@mszll Same! Our 2 year-old just got back from playground. Reading this made me wonder why we've had to create dedicated fenced-off places for children. Because the environments we've created are too dangerous, primarily due to transport infrastructure enabling 1+ tonne metal boxes free roam?

robinlovelace,
@robinlovelace@fosstodon.org avatar

@martinfleis @mszll not everything but they are likely to be a factor. How big a factor? Good research question that can help answer!

@martinfleis @mszll now we're back in H2020 there's more opportunity. Early 2024 I'll be in grant funding mode and would love to collaborate!

@giocomai @mszll @martinfleis that is a great natural experiment idea!

Shout-out to experienced people out there: I've just updated the README of our Geocomputation with Python book and want to get a sanity check. Is this good advice? Thanks to authors @michaeldorman84, @underdarkGIS and @nowosad it's coming together! 🙏 https://github.com/geocompx/geocompy/pull/204

robinlovelace,
@robinlovelace@fosstodon.org avatar

Also and possibly more importantly: do the instructions work? Hope so, any feedback welcome!

robinlovelace,
@robinlovelace@fosstodon.org avatar

Aaand in the interests of user friendliness, please see here the updated RFC README (diff is pretty hard to interpret): https://github.com/geocompx/geocompy/blob/readme-clean/README.md

robinlovelace,
@robinlovelace@fosstodon.org avatar

@adelgado @michaeldorman84 @underdarkGIS @nowosad Thanks for the info, latest version of the README uses a venv after feedback, much appreciated. See here for latest version: https://github.com/geocompx/geocompy/blob/readme-clean/README.md#install-dependencies-with-pip thoughts on package manager + micromamba bits also v welcome.

robinlovelace,
@robinlovelace@fosstodon.org avatar

@diazona Thanks, that would be appreciated. README in the PR now recommends "python -m venv geocompy" (not sure what the -m is but never mind) before pip install. Your feedback + giving it a try: greatly appreciated!

robinlovelace,
@robinlovelace@fosstodon.org avatar

@hugovk what's the advantage of that over creating and activating a venv first and then running pip install?

robinlovelace,
@robinlovelace@fosstodon.org avatar

@diazona That's a great explanation in plain English (or at least plainer than Python docs IMO!), many thanks. I'm also looking into "python -m pip install -r requirements.txt" as recommended by @hugovk.

robinlovelace,
@robinlovelace@fosstodon.org avatar

@diazona @hugovk seems "pip install -r requirements.txt" and "python -m pip install -r requirements.txt" are equivalent unless you specify a different Python version.

@robinlovelace@fosstodon.org avatar

@hugovk good point, just took a look (after hastily replying). Patience, working on it. Thanks again!

@hugovk @diazona @pillow

I'm persuaded. Instructions updated:

@martinfleis @michaeldorman84 @underdarkGIS @nowosad no good reason, we should update! Any suggestions on how to do PKG updates in env.yml? Would be good to automate in gh action in thinking.

robinlovelace,
@robinlovelace@fosstodon.org avatar

@martinfleis @michaeldorman84 @underdarkGIS @nowosad agree we should test on latest 4 sure

robinlovelace,
@robinlovelace@fosstodon.org avatar

@hugovk I think your toot is good, is open, and encourages others to join the conversation (on infrastructure in this case)!

{stats19} package just released, aged 3.0.0 🎉 This version enables access to all the new wonderful road collision/casualty/driver datasets released by DfT. Notably:

  • get_collisions() replaces get_accidents()
  • get_stats19() works again!
