted to read about a love plot in my scifi.

That said why does it seem like so many books are about humanity at the heat death of the universe? That's what my last scifi book was on too...

I ask because I write fanfiction. And it is nice to browse fandom spaces like blorbo.social. However, I'm not particularly keen on needing to make a seperate account for every server, so I tend to interact with this account.
