Browsing through backups of my own projects (not freelance!) I have a lot of games that I've started making, spent several weeks or months on and not finished. I mean, I do finish at least one game a year, so that's something, but I think the ratio of unfinished to finished is probs about 4:1. feel like this isn't the best use of my time as a 'making money' person but is probably the best use of my time as a 'making games' person. It's all learning and I may go back to some of these one day..

@psychicparrot42 I don't think the game you manage to finish every year (that's a big achievement, to me) could exist without the other unfinished ones... 🤷‍♂️

A persistent muffled miaow behind me indicates that Pippin has brought me one of his toys as a gift (it was in his mouth). He won’t stop until you acknowledge his gift 😄

He does this all the time, he has lots of little wool toys Marie made for him and he carries them around the house, sometimes in the middle of the night (and telling us all about it) 🙄

@sinbad I have this conversation every single time I talk to people that never lived with cats.

    @psychicparrot42 I see my friends (same experience or even less) working in other branches of programming and earning two or three times what I earn and I wonder why am I still doing this.

    Then they tell me about their day to day work life and I think that, in their place, I would go completely bonkers in less than a month.

    🤷‍♂️

    Jesus Christ, I'm in a situation where Unity's fake null check causes havoc.

    I can't wait to switch to an engine that doesn't override the null equality check. I hate that thing so much :(

    oldschoolpixels,
    @oldschoolpixels@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

    @Nifflas one of the worst design decisions in unity, IMO.

    oldschoolpixels,
    @oldschoolpixels@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

    @Nifflas yeah, it would be very breaking. To be honest, I don't even know how easy it would be to change implementation, because (I don't know if you're aware) it stems from Unity's architecture itself.

    oldschoolpixels,
    @oldschoolpixels@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

    @Nifflas ok, I stand corrected 😬 It wouldn't be that hard.

    I have a netiquette question: in alt-texting an image that contains some code, does it make sense to transcribe the code itself into the description? Do folks who use screen readers even need that or do they prefer a broad description of what the code does?

    oldschoolpixels,
    @oldschoolpixels@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

    @SirLich Thanks. I was just wondering if having a screen reader reading a bunch of code was obnoxious, but then again there are a lot of programmers using screen readers around here. So it was a silly question after all. 😅

    @aetataureate "statistical generative models", a bit wordy but covers both text large language models and stable diffusion image/video models, I believe

    oldschoolpixels,
    @oldschoolpixels@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

    @aetataureate No, thank you for caring about the language issue: it's a personal battle of mine to niptick about not calling these things "AIs", because the name is just marketing and VERY misleading.

    well this is unexpected, I recently switched to Firefox to escape this shift to AI in the other browsers and will you look at that, Firefox is scaling back on VPN and Relay and investing into AI on the browser. Oh well https://techcrunch.com/2024/02/13/mozilla-downsizes-as-it-refocuses-on-firefox-and-ai-read-the-memo/

    i am thinking about roguelike resource flow. it's interesting that a lot of the classic games have resting to restore health as a mechanic. it's a tiered system:

    larger: (food clock -> health)
    mid: micro decisions which reduce health loss

    oldschoolpixels,
    @oldschoolpixels@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

    @lorenschmidt ok, what if it's some kind cyberspace thing and you can regain life energy by absorbing almost everything in the game: a key, a weapon, en exit button...?

    could be difficult to balance, I think

    been trying to convert my wordpress blog to static content and after a bunch of time I gave up on jekyll, the dependencies alone are a nightmare to get running, had issues in Linux and Mac, I think this will be a problem to maintain in the long run, even if I make a stable VM (...)

    I had a good, although somewhat hacky, experience with Zola: https://www.oldschoolpixels.com/blog/site-building/

    Anyway, I think I'll never go back to a cms again: my site is like ten times faster now.

    @djlink Hugo and Zola are quiet similar. I chose the latter mostly because of a personal preference towards their templating syntax.

    @aeva I never have them, but I have a friend who trained themselves to trigger them and I am very jealous.

    They use a notebook on the bedstand to immediately write down the content of their dreams when they wake up. I don't know exactly how, but they tell me this helps learning how to trigger them.
