Here's one thing I dislike about mastodon.

I've got a friend that I'd like very much to follow from another instance. Problem? His instance is blocking mine. There is absolutely nothing I can do, besides writing to the mods of my instance and ask them why it is blocked, which I have a pretty good idea as to why already anyway, thanks to a friend we have in common. And all of that so I can talk to this one friend over there? Bloody unlikely they would reconsider.

I should be able to bypass that block for a specific user. I'm really, really annoyed right now, and sad I won't be able to follow this friend unless one of us move to another instance. I don't want to move and I'm pretty sure neither does he. So... We're both screwed over, I guess.

@xogium This is why I wish the Fediverse was set up in a more peer-to-peer manner where the sole blocking power comes from the user. Why can't we be able to "block all users from server X except for user Y"?

There's a lot of peer pressure on how to just EXIST here I didn't really see on Twitter. Some time it feels like one is being bombarded on all sides.

I think, as I decided on Twitter ages ago, I will commit to being civil and respectful, but beyond that it's my timeline and follows and I'll use them as I please.

Right, because preventing people who want to talk to their friends on other platforms is the way to make decentralised social media work, yeah? I thought the whole point of interooperability was to, you know, interoperate? And then if you need to block, actually block the bad people doing bad things, not the entire universe of people that just happen to be using the same carrier as them either due to lack of tech savvy or their own network lock in effect?

This is basically collective punishment and does not in any way entice other people to leave Big Social. Hoe can we convince them to come over if we're blocked from talking to them in the first place?

Hah so I realise it's been just about a year almost to the day that I first joined and at the time I thought I would never leave mastodon.social for anything else, despite everyone pointing out the general pattern of migration from it once one has become sufficiently accustomed to the Fediverse.

But thanks to @dr_xadium finally jumping from Twitter (after totally vowing he would never do so and seeing how fancy the Calckey instance he joined was (you can quote posts and there's no drama!) now here I am.

By way of , I am a and self-published who works far too slowly for her own liking and who is horribly introverted.

Twitter was my one social network of choice and I had cultivated an amazing milieu of people to follow and learn from, and then that irritant techbro just completely ruined it all. Thus, to the Fediverse I came.

Where I go from here is anyone's guess. I look forward to engaging with all you fantastic people!

I don't think Mastodon will fail. I like the people I've met here by and large, but I am still extremely concerned by the way defederation can work at the server level as opposed to the user level and it doesn't seem like most think this is a problem. I want to reach the wider world and vice versa without being invisibly prevented from doing so. Maybe this is selfish of me, but if I'm honest that's my use case for social media. I want news and information and discourse and while Mastodon is making strides, if the fediverse is just going to unilaterally cut off a huge part of the world, I will have a choice to make on where to have my main presence.
