For the nerds: I used Faircamp (https://simonrepp.com/faircamp/) to make this site, with a tiny bit of steering and hosting help from @mart0. I am a rookie who can barely use the command line and it was not bad, I think most people could set this up in an hour or two with a thorough tutorial (which I imagine will happen at some point). Mostly its just organizing files and images in folders, and then Faircamp spits out a nice functional site for you.

Bandcamp is fine for now but punks we gotta do our own thing or we're gonna get bitten. It has happened before and its gonna happen again! :PunkFelix:

Anyone have a guide to using they like or have found helpful?
I've had a few friends sign up and mention they were a bit confused about getting started, finding people, finding/adding books, etc. Ideally something geared toward users who are familiar with the fediverse but still a bit new to it.

📖 “London's most Dangerous Junctions mapped” – This is an awesome project. I’m wondering if someone has made something similar for Montreal? https://lcc.org.uk/news/londons-dangerous-junctions-2023/

@heliomass absolutely! The improvements in bike infrastructure have been a total game changer since I started working on the road. There are still a lot of problems - I still think the narrow, 2-way paths e.g. de mais and Rachel are a huge liability, especially with the increase in ebike, escooters and cargo. But overall I am actually super impressed with it. (Also I mention my courier experience just to say that I have a high level of familiarity with most of the city core and have seen the changes over time... Not to say my experience of being a cyclist here is more valid than anyone else's!)

My take, off the top of my head, not data-based (I have been working as a bike messenger in Montreal for the past 8 years.) Would be curious to see what the data says, although so much has changed in the last ~4-5 years wrt bike lanes and priority lights, intersection design changes etc... My list would have been completely different a few years ago.

@liaizon same! Not to get into a controversial discussion, I love Montreal style bagels, they are perfect and delicious and close to my heart...but I also really really like "other kinds of bagels" and it is basically impossible to find them here. So DIY, I guess.

    Making tempeh :)

    peoplelikedogs,
    @peoplelikedogs@438punk.house avatar

    I fried up a lil slice plain and it was very tasty! Great success. I missed shelling a few of the beans and would maybe cook them a tinnnny bit longer next time, but otherwise this is by far the easiest and most instant-gratification fermentation project I've ever done. I'm marinating some slices for TLT sandwiches later and froze most of it.

    I really like doing napkin math so I did a cost breakdown and found out that per-batch, it is VERY cost effective to make it at home vs buying it (not to mention the possibility of experimenting with other beans and grains, which I'm really stoked about)

    Spores: From Mycoboutique it's $35 for 50g which is the larger economy-sized package. You need about 4g of spores for 500g of dried soybeans, so ~$2.80 per batch.

    Soybeans: At Bulk Barn prices they're $.27/100g, so that's $1.35 for 500g

    So for one batch which starts with 500g dried soybeans and yields approximatedly 750g finished tempeh, that's $4.15 in raw materials (not including 30mL of white vinegar).

    Comparitively, Noble Bean (local tempeh empire, which I learned is the largest tempeh maker in North America?? ) runs about $6 for a 240g brick these days. So that's $18 for roughly the same amount as I made at home for ~$4.15. Definitely worth it.

    @liaizon yeah! i have been wanting to do it ever since i got a copy of wild fermentation when i was 19, so like.... 15 years in the making haha. i was always really intimidated by the whole incubation chamber setup, and it helped a lot just being gifted this one, but in new orleans i'm pretty sure you could definitely just do it at room temp in the summer.

    @peoplelikedogs@438punk.house avatar

    Also shoutout Javanese ppl for inventing tempeh!!! Been trying to read up on the history while working on all this and it's definitely hard to find stuff that isn't from a total colonialist and/or gross western "healthfood" perspective, but it does seem like there's some movement both in Indonesia and more broadly to encourage tempeh consumption and home production because of it's such a low cost and tasty protein. If anyone knows of any good english or french language anticolonial tempeh history I'm def interested.

    I have a friend who wants to try doing some bike camping this summer, and is looking for nice camping spots or routes they can ride to for an overnighter or possibly 2-3 day trip from portland (the idea is to get rid of their car, so they wanna make sure they can still go do woods stuff without it). They have a decent bike with gears and good brakes and stuff but are probably mostly into roads or gravel paths and not so much into more technical/mountain bike trails or anything too wild. Let me know if you have any tips or good resources (websites, whatev), thanks!! :boostRequest:
