Baltimore Oriole in my New Hampshire backyard!

(Sorry I know, not great quality, snapped on my phone from inside my house so super zoomed in).

Getting all the colors today. Orange Oriole, Blue Jay (my pix of him are even more blurred, ergh), red-throated hummingbird, red cardinal, and lots of yellow finches.

Of course, the mosquitoes (or black flies?) are eating me alive so can't sit outside today, but... wonder if that's what's drawing so many birdies.

(my black flies bring all the birds to the yard 🎶)

redcrew,

@deco So pretty! I love this time of year for all the colorful birds.

Sorry to hear mosquitoes have returned; we haven't seen any. Yet.

I put up my first-ever oriole feeder yesterday afternoon.

Guess who visited this morning? My first Baltimore Oriole at the feeder!

redcrew,
@redcrew@mstdn.social avatar

@deco Yay! Aren't they beautiful?

Yes, it was labeled as an oriole feeder. I know some birders who spear orange halves in shrub or tree branches.

redcrew,
@redcrew@mstdn.social avatar

@deco Whoa, bears. Are you in the mountains? Good idea to bring in for night.

Baltimore Oriole returned this morning! For about 30 seconds. I didn't have time to take photo, only to tell my husband the oriole was on the feeder.

Seems to be slower morning for birds; it's 42 degrees Fahrenheit. Yesterday it was in the 50's at the same time.

A solemn day of remembrance.

Three years ago I wrote about the 50th anniversary of the Kent State massacre and my own experience of the May 4 Walking Tour on the Kent State University campus.

Remember their names:

Jeffrey Miller
Sandra Scheuer
William Schroeder

management kills their own taproom/restaurant in .

Blames the closure on sluggish sales mere hours after a second racial discrimination case appears in federal court.

Ink was not even dry yet on the complaint.

What a fucking coincidence.

That employee will possibly be deprived of any measure of justice now.

I want to know if the city put any money into this taproom renovation project. That shit needs to be clawed back.

@adamjcook Thanks for sharing, Adam. I heard the news last night that Founders closed, but didn't know anything about the racial discrimination complaint.

Am I the only person who seriously struggles with Miro boards? Stuff is always outside your view, you can’t have an overview, text is always too small.

Just give me a structured bulleted list in a document or a proper Mindmap.

sigh

redcrew,
@redcrew@mstdn.social avatar

@yatil I struggle with them, too. A bulleted list is much easier for me.

Who's participating in No Mow May 2023?

I have neighbors who mow their lawns twice a week, which I don't understand.

Missed this sad news. I would read her reviews to learn about new restaurants to visit.

Longstanding, prolific Detroit restaurant critic Molly Abraham has died.

    @chris Oh boy. How big are the goslings?

    redcrew,
    @redcrew@mstdn.social avatar

    @chris I've been seeing a lot of small ducklings and goslings. And then I saw some that were almost a foot tall last weekend, surprised me.

    redcrew,
    @redcrew@mstdn.social avatar

    @chris That's what I thought. But other birders reported they had seen larger goslings. Though most are seeing small ones, like you.

    – “Come to Mastodon, it is reasonably accessible here.”
    – “It’s not accessible enough for me. I wouldn’t go anywhere less accessible than Twitter when Twitter was most accessible.”
    – “Fair enough.”
    – “Do you have a bluesky invite?”
    – “First, it’s invitation, and second, bluesky is much less accessible than Masto…”
    – “‘Do you have an invite?’ was the question!”

    Fun on the trails at the University of Michigan-Dearborn Environmental Center earlier this month, on April Fool's Day.

    @chris Here's the alternative text:

    A pheasant made out of straw for the head, neck and body, oval sliced wood pieces with dark centers surrounded by white borders for feathers, and wound twine/rope for feet. The bird with red around the eye and short black bill faces left in front of a fallen tree limb. Muted shrubs and grasses in the background.

    @chris I'm on desktop right now, and alt text always displays automatically under the images, with the Firefox extension I use. No more guessing what an image is about.

    https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/social-visual-alt-text/

    On Tusky, the Android client I use, the word "ALT" displays overlaid in right bottom corner of image. I can select it to view alternative text.

    if you are at , highly recommend visiting the room of old computers… I got to play with a working Apple Lisa from 1983, which is really neat, uses many of the same metaphors we still use today, although some are slightly different

    An unexpected treat after the rain and sleet came down while I was birding on Belle Isle in Detroit, Michigan today: a flock of seven American White Pelicans flew high over the Detroit River.

    @adamjcook I think it will need to be someone in a less cloudy location than Detroit area.

    I checked Detroit and west metro Detroit, both are cloudy tonight.

    Sigh.
