phdepressed,
  1. You can in fact test many of these devices in mice and even zebrafish.
  2. You repeat testing in animals (with modifications) til it is actually safe or you at least understand what the risk is and how to mitigate it to tell the people who are going to trial it.
phdepressed,

Yes, but lower order animals. There are creatures with more or less intelligence and therefore more or less capacity of suffering.

Euthanasia is fine for an end point but as an implanted device is lifelong such a short time with the implant before sacrifice is not as useful as longer timepoints.

phdepressed,

The danger to trans kids can’t be understated more in your comment. Outing a kid to parents against their transition is a good way to get them shunned and bullied to homelessness and/or death. Unsupported and bullied kids have astronomically higher rate of suicide, homelessness, and just plain chances of being murdered like that Oklahoma trans teenager recently.

Teachers can support a kid in coming out to their parents or out the kid to their parents based on their judgement rather than being required to do so. Your child has a right to privacy as well, depending on age and whether the secret harms others. Being trans at the point where they want to change their name is usually a high-school thing and being trans isn’t harming anyone.

phdepressed,

Modern farmers tend to be fairly well educated. How much exposure they have to a non GOP narrative on the other hand…

They’d have to actively search out dem and left views. Their church is probably GOP, their neighbors are probably GOP, their radio is definitely GOP, their local news networks are GOP.

The GOP has a stranglehold on rural areas for a reason and it isn’t by making things better for their constituents. It is by near perfect control over the information they get most conveniently. People don’t tend to search out the opposing view and if they do they’re already biased towards the one they heard first.

phdepressed,

Federal income tax currently maxes at 37%

phdepressed,

EU and maybe gdpr and other similar regulation matter. The US hasn’t updated our regulations on the tech sector, we’re like 30y behind.

phdepressed,

That’s part of why we need viable rail travel in the US.

phdepressed,

I want to laugh but it hurts.

phdepressed,

That is an atrocious video. 5.7hp from a light draft horse is what they got. Based on setup I’m not sure their measurement is appropriately applicable to a “max” horsepower of a horse but it does seem that the horsepower of a horse could be lower than thought. The use of a light draft horse instead of a heavy draft horse is also questionable.

phdepressed,

None of the rich ones want to pony up that much for nothing and the poor ones have already spent what they had on his other legal costs and “merch”.

phdepressed,

Skorjden’s disease is an autoimmune disease that attacks salivary glands. It is a large part of why Venus Williams had to retire. I don’t believe there’s any noticeable caloric difference though research would mostly be on the other effects of disease.

US Supreme Court lets Texas border enforcement law take effect (www.reuters.com)

The U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday let a Republican-backed Texas law take effect allowing state law enforcement authorities to arrest people suspected of crossing the U.S.-Mexico border illegally, rejecting a request by President Joe Biden’s administration....

phdepressed,

Well in the above scenario NY and CA still aren’t shipping them to other states using lies and without telling the receiving state.

Using AI to spot edible mushrooms could kill you | AI tools are good for some things, but don’t trust your health to apps that make frequent mistakes (wapo.st)

In particular, know how to identify the common and deadly species (eg: much of the genus Amanita) yourself, and get multiple trustworthy field guides for your part of the world.

phdepressed,

Now that is a thought. Instead of AI doing a skynet/terminator thing it gets to the point we trust it and then tells us to eat or do things that kill us.

Biden signs executive order on advancing study of women's health while chiding 'backward' GOP ideas (apnews.com)

President Joe Biden signed an executive order Monday aimed at advancing the study of women’s health by strengthening data collection and providing better funding opportunities for biomedical research while chiding Republicans for having “no clue about the power of women” but saying they’re “about to find out” come...

phdepressed,

No need for nitty gritty, ignoring laws and courts is what dictators do. The hhs secretary is the one to determine a national health emergency and by law can only do so for a disease or disorder. Pregnancy is neither.

Acting like he hasn’t done anything besides not be Trump is disingenuous at best especially considering the congresses he’s had to work with.

phdepressed,

Hope not, if it goes down low enough maybe someone reasonable can buy it out.

lan, to FiberArts

Do any of you recognize this stitch? I found it in a pdf where it is called "pulled two-sided Italian cross stitch", but I can only find references to the regular Italian cross stitch. https://rsnstitchbank.org/stitch/two-sided-italian-cross-stitch
Would any of you happen to know its proper (Italian?) name? I cannot seem to quite figure it out based on the picture alone. Much obliged!

@lemmy_stitch @fiberarts

phdepressed,

It seems like the regular Italian two sided cross stitch. Just that each knot is pulled tighter before going to the next.

Gender Equality Unlocked (lemmy.world)

The son of the late liberal Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg said Sunday that giving an award bearing his mother’s name to SpaceX CEO Elon Musk […] is a “desecration of my mother’s memory.” […] The award “has previously recognized women of distinction” but was expanded this year to include men and women.

phdepressed,

Whoever determines awardees must be a MAGAt. Everyone on that list besides Martha Stewart is a hard-right fucko who is against everything RBG advocated for through her life.

phdepressed,

The drunk samurai guy and lady butterfly have been my filters, also the shinobi dude in the “hidden” are of the memory. Chained ogre, dude on a horse, other samurai, monks, etc I’m fine with. I just can’t dodge well in the memory I guess.

phdepressed,

Yeah

phdepressed,

I mean clean/heat container add coffee and water, let soak(brew?) ~3min then press and pour? Is that fancy? I have found that different coffees would need different times at which the brew would become too bitter or too weak but that is largely coffee dependent since my water is the same temp for all. I like trying different coffees so rarely have the desire to figure out the specifics to French press each one.

Nathan Wade resigns after judge says Fani Willis and her office can stay on Trump Georgia 2020 election case if he steps aside (www.cbsnews.com)

Nathan Wade, a special prosecutor working with the Fulton County District Attorney’s Office, resigned his post after a judge ruled Friday that District Attorney Fani Willis and her office may remain on the 2020 election case involving former President Donald Trump and his allies if Wade stepped aside....

phdepressed,

As with pretty much all weapons it depends if you know how to use it, and the armor available to your foes.

phdepressed,

There’ll always be someone new to the field who does actually have to read the intro. I read a stuff outside of my field all the time and I rely on the intro to not have to go find a review just to broadly understand a given paper.

phdepressed,

When a paper is far enough outside of my field I’m not going to be knowledgeable enough to critique methods. I’m not “new to the field” in the sense that I’m starting research in that area. Just thought the title was interesting/cool and I want to know a little bit more about the specifics. I don’t actually care about the field enough to study it (if I did I’d look for a review). So I’m not trying to understand the field but the just the paper(broadly). Why is the thing they study important? How did they (supposedly) come to their hypothesis? Just how badly is a news report overreaching what the source states? Etc.
