Happy to announce that I will be speaking at the SymfonyLive Berlin 2024 conference at the end of June about Gally, the advanced searchandising engine built on top of Symfony, API Platform, and Elasticsearch.

It’s not something I discuss much, mainly because it makes me more depressed to talk about, but I suffer from dysthymia, or persistent depressive disorder. I am always depressed. Always. Sometimes more, sometimes less, but always.

Please don’t tell me about some medical treatment I should try, or how you sometimes feel “sad,” too. That’s not why I’m sharing.

I’m sharing because it might help to understand why I seem emotional and irrational at times over things like programming languages.

ronnorthrip,
@ronnorthrip@phpc.social avatar

@ramsey Its not uncommon in our community. We just dont talk about it that much.

I think part of that is that we live in the space between the shitty code that is and towering perfection that could be.

I also think you gotta remember that depression lies. Constant blatant trump-like lies about every stupid thing.

And also you're among friends, we're here with you. And support you.

As a rule, people forget that so much shitty behaviour on web sites is because someone either needed to hit a bonus/OKR/get promoted or because they do not actually use the product they are building.

ronnorthrip,

@grmpyprogrammer Biggest problem in the software world is people making the buy decision are most often not making the use decision

phpc.social just hit 4500 users, slightly before the Mastodon user count hit 15 million. Thanks to everyone choosing to make this instance your home on the fediverse!

As a reminder, server costs aren't free, and our OpenCollective proceeds exclusively go toward the various costs involved in maintaining this instance. For those of y'all who've donated, thanks for your support!

@ian link please

ronnorthrip,
@ronnorthrip@phpc.social avatar

@ramsey @ian I just chipped in!

Do you guys do an annual pledge drive like wikipedia?

If so I haven't seen it.

ronnorthrip,
@ronnorthrip@phpc.social avatar

@ramsey @ian Not sure if we should do it as a masto feature or just locally but I figured something like a box at the top of the pages or maybe just a notification.

Keep it simple for the first round is probably best.

ronnorthrip,
@ronnorthrip@phpc.social avatar

@ramsey @ian That's why I was thinking about a notification from the server admins - that WOULD show up everywhere

ronnorthrip,
@ronnorthrip@phpc.social avatar

@ramsey @ian If we made it a standard mast feature it would probably make its way down to the clients.

ronnorthrip,
@ronnorthrip@phpc.social avatar

@ramsey @ian
I think it might be more obvious if it were under the nav ui

ronnorthrip,
@ronnorthrip@phpc.social avatar

@ramsey @ian I also think we'd get more traction with apps if it was at that level so devs could see that its missing

ronnorthrip,
@ronnorthrip@phpc.social avatar

@ramsey @ian ok now my brain is working. We could also ASK our favorite apps to support the server notification better too

ronnorthrip,
@ronnorthrip@phpc.social avatar

@ramsey @ian What do you think about moving server notifications under notifications with 'All' and 'Mentions'?
More importantly it needs to NOT hide. Since it's not used often it needs a HOME that users and devs can see. Especially since its not frequently used, but its use is IMPORTANT

ronnorthrip,
@ronnorthrip@phpc.social avatar

@ramsey @ian API wise I would add a way to send server announcements WITH a notification too. And that WOULD show up for the audience we have now

ronnorthrip,
@ronnorthrip@phpc.social avatar

@ian @ramsey I totally get you on that, but I'd suggest that the kind of admin notifications that you've been doing would go PERFECTLY in server notifications.

But your note a couple days ago was what got me to support, for what its worth.

ronnorthrip,
@ronnorthrip@phpc.social avatar

@ian @ramsey Working off persistent ones might be interesting. If the persistent one goes away and a new persistent one is added later does that one get a notification too?

ronnorthrip,
@ronnorthrip@phpc.social avatar

@ian @ramsey Well then that's probably the shortest route.

I am really impressed with . I love how easy creating an admin interface is, including things such as filters.

ronnorthrip,

This whole job-search experience has left me quite jaded and cynical. I don’t think I’ll look at my open source contributions the same way again. I’ve never contributed for the sake of putting it on my resume, but I now know for certain that absolutely no one cares about your open source contributions. Managers and engineers will use as much open source as they can to do their work, but they have absolutely no care about who makes it or how it comes to be. It’s all magical, free labor to them.
