Uninstalling Microsoft SwiftKey (now SwiftKey AI) from my Android phone. I've used it for years as it's what came with the phone and wasn't Google. I have despised seeing it constantly blocked in my security software, knowing I have the telemetry switched off, knowing it's still spying on me.

The switch to Thumb-key was painful for the first day, merely infuriating for the next few days, slow until the end of the first week, now two weeks in I'm almost semi-proficient. And not being spied on.

i absolutely despise software and services that just go nuts without a working Internet connection.

Directly connected my laptop to an RPi via Ethernet cable. NetworkManager doesn't add an IPv6 LL address by default because "no router bad", and even worse, keeps dumping the LL address every time its connectivity check fails, which...breaks connectivity.

Had a dream last night that @revk was showing me around @aaisp towers. Started in his office while he was struggling with a spreadsheet that wasn't printing correctly. Offered him some pointers then he was off to an important meeting so I went to hang about with the tech support crew.

My dreams are usually more interesting and abstract than this.

OK I’m going to float an idea on here. It looks like we won’t be able to cancel a “broadband switch” from losing side. So won’t be able to do “anti slamming”. Shame.

But to switch using OTS you have to have a match on surname (using some fun, and vague, rules for accented characters).

So we could allow customers to set any surname on a line, and use as a sort of “password”.

After all, you can call yourself what you like, and we have to accept changes to personal information.

proactiveservices,
@proactiveservices@fosstodon.org avatar

@revk If this is added as a feature I will immediately be using it. I have to protect myself from unscrupulous organisations and ISPs fall into that description frequently. Whatever I can do to place my own padlock on my service, I will do.

halla, to random

I love lentils, and I love chickpeas, so when today's lunch place offered lentil soup with chickpeas, I didn't hesitate.

It turned out to be a watery concoction made from stock cubes and maggi liquid, with a handfull of lentils and chickpeas added, and a dollop of over-age yoghurt.

It wasn't worth the effort of spooning it up, so no lunch for me today. It wasn't even worth complaining about, because I wouldn't have been able to say anything that wouldn't be sarcastic.

proactiveservices,
@proactiveservices@fosstodon.org avatar

@halla if it's any consolation I managed to carbonise some food so badly the other day, that it was reduced to a homogenised slurry of fundamental elements. Let's just eat out today.

Has anybody else found that the notifications have stopped working on the Android Mastodon app? Unsure if this is somehow related to the Bing API saga too, or if I've broken something in my settings, but I'm instead receiving notification emails because my instance doesn't think I'm active in the app, and the app just isn't doing push notifications at all. Getting a tad irritating now!

proactiveservices,
@proactiveservices@fosstodon.org avatar

@dev_ric I don't use it, but this week I've seen a few other people mention this problem for both the official and, I think, iOS apps.

Which is more secure - Bitlocker (in Windows obviously!) or an encrypted HDD/SDD in Linux?

proactiveservices,
@proactiveservices@fosstodon.org avatar

@Gordonbp Well Microsoft will store your Bitlocker keys without informed consent, on an insecure platform, so that's a solid data point.

I recently reread the novel 1984, written in 1948 by George Orwell. It's famous.

It's interesting to see how much its own time informed it.

In the 1984 London, rocket bombs crash into the city regularly and are shrugged off almost casually. Bizarre!

But 3 years before the novel was written, V2 rockets still crashed into London.

proactiveservices,
@proactiveservices@fosstodon.org avatar

@faassen My late father was a young man during WWII and when he had time off from working or serving, he would sometimes lay in a park and would see the V1s fly over London. The way he told that story made it feel very casual.
