Really enjoying the pictures everyone is posting of the aurora. Even if it's too cloudy to see it here.

I do find myself wondering...

Who's read (or listened to the audio book) "Day of the triffids"?

I'm now the proud owner of a set of gauge blocks. These are one of the most precise things I own (microchips and camera lenses hold that title). Each is ground to ±300nM. The surface is so smooth they they can be wrung together and become incredibly hard to pull apart. These will become the origin for all precision in my machining.

Do I need anything this precise? Nope.
Am I very happy with my shiny new toy? Hellyes.

In hindsight walking into the hospital wearing a t-shirt that says "I'm only here because you broke something" is perhaps not the best choice...

Reminder, if you die your employer will be advertising your job before your funeral has even happened. Don't give them more than they are paying for.

Bicycles are incredibly efficient. But velomobiles take it to another level. The rider of this velo just did 400km in 16 hours and 15 minutes. Am impressive feat.

Watching @notjustbikes latest video about the new 30kph limit in Amsterdam reminded me of a realisation I had the other day while waiting for the bus to work.

The bus timetable hasn't changed. The speed limit for most of the route went from 50kph to 30kph. Yet despite only doing 60% of the speed. The timetable for the bus hasn't been changed.

Dunno if that just means the bus punctuality has suffered.

Makes you wonder how much the new speed limit is actually effecting car journey times...

"Failed: unknown reason"

That is exceptionally poor programming. You know I exactly what caused the error. It's just bad practice to not convey that properly in your errors.

Anyone know if the usb data blockers like the portapow things will prevent a device from fast charging?

There really aren't enough night trains, not just the number of different routes, but the actual number of trains on those routes. Now need to work out what to do instead for my Holiday plans :(

FFs, the youtube app has changed behaviour with how it works with chromecast. Now tapping a video doesn't pop up a "Play now/Add to queue" box, it just immediately kicks out the current video, and starts playing the one you tapped. Even if you weren't actually intending to watch it...

DO NOT WANT.

I can't help but thinking this is more a case of fix your own shit. Rather than bitching about mastodon.

Pretty much any website beyond some self hosted personal blog should have no issues with the number of requests being talked about here...

Maybe if someone like @cstross was to be posting the link. That might be legit breaking. But for most mortals. It shouldn't be.

Fix your shit.

Am i being dumb, or is there no direct train from Claremont ferrand to Beziers in June? Have had this route recommended by multiple people as very pretty. But can't seem to get any journey planner to give me a time for it.

Please forgive me that my has been so sparse of late. Much has got in the way of enjoying nature. Today I managed to escape to the woods for an afternoon to spend some time with the blue bells. Hadn't realised how much I enjoy a woodland carpeted with bluebells, and the occasional wild garlic. I returned to home feeling refreshed, and happy.

May these blue bells bring a smile to your too.

Beautiful nerds of the fediverse. I'm looking for a USB temperature sensor that has an accuracy of better than 1°, and easy support in Linux. Needs to be available in the EU.

Any suggestions?

We're gonna start to see this a whole lot more in the coming years. Right to repair is great, but when software support ends, we're kinda screwed.

Avoid buying smart TVs. Consider something like a Chromecast attached to the hdmi port, at least then it's a lot less e waste when the Chromecast goes obsolete, and needs replacing.

Would also help if the likes of the EU required realistic support life's for the software on devices like TVs.
