@owncast@mxks And hey...this is Kit, the person behind @mxks and the Owncast Newsletter! I'd love to have some friends along for the ride developing the #Owncast#Roku channel! DM me or email me if you're interested in helping!
Owncast exists to be the infrastructure behind your live streams, whatever content or style or audience they might be.
If you have thoughts or ideas that you think would benefit live streamers, please reach out.
This isn't necessarily so we can implement every idea that is suggested. But each thought and concern has a conversation behind it that can benefit everyone. Without these conversations, the project can't know what is most useful, and can't grow.
Owncast offers a small number of free, hosted servers for those that could make use of them. This is both to help out those who otherwise wouldn't be able to try out independent live streaming, and to get the project in front of more people.
If you or somebody you know is interested in the Owncast donated server program, read more:
If you're in the area, and able, think about adopting Ringo, the 13-year-old star tortoise. Otherwise, he could use some donations to support him in having a good life!
Drop by his live stream and say hi. He doesn't move much, but that makes the payoff even sweeter when he is up and about.
Last month @gabek spoke to the attendees of @ubuntu Summit in Riga, Latvia, about Owncast and how live video streaming works.
I can’t promise it’s the most entertaining thing you’ll watch all day, but if you’re into #Owncast, or even streaming video in general, you might get something from it.
@owncast
Still, YouTube is probably the best example of the type of abusive monopolies that federated platforms are trying to fight (and such video platforms like Owncast are fighting directly). I'd call that ironic, whether it's normal or not.
Thanks to a suggestion from @roadriverrail we're seeing if there's any interest in a periodic Owncast community email. The idea is to feature streamers, share tips, highlight releases, and try to reach out a bit more.
If you think this should exist, feel free to throw your email into the hat. If nobody is interested, that's cool too! Like always, we only want to create things people actually want.
There are a few methods, pick the best for you. Here's an example, using the installation script. No npm, no pip, no Ruby gems. Just get up and running, so you can start streaming.
@kurth@gdt We’re 110% up for somebody supporting the packages for the major Linux distributions. It’s just not something the project can take on itself.
Owncast will be at #Ubuntu Summit in Riga, Latvia November 3-5!
Gabe, the project maintainer, will be giving a talk about self-hosting live video streams and how Owncast might be able to help you do that on the 4th, at noon.
Plan on saying hi to Gabe, because he has cool pins (and stickers, of course) to give you.
