phdepressed,

Couple hundred or thousands of shitty cases have got through already but I guess better late than never.

Weight Lifting: How are you supposed to know the weights of unlabled things?

I started lifting weights (again) and accurately tracking my progress (I bought a “cheap” workout and weight loss plan, which requires a lot of data so you can see your progress (or regress)). When bench pressing and doing squats on the (Cybex) Smith Machine I had assumed that the bar weighed 45 pounds like a free bar does...

phdepressed,

This site has a chart of bar weights for cybex. fitnessvolt.com/smith-machine-bar-weight/-muc…

Per a pinned extra weight besides finding your machine info the easy assumption is that they are increments between the most common weights. So on your machine 7.5lb for a single pin weight would be a safe assumption.

Idk what conferences you’re going to man I’ve enjoyed mine once I get through that preliminary don’t know anyone struggle. Having speakers in person allows actual conversation beyond the q+a. Also students and “trainees” get actually discounted rates. Besides which your PIs funding should be reimbursing you which is means you get cc points for free.

phdepressed,

You’re also not going to find many people talking about friends or family in that way before they die. Whether it is because a person takes their relationships for granted. Keep their private feelings, private. Or shows their love and appreciation in less public ways. There are many reasons you won’t often see what you’re saying is required to actually care for a person. Because it’s not a common way of showing care. Looking for and appreciating the (small) actions people do for those they care about is a much better way to see things. Viewing life and death through such a depressing cynical lens is pitiable. I hope you can one day find a less depressing and shitty view of things.

I say that with full understanding that there are people like you say getting some perverse glee about someone’s death to boost their socials off of but that is a tiny minority are closer to your view of society than the actual general person.

phdepressed,

Just happens to be that the US lost citizen’s united.

Even for a “one-off” they probably make spare parts if not full on extra cameras. Even Hubble and James Webb have extras that have been kept here on earth.

NSA shares zero-trust guidance to limit adversaries on the network (www.bleepingcomputer.com)

The NSA has issued guidance on adopting zero-trust principles to counter internal network threats. Zero-trust architecture prevents unauthorized access and movement within networks by assuming threats exist and enforcing strict access controls. The approach includes data flow mapping, segmentation, and software-defined...

phdepressed,

Yes, siloing info is less efficient. However, it is significantly more secure. NSA unlikely to purposefully backdoor themselves.

UK Trial: Pornhub's Chatbot Halts Millions from Accessing Child Abuse Content (www.wired.com)

A trial program conducted by Pornhub in collaboration with UK-based child protection organizations aimed to deter users from searching for child abuse material (CSAM) on its website. Whenever CSAM-related terms were searched, a warning message and a chatbot appeared, directing users to support services. The trial reported a...

There’s already real video of Trump and Giuliani kissing and more than a few elected GOPs have drag photos. It’s very much a rules for thee not for me type of thing.

phdepressed,

That type of direct agreement is not necessary to prove collusion (makes it easier to prosecute certainly) but intent doesn’t matter legally. Using a software that has an inbuilt collusion algorithm is still collusion. This is also on a larger scale than mom+pop these algorithms and software were/are used by much larger companies that own magnitudes more units.

phdepressed,

Pandemic and non-pandemic is not a good comparison, specifically for those mentioned restrictions… they note it’s the fastest growing group but link that statement to another article about Mexican migration, which had no Chinese info I saw.

What It’s Like to Staff the Home of a Billionaire (www.thecut.com)

Say you’re on a yacht with your principal and they had a few tequilas, and then they’re like, “Oh, come on. Join us.” Ultimately, you have to remember that you are there because they’re paying you. It’s a job. They’re not your friend. Obviously, you need to share compassion and empathy. Sometimes your boss needs...

The top 0.1% in the US have ~20Trillion in wealth. That’s enough for all ~340million Americans to get 58,000. Globally across all ~10Billion people thats enough for everyone to get 2,000. That’s a one time thing, making it an investment isn’t accurate to what it represents in terms of value generated that was not given to the workers.

At the US level 58k would get most people out of student loan debt (29k average)and free from credit card debt(6k average).

At a global level 2,000 would allow the world’s poor to be able to eat a healthy diet(3.54) every day for over 1.5 years or a subsistence diet (0.83) for 6.6 years

phdepressed,

What I’m saying about this amount of wealth is that it is because people were not paid the value of their work. They gained 20T over the years because that is what they make from underpaying and overcharging. That unregulated capitalism is the basis that leads to such obscene wealth. Redistribution is not about investment but changing the underlying system. It’s basically 58k of backpay. People would largely use it to get out of debt and improve their lives in some way.

From then on with the system changed people are getting an extra 5,800/y. Enough for significantly more families to avoid food insecurity and get/stay out of debt. Those two things are the biggest helps you can give people to reduce crime, and improve communities. It doesn’t have to be much as multiple UBI studies have shown.

phdepressed,

It’s like the proven best way to get stuff stuck in your head. Repetition is super helpful for memory. As an adult usually your repetition is kept to work time but it isn’t a different concept.

phdepressed,

Cramming and studying are different. Sure many people use cramming in place of studying for tests and whatnot. But proper studying involves working on understanding via exercise and usage. And doing so more often than in just a pre-test cramming session.

Half of Gaza was under 18 before this genocide. I doubt it gets better after. War will age them beyond their years. It is the fault of Israel and every government that has power to but does not stop them.

Lauren Boebert's son was arrested over a spate of thefts as his mom tries to convince voters to look past her chaotic family life (www.businessinsider.com)

Older genX also hasn’t done well either. The personal finance sub was full of people concerned about older parents and relatives not having savings or living ability when shit hits the fan and questioning how to manage their own families + the elders.

phdepressed,

Context pls. Who is Richard Jeni and why do you know his wife’s baking?

Dutch far-right leader Wilders against signing security agreement with Ukraine (kyivindependent.com)

Dutch far-right leader Geert Wilders said on Feb. 24 that he is against the Netherlands signing a 10-year agreement on security cooperation with Ukraine, the day after Dutch Defense Minister Kajsa Ollongren said the Netherlands will sign the agreement.

Biden planning to hit food ‘shrinkflation,’ corporate greed in SOTU (www.politico.com)

President Joe Biden is weighing how hard to hammer big food companies over painfully high grocery prices in his upcoming State of the Union Address. But some some aides remain wary of focusing too much on food inflation, given how little power the president has to singlehandedly force down prices....

phdepressed,

This type of fake inflation is driven by those in the 1-0.1%. No stopping it doesn’t treat the underlying problem but treating symptoms is still better than nothing.

phdepressed,

That’s a disingenuous statement. Gregor Mendel was a monk(and became an abbot). Darwin very nearly became a priest and waited years to publish the origin of species until Alfred Wallace independently came to the same conclusion partly because Darwin was conflicted about how it went against Christian dogma at the time. Even now there are plenty of scientists with religious faith and belief. There’s no scientific guidance on souls.

phdepressed,

NAS is far from every scientist. There’s a graduate+faculty faith organization at most if not all R1 institutes.

As you state a soul is a philosophical concept which is why faith is so involved in trying to dictate what “life” is.

If you want to beat them we need to be arguing at the correct level for understanding. The church not caring til Roe and abortion of some sort being done for hundreds or thousands of years is not the argument that matters to fundies. It is when life is determined to have a soul in their belief. If scientific facts argue against philosophical belief, neither side will ever understand the other.

phdepressed,

Major shareholders only. People just trying to retire aren’t the problem.
