@lain @kaia If only that was true for most medium to large sized companies. The reality is that upper management constantly creates meaningless rules and procedures, so they can justify their position in the company. And everyone under them suffers because of that. The "just let me work" company mindset isn't there.

@SuperDicq @hj @disarray If you use base Misskey with Docker and no custom patches, than yes, it's really easy. Almost the same could be said about the Pleroma OTP, you download it and run it, that's almost all of it.

@hj @disarray @SuperDicq I do too, because I have some custom patches for both FE and BE. Most are just annoyances that I had and almost nobody will have (FE muting posts through wordfilter on handles for example). I use the source installs as a safeguard if I want to add something in the future.

That most of the communication is public/unlisted doesn't mean that users don't use the other 2 options. The poast leak is a great example of that. Of course you can't stop everything when the administrator is just dumb like with the chudbuds leak. Yes, it's a non issue for most instances, because they are small and that's why there should be some encouragement to host your own instance if possible in my opinion.

Slighly off-topic:
Pleroma is by far the best in this regard. Compiling Misskey is hell and Mastodon isn't easy to run as a small instance. There's one problem with Pleroma's installation and that's RHEL/Fedora based distros, not much you can do there, because SELinux kinda sucks to write policies for and elixir, ffmpeg aren't even in the main repos for RHEL. I can rewrite the old CentOS installation guide if hj and others want, but there's not much I can help with SELinux, my setup works and that's it.

I'm planning to get tested for ADHD and get medications.
If I do I'll finally be able to learn stuff on my own for a change and if that works I will start working on raccoon.quest to offer more.
This doesn't mean @dushman will be dismissed, dush is a good friend I am attached to and this is our project, not mine, not his, ours, and we will work on it together as long as he wants it to.
But if I lear n stuff it's less weight on his back and potentially more cool stuff for everyone.

When I need to buy something, I can't find something that I would want to wear. Everything just looks ugly and repulsing to me, I don't want nonsense text/images on my shirts, the only shoes I can wear without feeling like a dumbass are hiking shoes and few Vans models.

@feld @sampo XMPP clients are trash on all platforms. The only usable XMPP clients are proprietary clients for closed ecosystems like iMessage and WhatsApp.

@hyolo @feld @sampo The base protocol doesn't do much, so you need a bunch of extensions (XEPs) to have a usable experience, and some clients implement only some of them, so your experience is a mixed bag depending on your clients of choice.

For example calling is "supported" by Gajim and Conversations, but Gajim doesn't implement one of the extensions for calling, so you can't have a call between these two clients. In fact calling from Conversations to Gajim sometimes causes a memleak in Gajim.

There are also some more technical reasons why XMPP is kind of hard to deal with. I think it requires a live stateful XML parser over the length of the conversation.

I legit cannot sleep because it's driving me insane

I've been looking at some software at work and the boss suddenly drops a links with the cves (vulnerabilities) it had and.... there was nothing abnormal. A few a year, most of them didn't even affect the edition we will go going for and they were taken care of pretty much before they even appeared on said cve site

I'm feeling like there's a massive misunderstanding about vulnerabilities, how this all works and that the sole presence of them means that it's "bad"

Is this normal for a programmer to not be aware of this?

  • But that CVE isn't exploitable, we don't have that code compiled in. It doesn't exist in the binary.
  • Does not matter. The scanner still reports it, update it just to be sure.

@SuperDicq @mischievoustomato Rust is for people that can't write C without it breaking all the time and like unnecessarily complicated language syntax. I can count the number of useful Rust programs on my one hand. GNU coreutils is a mess as is GCC and binutils, but it's a mess that works. Until Rust fixes it's many problems (no ABI, only statically linkable, slow compile times, usable without cargo) it will be a meme language.

can fedi recommend a good stereo headset? I'm looking at Jabra Evolve2 65, but testing it its microphone is meh-ish.

@kaia Or another option is "gaming" headsets. A friend of mine has HyperX cloud and the microphone isn't bad, I would say above average. The headphones also sound pretty good, slightly more bass, which is fine for most. They sell for a lower price than the more company oriented headsets and overall give you more for the same price. A possible disadvantage is that they are USB wired only I think.

@kaia If you plan to use it only for online meetings, these would do fine. However don't expect a sound from them. I've had a Jabra headset (a lower end one, the price was 60 EUR) during covid and they had nothing but mids. Good enough for speech and that's it. The microphone is the typical slightly scratchy one. Better than laptop built-in ones and worse than a dedicated one. If you already have headphones, it might be cheaper to buy a separate USB mic than these headsets. In my opinion they are usually overpriced for what you get, because they are mainly targeted at companies buying them in bulk.

@sun @mia Linux will never be used for critical realtime usecases. It's too big and slow for that. It is used in embedded applications for viewing the state of a machine, but it never runs it. ECUs use big custom microcontrollers and sometimes FPGAs, but the infotainment system sometimes runs Linux (usually Qt or EFL for GUI). Czech modernized locomotives use old Debian (kernel version 2.6) for the driver controls, but the real computer only gets commands from that. When you are dealing with thousands of sensors that can completely change the state in which the controller has to go and hundreds of HW level interrupts, Linux is to complex for that. You need something simple that is very close to the hardware.

@sun @mia The realtime patches that I know of are still used for desktop uses as far as I know. Ubuntu Studio for example has a "realtime" kernel to minimize latency between recording and playback hardware. Or I can be completely out of the loop and some madman made a realtime Linux for something embedded. I can see the usecase for IoT, but that's it.

FOSStard or GNUTard, not to be confused with a FOSSoid, is an insufferable person whose most prominent identity is Free Software advocacy ( advocacy) done the wrong way. These people can be identified online by the GNUJihad flag, or by the language they use when writing their long posts about how Free Software is better than proprietary software in every way. Usually by writing "Total proprietary death" or it's acronym "TPD" somewhere in the post.

Instead of advocating for practical Free Software use, they support only 100% Free Software solutions while ignoring how broken and unusable they can be. Thus eliminating any potential new users of Free Software they could have convinced otherwise.

Differences between a FOSSTard and FOSSoid

FOSSoids are usually harmless and support Free Software only in places where it makes sense and try to develop solutions in places where Free Software doesn't work. They are non-argumentative and don't engage in long threads about Free Software. And if they do, they laugh at the stupidity of it.

Differences between a FOSSTard and FLOSSTard

FLOSSTards are a less harmful version of FOSSTards, who felt the urge to add the L in , thus creating (Free and Libre Open-Source Software) and support the now popular dance from the game Fortnite. While also ignoring that free and libre means the same thing.
