Carbon credits for tree planting should only ever be loans. Repayable if the forest is ever cut down, or burns in a forest fire, or anything else.

ojala,
@ojala@mastodon.nz avatar

@richardh That's how it works unless you use averaging accounting, in that you only receive units upto a long term average (lower than the total in a rotation) to simplify management. https://www.mpi.govt.nz/forestry/forestry-in-the-emissions-trading-scheme/emissions-returns-and-carbon-units-nzus-for-forestry/accounting-for-carbon-in-the-ets/

I'm turning 50 this summer and I appreciate things so differently than I did just a couple of years ago. I find fruit miraculous. And birds and leaves and air. I lost three people this year already, none of them made it to 50. I'm in a state of numbness from the grief. Just the sound of the rain helps ground me back in my life. When people slip away you feel like you're going with them, a little.

ojala,
@ojala@mastodon.nz avatar

@leahdriel It's interesting how perspectives change with age and experiences. Some things become irrelevant, while others (like fruit) are a source of wonder.

I'll concede I'm still a beginner when it comes to writing my own makefiles, but even so it makes me so happy that this works 🎉

@djnavarro I see makefiles and latex preambles with the same sense of awe and respect. Sort of a carved calendar in a pre-Columbian temple.

I know, many people think this defeats the purpose of the tablet format, but I much prefer typing to tapping. So I’ve bought this little Arteck keyboard for my iPad Mini 6, and I think it’s an amazing tool. Sure, the keys are small, but the action’s not bad, and the size doesn’t seem to be a problem for my piano-playing fingers. Two negatives: the apostrophe and double quote require a function key, and the Delete key is not on the top row as muscle memory insists it should be.

ojala,

@leighelse It looks more usable than Apple's foldable keyboard cover. I hope it works well for your trip.

Just as I start to warm to TOP, I find they're campaigning for deregulation of gene-editing. In fact they have been at it for at least 4 years:

ojala,

@strypey I think opposition to GM in New Zealand is a weird thing. "Deregulation" is a weird word, as in NZ we have a de facto ban.

At least in trees, it has been very difficult to do anything after the destruction of trials some years ago.

Wife is currently on phone lecturing a business analyst that having the menu items for “Keep My Hard Work” and “Throw Away A Day’s Work” next to each other is a bad idea.

And that regularly having staff Throw Away A Day’s Work is actually wasteful.

Business analyst sounds very surprised and also doesn’t understand importance.

ojala,

@futuresprog It reminds me the touchbar virtual ESC key in macs. I would barely touch it by accident and would cancel a window. I kept on losing work until I remapped it.

@davew @dave This type of analysis starts by assuming that success is moving a large proportion of users to a single new service.

Who stays and who moves is also important. Trolls stay, some good people move, some stay. Most of my conversations go via Fediverse now. Providing that option was and is a success; not everyone will take it, for multiple reasons, but it is there.

This morning in London I saw this warning sign on a tanker that looked (from the text on the outside) as though it was carrying Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil - HVO, a biofuel made from vegetable oil, I think.

Given the apparently unhappy status of the fish and the tree, it’s not really selling itself as the way to a safer and more biologically sensitive future. But, you know, better to be honest about it.

ojala,
@ojala@mastodon.nz avatar

@helenczerski You'd likely get the same sign for cooking oil: toxic in waterways.

We're hearing a lot about the greenhouse gas emissions "leakage" argument from farmers who don't want to change. Proponents claim that New Zealand's farmers are the most GHG-efficient pastoralists in the world, and that reducing greenhouse gas emissions from farms in New Zealand will result in increases in GHG emissions elsewhere. It's a bit like the "we're too small to matter" argument, in that it assumes people elsewhere will not try to solve the problem. 1/

@TreeStarMan In my head I replace the argument and say "we should stop slavery" and someone replying "but other countries will continue with slavery, and we are nicer slave masters".
