Any good cli/terminal spell checking programmes? Pass in a file, get an terminal interactive “replace this with that / ignore / add to dict.” workflow.

I remember using aspell(1) back in Ye Olden Days. Is that still the best?

Turns out the 75 emails I got over the weekend that I ignored cos I thought they were phishing. Aren't.

We really shouldn't be surprised how many people fall for phishing scams given how bad the big companies are with sending unexpected emails and expecting us to just click the link.

Bicycles are incredibly efficient. But velomobiles take it to another level. The rider of this velo just did 400km in 16 hours and 15 minutes. Am impressive feat.

quixoticgeek,
@quixoticgeek@v.st avatar

@dalias @markwaypoint the problem with e velos is that velo riders get enough hassle from police who think they are running illegal electric motors to be going as fast as they are. If you have a motor fitted. Even if it definitely cuts out at 25kph. The burden of proof to show it wasn't working when you passed the cops at 50kph is hard.

quixoticgeek,
@quixoticgeek@v.st avatar

@dalias @markwaypoint doing 25kph in a velo is so easy, it's not worth the hassle of the ebike gubbins.

quixoticgeek,
@quixoticgeek@v.st avatar

@dalias @markwaypoint fair. I'd love a velomobile. I just don't have anywhere to store it. Which is a societal problem. I can park a car outside my apartment. But not a velomobile that's one 10th the size.

@fasnix from Amsterdam (near Sloterdijk station) to Apeldoorn, down to Amerika, across towards Eindhoven, up past Utrecht, through Uithoorn, and into Amsterdam. Riden as a single ride with no sleep stops. This was an event organised by Randonneurs Nederland. Riders had 27 hours to complete the 418km route.

Details here. https://www.randonneurs.nl/brevet/brm-400-amsterdam-2024/

Scroll down for English.

I'm organising a 600 from the same location in June...

quixoticgeek,
@quixoticgeek@v.st avatar

@kim not sure about how to charge the Makita battery from the Mac. But I have worked out how to charge it from USB-C. I just need to find where I put my USB-C pd board. And work out how to set it to do 12v out. Then I can use the car charger to charge the battery from USB-C...

So I just had a transphobe try to piggy-back off a recent popular post I made, presumably to gain reach. i have a decent following here on fedi, but am a micro instance. They too were a micro instance. By default, people on micro instances are not easily discoverable other than by interaction, so if you have a following on one, it’s generally because you’ve built it “organically”, as it were.

They presumably thought that by posting transphobic rage bait in response to me, they could get me to reply, and my reply would federate to my followers, and then they’’d be seen.

Instead I just instantly defederated their server with no response.

They are howling into the void, and nobody is there to hear.

This is not Twitter. Just because someone replies to your thread doesn’t mean the rest of the word will see it. This is the achillies heal of bigots here. Most big instances will moderate them into oblivion, so they start micro instances, but unless people actually like what you’re saying, and interact, you simply won’t federate.

And they won’t even know I made this post now. LMAO! LOL!

Watching @notjustbikes latest video about the new 30kph limit in Amsterdam reminded me of a realisation I had the other day while waiting for the bus to work.

The bus timetable hasn't changed. The speed limit for most of the route went from 50kph to 30kph. Yet despite only doing 60% of the speed. The timetable for the bus hasn't been changed.

Dunno if that just means the bus punctuality has suffered.

Makes you wonder how much the new speed limit is actually effecting car journey times...

"Failed: unknown reason"

That is exceptionally poor programming. You know I exactly what caused the error. It's just bad practice to not convey that properly in your errors.

quixoticgeek,
@quixoticgeek@v.st avatar

@johnaldis or printing "error, thing returned null". The programmer tested for null, therefore they know what is and isn't expected.

quixoticgeek,
@quixoticgeek@v.st avatar

@argv_minus_one I've never had an issue with it writing in C for 25 years. Likewise Java for slightly less time.

You do something. Check for the error condition, and if you have one you can exit with an error message saying as such. Just "an error occured" is lazy programming.

quixoticgeek,
@quixoticgeek@v.st avatar

@argv_minus_one "error trying to do $thing."

Still more useful than just "unknown error"
