Sometimes, my stupidity amazes me. I can't grasp the steps in order to setup an server via hetzner

owncast,
@owncast@fosstodon.org avatar

@omniscion I know Hetzner has their own install environment, but if you ever want to drop by our chat, somebody else who uses Hetzner might be able to point you in the right direction. https://owncast.rocket.chat/

@omniscion One of our community members just saw this conversation and passed along this tutorial that was written. https://community.2tonwaffle.com/topic/11/owncast-instance-setup

Oh, neat...there's a channel points bot available for @owncast now too. Urge to hack on python code rising...

@vintprox @trentskunk Sometimes! Owncast is used for all kinds of things, user-generated content is certainly one of them. But it’s probably used even more as video infrastructure for companies, events, venues, etc. But the user-generated content is going to be the most visible for obvious reasons.

Still mulling over my approach to live video here on the while the build streams are on hold for a few weeks.

Put the server on pause for a bit to give them time to get a couple more milestones under their belt, and haven’t yet activated live streaming on our .

I want to get the Frankie Play stuff going again but not sure there’s any audience for it here. Here’s a recent Twitch VoD.

@operationpuppet Please do feel free to file issues for anything that you have in mind. Without hearing from people we can’t know what is on people’s minds. Sorry to see you go!

Quick newbie question. When using @owncast , can I broadcast the stream live and save a recording of the "master" output at the same time? (Assuming saving of the stream is an option in the first place, which I'm not sure about ...)

owncast,
@owncast@fosstodon.org avatar

@fedithom You would want to save it from the broadcasting side.

Anyone on here who has been brave enough to start an OwnCast server...

I've never done this before but have an old Chromebook I could convert into a server. If I did so, would it likely be strong enough to hold up to occasional streaming endeavors or nah? I'd mostly be sharing some of my physical media with folks to watch together.

owncast,
@owncast@fosstodon.org avatar

@literalgrill @lefractal There's no single answer to these kinds of questions, but maybe this document can be helpful: https://owncast.online/docs/resources-requirements/

@owncast i'm even more appreciative of you now! Having started that #lemmy #owncast just a day ago, I've already been told by people obviously mich smarter tgan you or I how impossible owncast is. So now that we know that the software we're using, and you wrote, can't ever work, I guess we'll just pack it in huh? /s

Thank you again btw. People are insufferable and I'm sure you've already heard the garbage I'm getting and yet you trudge on. So thank you! You are appreciated.

owncast,
@owncast@fosstodon.org avatar

@Longplay_Games @ozoned I hear it all the time, and I’m really not sure why. They gain nothing personally by talking people out of it, so I can only guess they tie some of their identity to the services they use, and would feel bad if people find there are alternatives to them? But that’s just a guess. Thanks for understanding and standing strong!

owncast,
@owncast@fosstodon.org avatar

@neatnit @ozoned It's the mindset that companies and Big Tech can do it, but individuals can't. I actually address this in my Ubuntu Summit talk https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sZMEuKI4Lpo. My argument is that people treat streaming video like black magic that regular people can't possibly harness, so if it can be demystified and clarified how it actually works, then people will believe that it's far more approachable than they think and believe they can run their own too.

I have been testing #Owncast a bit and it looks very interesting!

owncast,
@owncast@fosstodon.org avatar

@nuekaze There is no notion of a "channel". Owncast is single-user, infrastructure software. You install it to run your video stream. It's not a service for others, but software for you. It's not meant to replace Twitch or YouTube or whatever.

Looking for an android client that will just let me play the @eulerroom stream without logging in to anything.

I was unable to get any of the ones listed on fdroid to do this, but perhaps this was a UI problem and not a functionality problem?

owncast,
@owncast@fosstodon.org avatar

@lps @celesteh @eulerroom You already don't need to log into anything to watch an Owncast powered stream. Alternatively, many native video players will play the stream out of the box. VLC, for example.

Last month @gabek spoke to the attendees of @ubuntu Summit in Riga, Latvia, about Owncast and how live video streaming works.

I can’t promise it’s the most entertaining thing you’ll watch all day, but if you’re into , or even streaming video in general, you might get something from it.

Enjoy!

@bojanland Have you had a chance to look through the documentation? Everything should be answered there. You asked a handful of different questions in your post, so I can’t answer them all here, but this might help.

A place to start: https://owncast.online/quickstart/

owncast,
@owncast@fosstodon.org avatar

@masimatutu Not really. Ubuntu does their own thing. Lots of companies put videos on YouTube.

owncast,
@owncast@fosstodon.org avatar

@masimatutu I agree. But Owncast has no control over what Ubuntu does as a company.

experts I'm having a difficult time finding information about how to host @owncast locally (as in do all the stream encoding) but serve it through a cheap VPS, so that I'm not exposing my residential IP address. Is that possible? I would appreciate any tips or links to resources.

I'm using a digital ocean droplet with the Owncast referral code but I won't be using it enough to justify ~$20/mo after the promotional credit runs out.

owncast,
@owncast@fosstodon.org avatar

@shom I'm sure you could hack something together, but that's not Owncast is built to run, so it wouldn't be something you could do out of the box. You can absolutely host Owncast locally (I run an instance from my apartment), but it's public on the internet. A couple of people have mentioned a VPN or other type of tunnel, so maybe that's the answer. But honestly, I'm not sure, it's not really an Owncast-specific thing.
