‘A 1-year-old could get an abortion under this’ bill: far-right GOP lawmaker (www.rawstory.com)

A far-right Republican state senator explaining his opposition to a bill that would grant an abortion exception for rape or incest told his fellow lawmakers, a “1-year-old could get an abortion under this.”Senator Bill Eigel, a pro-Trump Republican who is also running to become Missouri's next governor

“1-year-old could get an abortion under this.”

“Odd take, but okay Senator, how old do you think a raped child or a child victim of incest should have to be before they are allowed to get an abortion? What age should a child victim have to look forward to, under your version of this legislation, that they know they could abort their rapists baby?”

Agreed but there is an important win here:

Isreal Easterday, 23, was arrested in Florida in December 2022 and was found guilty in October on several counts, including felony charges of civil disorder and assaulting officers.

No more gun ownership for him, nor voting rights (in most states). He’s removed himself from the most important parts of political discourse.

Something else I’m interested in seeing in the future is the sentence of a second conviction for some of these folks in the future when they inevitably decide to try some kind of insurrection again. What does sentencing look like for a two time insurrectionist?

Biden: what would Trump have done if the Capitol riots had been led by Black Americans? (www.theguardian.com)

Joe Biden has launched one of his most scathing attacks yet on Donald Trump’s record of racism, suggesting that the former US president would have acted differently to the January 6 2021 insurrection if was led by Black people....

Not opening the door wouldn’t save you. There was a no-knock warrant where a man was woken up when the police had kicked in his door and shined a light in his face. He had a gun next to his bed (I can’t remember if he was even holding it). He had been awake something like less than 8 seconds before the cops shot him because they saw the gun.

“We’re going to put our full trust in science that can’t be questioned?”

You can absolutely question science, Aaron. Doing science is the act of questioning science. However, you actually have to follow the scientific method to do it, and so far Aaron, you’re not.

If you ever want to get out of the practice of bullshit and into the practice of science, you’d be quite welcome, but its got to be science with rigor and reproducible results. Until then, you’re just talking, not scientifically questioning.

If I understand correctly, they were trying to get funding to put nuclear plants back online.

That doesn’t sound like Ohio. That did occur in Michigan though.

Ohio was bribery of the Republican party, including the Speaker of the House (another Republican), signed by the Republican Governor to force passage of legislation that subsidizes coal and nuclear power. The reason they needed subsidies was because they were unprofitable. Meanwhile government regulators denied commercial grade solar projects because they said it wouldn’t benefit rate payer (electricity customers). The solar project wasn’t even asking for subsidies, just approval to put the solar farm in.

That former Republican speaker of the House is now in prison. The legislation passed because the bribes is still on the books and Ohioans are still paying the higher rates so the Electricity companies get the profits they wanted (and bribed for). That Republican Governor that signed it, is still the Governor of Ohio.

“An EBT card does nothing to promote nutrition at a time when childhood obesity has become an epidemic,” Iowa Republican Gov. Kim Reynolds said in the news release.”

“While yes, EBT card is useful to buy all kinds of healthy food such as fresh produce, staples such as beans and rice, as well as great protein choices such as chicken, pork or beef, you may not be aware that EBT card can also buy sugar! And, you may not be aware, its possible for someone to consume enough sugar to gain weight. Therefore the GOP solution is to remove the EBT card which grants access to this sugar (as well as all the other food). By doing this those children that are overweight will effectively be put on a starvation diet where their bodies will slowly first digest their body’s muscle and put their liver at risk by forcing ketosis. Those children that don’t happen to be overweight, and will suffer tremendously, should have thought about that before they let all their peers eat too much.” /s

Marijuana was considered a black person drug. If you didn’t know, the US kinda hates black people, statistically speaking. It’s pretty fucked up!

John Ehrlichman, Assistant to the President for Domestic Affairs under President Richard Nixon said the following:

“You want to know what this [war on drugs] was really all about? The Nixon campaign in 1968, and the Nixon White House after that, had two enemies: the antiwar left and black people. You understand what I’m saying?

“We knew we couldn’t make it illegal to be either against the war or black, but by getting the public to associate the hippies with marijuana and blacks with heroin, and then criminalizing both heavily, we could disrupt those communities. We could arrest their leaders, raid their homes, break up their meetings, and vilify them night after night on the evening news.”

"Did we know we were lying about the drugs? Of course we did.”

This is a disaster of a bill. It’s basically expanding any criticism of Israel to be considered antisemitism.

I went to the link but its a livestream which at the time I tuned it didn’t seem to be giving the context you’re describing.

