It’s startling how Bluesky captures the vibe of (classic-era) Twitter, in exactly the way Mastodon doesn’t.

I love how unsatisfying it must be for to toot or tweet about the horrible things those “exclusively white people” are doing at Bluesky (they want to say “men” but can’t because the CEO is a woman.)

I'm trying not to post exclusively about BlueSky but dang it, there's a specific strain of criticism of it that's a good example of a way kind, thoughtful, serious tech people get in their own way.

In particular, the idea that the problem with BlueSky is that it's missing features.

Shipping stuff that's incomplete in order to find out what happens is good. It's necessary. The alternative isn't releasing perfect software the works perfectly. It's releasing nothing and accomplishing nothing.

ratkins,
@ratkins@mastodon.social avatar

@nat And it’s still a (relatively) closed beta! What I really think is stupid and self-destructive is the characterisation that not shipping blocking and moderation features first is a moral failing, appropriately punished by the cancellation of all involved. Fucking grow up.

You understand, right?

Bluesky is funded and developed and operated by THE EXACT SAME PEOPLE who sold your most recent community.

It is the product of exploitative capitalist long-termers who will sell your next community as rapidly and disdainfully as they did your last one, because THEIR INTEREST IN COMMUNITY IS IN EXTRACTING ITS VALUE.

Fedi's hard, sure. And it's not any safer, agreed.

But at least it's not made to benefit the very people who screwed us LESS THAN SIX MONTHS AGO.

@ratkins@mastodon.social avatar

@GeePawHill The parts of this with basis in fact are extremely subjective. Jack funded Bluesky and is on the board but Graber the CEO would most accurately be described as “building and running it” and she’s not ex-Twitter. The lead dev Paul Frazee has said in as many words they regard future-them as a potential attack and they’re building defense against themselves into the protocol. Bluesky itself is incorporated as a public benefit corporation, nobody’s “selling out and getting rich”.

A few years ago I started reading Software Lead Weekly. This is a weekly newsletter that roundups a bunch of really great articles and resources on engineering management and technical leadership. In one edition the concept of a Manager README was shared and I thought it sounded fantastic.

A Manager README is a document that you can share with your team to outline your own my leadership style. I recently finished writing my own here:

https://managerreadme.com/readme/lukestringer90

ratkins,
@ratkins@mastodon.social avatar

@lukestringer90 I’ve seen this and similar things (“my communication style”, “my operating system”) but I can’t fathom how anybody is capable of objectively describing their own quirks this way and how useful it is to others when they try. Surely most useful to your new reports is the assessment of your previous reports.

Me: “I have some very exciting news!”
L (age 4): “What?”
Me: “Juliana Hatfield has a new album!”
L: “What’s an album?”

Things you never anticipated having to take fifteen minutes to explain…

ratkins,
@ratkins@mastodon.social avatar

@whakkee I recently found out that the reason pop songs are typically around three minutes is because that’s what used to fit on a 78 RPM shellac record.

ratkins,
@ratkins@mastodon.social avatar

@whakkee Nope, that came after. A 12” 78 fit a ~3 minute song (depending on manufacturing precision and how close they could put the tracks together) then the 7” 45 RPM vinyl record was made to imitate that. And an EP is a 7” vinyl at 33 RPM. Albums were ~12 tracks because you could fit roughly 6 songs on one side of a 12” 33 RPM vinyl.

ratkins,
@ratkins@mastodon.social avatar

@ajs @whakkee Oh yeah. The way some radio or Spotify exec’s OKRs shape the content of pop songs is wild. Especially because of how opaque it is.

My decision about whether to try Bluesky depends on what everyone else does. I just want to be where everyone else is, and not be around too many Nazis. My needs are simple.

@mattblaze It’s amazing to me that this appears to be a controversial take.

I was suspicious of Bluesky (Jack Dorsey doesn't seem to know... actually I'll just leave that sentence there), then somewhat more sympathetic, but now I see this and man.

If this is how they're approaching moderation on the platform they are going to be very surprised when they start encountering the "real" problems, like organized harassment campaigns and inter-community war.

https://gitlab.com/bluesky-community1/decentralized-ecosystem/-/blob/master/topics/moderation.md

ratkins,
@ratkins@mastodon.social avatar

@nat A two-year-old review of moderation policies of other systems suggests what terrible thing, exactly? People are going bananas about how awful Bluesky is this week without much basis in objectivity.

ratkins,
@ratkins@mastodon.social avatar

@nat I guess we’ll see if the structural change to decentralised moderation is more or less vulnerable to that kind of thing.

Visiting The Netherlands is becoming an increasingly stranger experience for me: at the same time, it's traveling back in time (I grew up here) and visiting the future (many things are so much more modern than where we live). The main thing I'm surprised by is how the average standard of living is (seems to be?) so much higher. With every visit it seems more obvious.

ratkins,
@ratkins@mastodon.social avatar

@chris You’re not seeing things. After living in Berlin for a while any time I’ve gone back and visited the Netherlands you can see how the whole place is obviously dripping with money.

ratkins,
@ratkins@mastodon.social avatar

@chris Yep. Berlin public authorities haven’t caught up with the fact their city isn’t “poor but sexy” anymore, it’s rich and ugly.

ratkins,
@ratkins@mastodon.social avatar

@chris And god forbid anybody who lives here might have any expectations, like not risking you life every time you ride a bicycle or getting a bürgeramt appointment within three months or there not being dog shit all over the footpaths…

@chris Maybe, but we could have been Paris by now!

So folks, don't forget to check if your Ikea chair is compatible with your screen. I'm not kidding. A thread 🧵.

I've had the problem with my new screen for several weeks now, that every now and then the screen goes black for a few seconds.

Today I had enough and wanted to investigate the problem. So I started changing all the cables, plugging the screen into a different socket, and and and. Nothing helped.

@nicklockwood Much to my embarrassment I realised I’d turned auto screen lock off a week ago and forgotten to turn it back on, I’m sure that had a lot to do with it 😅
