@jospueyo @opengeohub yep have tried and opened an issue this morning: https://github.com/rstudio/rstudio/issues/13522 promising, looking good!

Prepparing materials for @opengeohub 2023 and just added this to my slides. It's been there for over a year but still find the automatic handling of spherical geometry in {sf} amazing. If you're always transforming from geographic projection (e.g. EPSG:4326) to projected (e.g. EPSG:27700 in the UK) and new to this will blow your mind 🤯

looking like the death of the other place is near, depending on what the demise of the block function actually ends up looking like - though I've not yet worked out whether it's here or bluesky (even if that place is owned by the previous Twitter pipsqueak)

anyway, have a picture of a Fiat 127

@underdarkGIS Yeah. Change takes time. There was a spike then slight decline in daily users but in terms of quality of content and general vibe and other places in the open fediverse including are doing great.

Playing with network simplification methods... Visvalingam algorithm way more effective, but seems unable to merge parallel lines on more complex networks. Any ideas on how to do this? A short thread with links... First-up: Visvalingam works well for simple example!

@robinlovelace@fosstodon.org avatar

robinlovelace,
@robinlovelace@fosstodon.org avatar

The problem is: it doesn't work for complicated networks. The near identical parallel lines here are not merged even with aggressive simplification. Any ideas how to further simplify this while preserving network topology?

@robinlovelace@fosstodon.org avatar

Credit to @martinfleis for great explanation in this blog post, plus reproducible code (tested: works great): https://martinfleischmann.net/line-simplification-algorithms/ Any ideas anyone else reading this? 🙏 cc also @underdarkGIS @mszll, @MikeMahoney218 and anyone else interested in network simplification.

@gicycle Not yet but surely worth a try. An interesting feature of responses so far: no silver bullet, and lots of edge cases, so need for a function that is general enough for different use cases yet specific enough not to get bloated..

@robinlovelace@fosstodon.org avatar

@migurski Many thanks, this looks really handy!

robinlovelace,
@robinlovelace@fosstodon.org avatar

@nyalld Sounds like perfect case for a function that has options and deals with the various edge cases. No 'one size fits all' solution -> ideal scenario where research, backed by reproducible code that one day could be packaged, could be handy. On the case!

@mszll Heads up there is a research ask in the UK that you may be well placed for. More via email incoming!
