I see how itch io is so convenient to host your games, because it also makes very easy to sell (or have a tip box) and get some bucks (and free hosting), even if you make hobby games; but I kind of miss people having a website independently of that.

Like, who's this person? Do they have a blog? Do they use social media? Do they have a blog? 🤔

First stab at the sound effects!

Not 100% happy with all of them, but progress is progress!

    Now I feel bad about it 🙄

    Meanwhile, I got sidetracked again because this cute thing just arrived. The smaller version of the legendary Big Muff guitar effect pedal. It sounds just like its bigger sibling, noisy and sweet. It was a grunge era favorite and Hendrix allegedly used one as well. Love it. Found it for cheap and the plan is to make some modifications for more versatility (maybe there’s even going to be a video about that in the future).

    Last night I tried to improve the way levers work on tHoS, and I think I need to rework that part of the engine. Also, showing the walls move on a different screen when you use the lever is going to cost 256 extra bytes unless I change a few things (that I don't want to change, tbh).

    Meanwhile I "accidentally" rewrote some bits and save a few bytes. So it may be OK at the end 🤫

    And now with sound where available! 😂

    The default move and the crate move we recorded them with the webcam. Me tapping on the desk and Vic scratching my mouse pad with a piece of cardboard.

    The other sounds were computer generated. The win is CC0 from open game art.

    Ship it!

    The Sokoban clone me and my 6yo have coded together this holidays. Now testing sound effects.

    One thing I have just noticed recently (I may be slow 😅) is that when you check the following list on some Masto user, you get the full list when that user is in the same server as your account; otherwise you get the users your instance knows about (that often times is just me when checking someone I follow).

    And that's a total game changer when discovering people to follow. Which may be a good reason to have account on an instance focused on a common interest, as it may help you find people.

    So "some thoughts about this soon to come 2024" .. I really DO NOT know what to think about .. I mean while personally I can say "I can try to do better or such" .. "globally" I can't see "anything that much better to hope for" politically "all the world is a mess" and I can't see "anything better than before that can come out", the question is more like "what else ( worse ) is going to come" ? .. I don't know .. is there "a better future" in 2024 ? For real ? Mah </pessimism>

    @gilesgoat we shall see. Arguably, I didn't know what to expect from 2023 after 2022, either.

    We are using Lua and Love 2D. Which is not bad, but Lua is awkward. It could also be that I know Python well, but not Lua.

    Anyway, our Sokoban clone is almost finished.

    reidrac,
    @reidrac@social.sdf.org avatar

    @vga256 add to that: no deep copy? 😅

    reidrac,
    @reidrac@social.sdf.org avatar

    @vga256 it is a convenient wrapper around SDL, would you say? PyGame always felt like doing too little (needs you to write the game loop) and too much at the same time with classes for sprites, animation and such.

    reidrac, to random
    @reidrac@social.sdf.org avatar

    Vic wants to learn Python, which is fine, but he also wants to make a game that is a bit unrealistic considering his only experience y copying Scratch examples.

    I think it may be better to do some Lua with Love 2D because it will give more results, faster.

    The other option I guess is Godot, but he wants to write code, and I don't know Godot anyway.

    It's 2023 and browsers still don't have native autogrowing textareas :(

    reidrac,
    @reidrac@social.sdf.org avatar

    @Tijn how would you implement that auto-growing functionality?

    A regular textarea can be resized; it kind of bothers me that some rich textarea components remove that (e.g. the input for a toot in masto website).

    reidrac,
    @reidrac@social.sdf.org avatar

    @nivrig sorry, let me clarify: with work laptop is for work I meant that I can't trust it to do anything else 😅 because the MITM.

    It sometimes gets in the way, that's bad. But I'm also not a fan of "telemetry" because wtf you're paying me why you don't trust me?

    But I get it, because not everybody is sensible unfortunately.

    Is not a bad book, but all the cool sprite art used on it is not available, so the end result is not as flashy, obviously. Vic is enjoying it tho.

    Two things spring to mind from this piece about Tory cruelty regarding spousal visas:

    1. We are now at the stage where only the rich will be able to fall in love with anyone other than a Brit. “Know your place!”

    2. Even when directly impacted by this rule, a lifelong Tory voter says they wouldn’t vote Labour – they’d just not vote. Astonishing.

    https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2023/dec/17/we-sacrificed-so-much-to-be-here-couples-lives-in-disarray-after-new-uk-visa-rules

    reidrac,
    @reidrac@social.sdf.org avatar

    @craiggrannell that's the whole point of polarising in politics, isn't it? People are supposed to vote "theirs" and never "the others"; is like being a supporter of a football team.

    Is not about ideas, it is about "team colours".