I’m looking at the text of the bill and it looks like the definition is locked to a specific timed definition:

“(1) means the definition of antisemitism adopted on May 26, 2016, by the IHRA, of which the United States is a member, which definition has been adopted by the Department of State;” source

Further the May 26, 2016 definition appears to be this:

On 26 May 2016, the Plenary in Bucharest decided to:

“Adopt the following non-legally binding working definition of antisemitism :”

“Antisemitism is a certain perception of Jews, which may be expressed as hatred toward Jews. Rhetorical and physical manifestations of antisemitism are directed toward Jewish or non-Jewish individuals and/or their property, toward Jewish community institutions and religious facilities.”

source

I see no mention of Israel being protected from any kind of criticism in either one of these. It looks like criticism of Israel isn’t being restricted here.

What are you seeing that would contradict what I’m seeing the text of the law?

Quite a bit more complicated with important distinctions. The biggest differences are where the combustion is occurring.

So from what I understand, previous rockets shot exhaust out the back in a cone shape. That essentially sprays the exhaust out kind of like a shotgun.

Not really. In a bell nozzle engine (which is the traditional rocket engine everyone knows about), the combustion is happening at the far inside of the bell, and the bell is shaped so that all the fuel is burned inside the bell at a specific air pressure. The thrust is provided by the burned fuel which is traveling at high speed. If the air pressure goes down (because your rocket is now higher), you’re losing unburned fuel out of the bell, and its providing no thrust. This is the limitation of bell nozzles.

Example. These are the essentially the same rocket engine. The one on the left has a smaller bell (called a skirt) because its sized for air pressure at sea level (which is high). The one on the right is size for the vacuum of space where there is essentially no air pressure.

https://lemmy.world/pictrs/image/fed4eb3d-6de8-43e8-bab9-014d348c0701.png

Wouldn’t it be great if there was a single engine that worked great at sea level and equally great in vacuum? That brings us too…

This adds a donut shaped ring of plasma around the tip of the cone which focuses the exhaust into a tighter stream, more like a laser, improving thrust.

Not exactly. What you’re describing is called a regular ** “aerospike” rocket engine**, which some designs do have a cone in the middle. What makes the shape so useful it that air pressure pushes the combustion against the cone (spike) at the perfect degree at sea level and in vacuum so that it is very efficient for burning all the fuel without loss.

The problems with aerospike rocket engines is they are VERY heavy, and that cone in the middle gets CRAZY HOT and has a tendency to melt down while the rocket engine is firing

Neat!

The “neat!” is the engine the article is talking about which you haven’t described yet. This would be the Rotating Detonation Rocket Engine!

To our slow human eyes it kind of looks like a regular aerospike, but if you slow motion it, you’d see that the flame isn’t constant all the way around the cone. A RDE engine has single flame that is racing around the circle and contained by shockwave from the previous combustion.

https://lemmy.world/pictrs/image/538f2a30-aec6-4958-9f90-0208b82daaca.png

This also means the cone in the middle stays much cooler, which means it can be made much lighter and not melt down.

Babylon 5 - It has a bit of a slow start with the first season (just the 1990’s Trek shows), but it picks up about midway through season 1 and gets progressively better (higher stakes) until season 4. Season 5 is okay, and then there are series of movies, and recently even an animated show in the universe.

In a statement, Kentucky Attorney General Russell Coleman accused President Biden of being “willing to sacrifice the American auto industry and its workers in service of its radical green agenda.”

If you look up the 10 most “Made in America” cars, the top 4 slots by a huge margin are Tesla Model 3,Y,S,X , which are all EVs, and they are at near 100% (or 100% for some models). There isn’t another American car brand on the list. So when Coleman is talking about sacrificing American auto workers, who’s he talking about? A car that is 40% American because all the parts are made in China or Mexico and there’s some final assembly done in the USA?

P.S. Musk is an idiot, though I’m not sure that needs to be said anymore as its so obvious.

LAKE HAVASU CITY, Ariz. — Arizona GOP Senate hopeful Kari Lake told supporters they can “strap on a Glock” to be prepared for the intensity of the 2024 campaign and urged military and law enforcement veterans to be “ready,” as her race heats up in a key battleground state.

Wow, is Lake advocating for fascists to be attacked by military and law enforcement?

“We need to send people to Washington, D.C., that the swamp does not want there,” Lake said toward the end of a Sunday speech to a crowd of Arizonans in Mohave County. “And I can think of a couple people they don’t want there. First on that list is Donald J. Trump; second is Kari Lake.”

Hmm, she’s now speaking in the third person. Ms, is Kari in the room right now? Can I talk to the Kari personality now?

