Replacing your wallet with a ? Sure! That's the thing that gets updates for 2 years tops, occasionally comes preloaded with and reports everything you do back to for better ad targetting, right? Let's just trust that with your gov id, passport, banking and whatever else your social life depends upon. What could possibly go wrong?

“Microsoft comes under blistering criticism for “grossly irresponsible” security | Ars Technica”

No, really. Microsoft is really, truly bad at security and has been for decades. Azure is no exception. https://arstechnica.com/security/2023/08/microsoft-cloud-security-blasted-for-its-culture-of-toxic-obfuscation/

I’m not a big fan of the rhetorical framing of “seizing the means of production” or redistributing wealth from capitalists, both because that’s not how these systems actually function and because it provides capitalists with an ideological boogeyman. “They’re going to steal your PlayStation!”

No. We don’t have to seize a single thing. Nothing has to be stolen or taken. If you stopped paying your landlord rent, if the cops stopped enforcing the landlord’s claim, the landlord will have lost nothing but a rentier claim to your labor. You don’t “seize” your own home; your landlord has not lost something they weren’t even using in the first place.

raccoon,

@HeavenlyPossum

The lord (initially) had an actual job: use that sword to protect his serfs from those who would steal their entire harvest (that's literally the etymology of the word).

He is also the nucleus around which administration evolved (for which the stolen labour paid).

I would recommend "the history of the english language" podcast. Not really as an argument, but it's fascinating to hear what the words, we use today, originally meant and how they came into being. Around episode 20 or so, the focus turns to old english and the basis for mediaeval society in England.

raccoon, to infosec

Perhaps some #infosec people can help me make sense of this?

I got a #linux webserver, offering an application for download. For some time now, my logs are flooded with requests (from different IPs) for the #windows binary v4.25.0 - this is the next release version, so the file does not exist, yet (never did; never was linked anywhere).

It's not massive enough for a #DDOS but excessive for an update probe. Putting a dummy file there has no effect.

Any ideas what this could be about?

raccoon,

@slink

Hm, interesting idea. Though the application is not that big/well known to seem like a worthwhile target.

raccoon, to InitialD

I need a new #webcam. Can anyone recommend one for team meetings? Must have decent #video and #audio quality, preferably a ring LED and most importantly, it must work under #Linux out of the box.

Oh yes, #Microsoft and #Logitech are on my shitlist.

Sind die etwa gekauft? Was braucht es denn für einen Anfangsverdacht? Ein Geständnis? 🤔

Well, sadly it is time to say goodbye to . I understand why they dropped support for anonymous from the service, but frankly, was their one unique selling point. Requiring a or account now only adds insult to injury.

So, what are the alternatives? Is viable?

"The Electric Monk was a labor-saving device, like a dishwasher or a video recorder. Dishwashers washed tedious dishes for you, thus saving you the bother of washing them yourself, video recorders watched tedious television for you, thus saving you the bother of looking at it yourself; Electric Monks believed things for you, thus saving you what was becoming an increasingly onerous task, that of believing all the things the world expected you to believe."

A friend just told me, that a lot of #artists are now fleeing #twitter over some #ai #art decision. Unfortunatly, they are turning for #Bluesky 🤦‍♂️ . Of course, we all know that this is stupid and why. So the more interesting question is: what should #Mastodon be doing differently to become a more compelling platform for content creators?

Lets face it, creators bring in people, people bring in more people, so loosing creatives to Jack Dorsey again is not really on option in the long run.

Fascinating #lifehack to create spare parts without using a 3d printer: push the broken part into modelling clay and fill the mold with a mixture of (liquid) superglue and baking soda (graphite works even better). The filler turns the glue into a polymer concrete that's way more robust than any printer filament and automatically bonds to the other piece, when the mold is attached to it.

No, this is similar to mixing cement with sand/gravel to form concrete.

There is of course another approach to this. Simply refuse to change mentions of #Twitter on webpages, etc. at all. Given that "X" is essentially unsearchable (super genius there, Elon), just leaving Twitter intact as the label until the firm folds completely seems a viable option. And that might not take very long relatively.

raccoon,

@lauren

Perhabs he really wants to get rid of it by now and Twitter was just not dying fast enough on its own?

raccoon, to Disney

Not quite sure what the fuss over the 7 dwarves in the 2024 #snowwhite movie is about. Sure, #disney is race swapping the main character again, but this leaked footage looks to me like they were just testing the location with stunt doubles in proto costumes before bringing in the expensive actors.

(why would anyone, especially professional #movies reviewers believe that this is actual footage)?

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-12298801/EXCLUSIVE-Snow-White-Seven-Politically-Correct-Companions.html

raccoon,

@danjac

Yep, but it's mildly irritating how those photos are quoted ad nausea by youtubers as if that was the actual cast of dwarfs in their actual costumes, shot in an actual take.

Everyone who ever saw a making-of should realize at once that this is a preproduction test shot. Especially those who call themselves professional movie reviewers.

Psst, did you hear? #Twitter traffic is tanking! Matthew Prince, CEO of #Cloudfare posted a graph proofing this!

🤦‍♂️

Ok, first things first: Twitter's traffic may very well (and even likely) be tanking, now that #Meta's #Threads is available, but this traffic graph is neither proof, nor derived from credible way of measuring this.

    Think of it as your pocket having a removeable battery that is wrapped inside a protective phone 😜

    If you can't understand how people can escape one corporate social media () just to sign up for the next one (, ,...) and call that an improvement, then you are looking at the wrong thing.

    You see a hellhole run by a demon overlord, they see a platform of fresh opportunities, makings them a promise, doesn't: grow here and you can earn money (bring in your friends!). Grow a lot and you can make a living out of it.

    It's the internet version of Tupperware parties

    raccoon,

    @gotofritz

    Can you think of another reason than money, why people would play these mindless engagement games, that just suck the life out of everyone?

    raccoon,

    @gotofritz @FinchHaven

    This is by far not the only engagement game and in fact, it is not even the actual game itself, but merely a symptom of it.

    The core of the game is the reward build into the fabric of the social network: you gain from increasing other people's screentime (so they see more ads). In this case by turning them into clickmonkeys. This is pretty much the definition of a mindless, life sucking engagement game.
