In the early days, trance rarely had vocals or if it did they were just another instrument among many. The idea of trance was to help the dancer get into a certain mental state which is beyond words and having too many vocals tends to pull things down into the concrete and breaks the spell. As everything became more...

Even on my more pedestrian hardware Google Earth works fine with Firefox.

OP, check if your FF has WebGL enabled.

You're looking for meaning where there is none. Fascism does not want to make sense, it very intentionally rejects reason and logic. To fascists, force and power is the only real politics. Few people really grasp how deep the nihilism of it is.

The chaos is an end in itself.

Modern irrationality rooted in cognitive biases

"We are constantly making decisions with our limited time and cognitive resources and memory storage.

"We're not robots, and the fact that you can seemingly Google your way to anything does not make us smarter."

She was plagued by the idea that while we're living in the information age, life seems to be making less sense.

"It certainly doesn't seem to be feeling any better, even though the quality of life is overall actually improving.

"Our innate irrationalities, that have always existed, are being dialled up to 11 because of the culture that we've created."

Cognitive bias is a mental magic trick that we developed in order for us to make sense of the world sufficiently to survive it, she says.

"The natural world was always too much for us to process, if we had to catalogue the precise colour and shape of every twig in order to understand it, that would take more than a lifetime.

"So, we came up with these cognitive biases, dozens upon dozens of them. And they help us make decisions without our even noticing."

Every human has cognitive biases, but when they collide with digital information overload, bad things can happen

I know an old person in a tropical country. A few months ago she started having blood pressure issues so her doctor put her on about 3 or 4 different medications. They didn't help very much.

Then about a month ago she got air-conditioning in one of the rooms of her house. Boom, blood pressure problems all solved immediately.

Content Warnings Do Not Reduce Distress, Study Shows

Advocates for the use of trigger warnings suggest that they can help people avoid or emotionally prepare for encountering content related to a past trauma. But trigger warnings may not fulfill either of these functions, according to an analysis published in Clinical Psychological Science.

Patriarchy has everything to do with men, but at the same time, nothing at all (bikepacking.com)

Patriarchy has everything to do with men, but at the same time, nothing at all. In a male-centered society where maleness is associated with power, what’s really being centered is power itself. What’s suppressed is mutual relationality. Patriarchy is intertwined with colonialism, racism, and other oppressive social...

Employers would absolutely love to be able to ask their pet AI "hey tell me who to fire based on their computer usage"...

rimu,
@rimu@piefed.social avatar

You can see how using AI to analyze a video (effectively a video, they didn't say how often the screenshots are taken but they'd need to be pretty often for it to work) of their entire work life the whole time they've been at a company takes it to another level tho, right?

Zelensky: 'Our partners fear that Russia will lose this war' (kyivindependent.com)

President Volodymyr Zelensky believes that Ukraine’s partners “are afraid of Russia losing the war” and would like Kyiv “to win in such a way that Russia does not lose,” Zelensky said in a meeting with journalists attended by the Kyiv Independent....

Yeah although if Russia wins it'd involve "unstable geopolitics" too.

This could be a long war.

Wheat production is down 15% since November, the biggest reduction in cropped areas since 2020. Oilseed rape is down 28%, the biggest reduction since the 1980s, and winter barley is down 22% at 355,000 hectares, the biggest reduction since 2020.

So, the above effects, every 3 years.

And we're just getting started.

Durian.

Texture of banana but with a huge seed. Tastes like a strange combination of rotten eggs, whipped cream, vanilla ice cream, diced garlic, onions, cheese, and... caramel?

It's fucked. Never again.

This is how it's done. USA, take note.

National will never do anything like this. Even weed. A total non-starter.

Gender bias in open source: Pull request acceptance of women versus men (www.researchgate.net)

Our results show that women's contributions tend to be accepted more often than men's [when their gender is hidden]. However, when a woman's gender is identifiable, they are rejected more often. Our results suggest that although women on GitHub may be more competent overall, bias against them exists nonetheless.