“[Trump]’s willing to sacrifice everything I am."

She speaks the truth! Trump is willing to sacrifice anyone to his goals no matter how small or petty.

"That’s why they’re coming after us with lawfare, they’re going to come after us with everything.

“Lawfare”? I had to look that one up:

“Lawfare is the use of legal systems and institutions to damage or delegitimize an opponent, or to deter an individual’s usage of their legal rights” source

Yep, that sounds right on, brand with what Lake and Trump want for Americans.

That’s why the next six months is going to be intense. And we need to strap on our — let’s see. What do we want to strap on?” Lake asked as some in the crowd chuckled. “We’re going to strap on our, our seat belt.

Always a good idea to buckle up when operating a motor vehicle. In fact, in many states, its the law.

We’re going to put on our helmet or your Kari Lake ball cap.

Well, if you’re doing autocross, its required by SCCA rules to wear a helmet. A ball cap wouldn’t be allowed. Sorry Ms Lake.

We are going to put on the armor of God. And maybe strap on a Glock on the side of us just in case.”

I don’t remember seeing either of those in the Bible. Are you sure thats what your god would want you to do?

partial_accumen,

There as a time when you were very young that tying your shoes was impossible for you. For a time, your parents tied your shoes for you. Then you learned how, with difficulty, to do it yourself. Within a short time you mastered it and you don’t even think about it now. You simply benefit from having tied shoes without having to ask anyone. Somewhere out there is a person that doesn’t know how to tie their own shoes asking why people learned to do so for themselves, where you have that answer for yourself.

Others around you see benefits to raising children, the challenge and pay of rising in job role, or the noble contribution of doing charity work bettering others/society. For you, you don’t see any of the benefits to yourself that come from those thing. Yet those other people learned to tie their shoes themselves too. You are like them in that they had the desire to better themselves in that small way because you all saw a benefit.

It sounds like the question before you is to examine your life, decide if there is anything you want in it that you don’t have, and work a path to getting that. The one further thing I would recommend is don’t just look at your life as it is now at age 30. Imagine your life at 35,40, 50, 65, and 80. With the versions of yourself at those ages be satisfied with the person you are today with what you know and have? Will you, at some distant year, be sad that you passed on an opportunity to have something else in your life you don’t have today? If so, its up to you, today, to make the choices that will eventually make you into the person you want to be for that distant age.

Only you can answer this question and there is no wrong answer as long as you are true to yourself and have properly explored yourself and the world to properly answer this question.

partial_accumen,

Haven’t we already heard this argument and hasn’t it already been ruled against?

partial_accumen,

First, nearly all of your statements are posing the question of: “is someone an introvert or extrovert” as a binary condition. You are X or you are Y. You made one statement I saw where you allow for a spectrum, but all responses to responses appear to only recognize a binary condition.

I do believe its a spectrum, but when someone says “I’m an introvert” its shorthand for “On the spectrum of intro- or extro- version, I fall so far on the introversion side, that I would consider, and my behavior for myself, matches introversion”. That whole statement would be a mouthful.

But that’s the issue- you’re demonstrating pretty clearly that the intro-extro thing makes people feel they can make categorical judgements of a person from even a casual self-description of their behavior.

You gave two small examples of your behavior/patterns, both falling in one way. I even called this out that it was a small sample. I think you put too much weight in my categorizing you from those two. I wasn’t making a clinical diagnosis. If you want to use this as a whole point that introversion and extroversion aren’t a thing, you’re welcome to, but I think you’d be offbase.

But I think your response explains why this is such an unpopular opinion. For whatever reason a lot of people have adopted introvert\extrovert as a part of their identity

Introversion is not part my identity. Its a rational system that helps me cope with and navigate my personal limits, strengths and failings. If you have another system that fits better to help me understand myself I can apply introspectively, I’m open to it.

and here I am telling them that it’s invalid because it’s nonsense.

Okay, I’ll bite. If its nonsense, as an example tell me why I’m totally mentally exhausted after spending 60 minutes presenting to a large group of people. Why is it some people instead thrive on that same 60 minute large group presentation and come out energized and wanting more?

That’s a bit like telling someone their religion is invalid so no surprise people will push back against challenges.

Not quite. A religion is a system of explanations about the world, life, and lifestyle. I assume you wouldn’t just say “its wrong” you’d point out scientific answers to those same questions.

So far on our intro/extroversion topic, you’re just saying its non-existent, offering no other explanation for the observed behaviors and outcomes. Here’s your chance to fill in that second half. Please explain your version of the alternative.
