getting really tired of the response to bigots, where they film some clip of queer people acting non-puritanical in some way, by liberals being that queers need to "think of the optics".

  1. bigots will make "the optics" negative no matter what happens, including just lying

  2. optics policing to ensure that queers are remanded to only puritanical public expression is just as bad as what the bigots are doing

we should stop using the term "self host". It encourages making services that are only used individually. Not everyone can host their own services, and those capable of hosting should figure out ways to share services with others.

Other options might be:

  • community host
  • mutual host
  • affinity host
  • friendly host
  • neighbor host
  • peer host

landlords: demand is up, time to raise the rents

when there is a huge amount of houses vacant

landlords: gotta cover the operating costs to cover the unoccupied units, time to raise the rents

some of the discourse is trying to do the liberal cliche of "choosing between the lesser of two evils". we don't have to do that.

yessss, the concept of closed-gardens being dying malls is spreading. I'm pretty sure I'm the first to make this comparison (about 4 years ago), but I'm so happy to see others taking the idea (or interdependently conceiving it, it's not like it's some profound thing) and running with it.

sometimes I think about how different the fediverse would be if we, from the start, invested in allow-list federation models and had supplementary services that helped facilitate discovery of other instances to allow.

AI is replacing police non-emergency in Portland. It's going to be a nightmare we can't even fully comprehend.

...

But will it be worse than the Portland Police?

The push from the right to make US muslims an adversary of the queer community is BS. It is trying to stoke anti-lgbtq hate and islamaphobia with a one-two punch.

If people try to push this crap just remind them that US muslims are more accepting of queer people than US white evangelicals.

it looks like Sync (one of the third party API apps on Reddit) is going to be developing a new version for Lemmy ๐Ÿ‘€

Since one of the complaints about federated sites is that they are not intuitive and have bad UI, it will be interesting to have a project that is considered better in those departments than the corporate counterpart moving to the fediverse.

While we discuss the negatives of an instagram fediverse client (which there are many serious concerns) we should also discuss the inclusion of groups that it will bring.

For your instance (and maybe this one) the right answer will still be to block them, but for others seeking to connect with marginalized communities, people they organize with, friends, family, people living in other areas of the world, etc it might be worth the cost.

Again, maybe it's not, but we should be careful of running off newcomers completely, and if newcomers just see "fuck off, you are not welcome here" that might not be great.

How do we maximize our communities, accessibility, autonomy and privacy while minimizing the poser companies like facebook have? That's the question I'm asking myself.

Been using this since this morning and it does what it says on the tin. If you click a link that goes to a reddit thread you get the wayback page. Super helpful to find information I need when searching, but gives no traffic to reddit. So, as communities relocate the historical knowledge will still be accessible.

A Religious Nonprofit [in Portland] Connects Homeless People to Shelter. Itโ€™s Backed by a Private Security Company.

"Loving One Another, while registered as a 501(c)(3), is not your typical nonprofit. It was created by Alex Stone, the founder of a private security company, Echelon Protective Services, that supplies armed guards to downtown businesses fed up with sidewalk camping and the crime associated with drug use."

Finally created an account on the reddit alternative I actually like and already visit. raddle.me

There are some people in the development team I've gotten in arguments with before, but they come out of the traditions of indymedia and the like instead of open source projects trying to emulate venture capitalist apps.

It's not federated ... who cares ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ . Someone could add ActivityPub integration later if it's actually useful.

Kbin makes me feel like it will crash and burn in a week or two (maybe I'm wrong, idk).
