Best team name ever in my summer course Medieval Culture goes to this year's group doing research on medieval England:

Serf and Turf.

By all means, let's protect our natural environment, but, we DON'T need another bureaucracy.

No more national parks.

I'm not alone, I've seen a few such banners in the locality.

@fitheach well, national parks provide an income stream which the Council cannot and will not provide
If you want to say goodbye to that then fine.

peterbrown,
@peterbrown@mastodon.scot avatar

@fitheach there’s a lot more practical local control in the national park than there is the average Council. Otherwise there would be no point in having them.

What is critical is to get in right at the beginning and ensure that the national park board has a majority of local members .

peterbrown,
@peterbrown@mastodon.scot avatar

@fitheach well I experienced one of the Italian national parks as a visitor, and I was so impressed with the way it was operated that I made the effort to read their constitution and rules.

The enabling legislation is just that – enabling. The actual set up of the national park is up for grabs, and it is up to local people to grab it.

@thisismyglasgow the total absence of white plastic windows makes a huge difference to the aesthetic of the building 👍🏼

The Scottish Event Campus on the banks of the Clyde in Glasgow, with a rather large reminder that the area used to be one of the city's largest docks before the SEC was built.

@thisismyglasgow I am sure they thought it was very clever to mutate from the SECC (Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre) to the SEC and call themselves the Scottish Event Campus but for those of us not in regular contact with these organisations it is merely confusing.
There was absolutely nothing wrong with the old name.

@jdmccafferty my understanding was that Mary had escaped to seek the “protection” of Elizabeth of her own free will?

vandalism and graffiti can bring down house prices across a whole neighbourhood. please consider doing your part in tackling the housing crisis. together we can fix it

peterbrown,
@peterbrown@mastodon.scot avatar

@josh the reason it affects house prices is because people don’t want to live with vandalism and graffiti. Smashing windows and running street battles would lower house prices as well, but they are not seen as good neighbourly activities.
We should be fighting to solve the problem at root, not shitting on our own doorsteps

eBike thefts up 250% in 2 years in the UK, finds FoI request
https://cyclingindustry.news/ebike-thefts-up-250-in-2-years-in-the-uk-finds-foi-request/
In what might be a sign of the cash strapped times or attributable to the volume of electric bikes now in the UK (or both), eBike thefts have doubled in the UK in the space of a year.

Evolve e-bikes submitted a Freedom of Information request to every police force in the UK and found that there were 103% more eBike thefts in 2023 compared to 2022 – and an incredible 257% more than in 2021.

Who comes up with these disgusting ideas?

I hate bananas in any form.

@fitheach we make raspberry jam from extra raspberries so I suppose the Filipinos make banana ketchup from excess bananas.

“Remarkably, food production doubled under the agrivoltaic system. And because water evaporation from the plants cooled the panels, the solar system itself generated 3% more electricity during the summer, showing how both food and solar production can perform better when done in collaboration”.

Solicitor general to appeal over case of climate activist who held sign on jurors’ rights

https://www.theguardian.com/law/article/2024/may/15/trudi-warner-climate-activist-solicitor-general-appeal

The Conservatives are prepared to go to any length, to stifle dissent and overturn long established principles in English law.

The judge accused the government’s solicitor general of “significantly mischaracterising” the evidence, when his lawyers alleged Warner behaved in an intimidating manner, confronting potential jurors outside the court.

I'll start

Rootes Linwood
IBM Greenock
Singer Kilbowie
Stelrad Dalbeattie
Sun Linlithgow
NCR Dundee
Timex Dundee

I must have missed hundreds. Add your picks

@GlasWolf @simon_brooke same with singer.

Clydebank was Singer’s flagship factory for the whole of Europe, just as IBM was in Greenock. Are these failures?

MPs warn that Brits could be blocked from entering Gibraltar because of Brexit deal
https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/brexit-gibraltar-european-union-border-b2542485.html
A Commons committee has warned that a post-Brexit deal for Gibraltar could have “serious” consequences.

Only 823 people in Gibraltar voted Leave... as a posed to the 19,322 who voted to Remain in the EU.

peterbrown,
@peterbrown@mastodon.scot avatar

@kim_harding it was obvious from the start that in order for Gibraltar to retain its free movement with Spain anybody arriving from the UK would have to enter the Shengen area to get access to Gibraltar. Were it not for the Good Friday agreement the same would apply to Ireland

"Have some courtesy," someone said in a movie last night.

I was struck by it. Maybe that's why I'm so rough around the edges.

I was never taught courtesy, I recieved no courtesy. I was never taught love as I received no love.

I was only taught cruelty, and because of that, will fight for the opressed, and break that cycle.

Not sure how you can teach yourself courtesy in a world this oppressive and nasty.
