I have my own domains, and use a separate email address for every website that I sign up with.

A side-effect is that I'll start receiving spam to an address associated with a site I used 10+ years ago and forgot about.

I don't remember the exact site, and I'm not sure if it's worth reporting it to them. My experience with that is that site operators are hostile and insist they weren't hacked.

Reminder that "pronatalism" is a "rationalist" response to white supremacist fears about a conspiracy to "replace" them, and if this is surfacing in silicon valley now then it's been bubbling under for a decade or two (those large families take time to make, especially if interracial adoption and fertility treatments are a no-no for the neo-nazis).

I'm getting weary of going online and learning about yet another weird fascist niche hangup that wealthy white guys in the tech sector have.

This stuff has been simmering since WW2, no maybe since the Bolshevik revolution 100+ years ago.

I wish there was more talk about how to deprogram these cultists.

“Google won’t comment on a potentially massive leak of its search algorithm documentation - The Verge”

So this is what the SEO types have been shouting about

@baldur

I'm always a bit suspicious of professional SEO types.

There is an inherent conflict between helping a search engine index a site so that it will show up where it is relevant, and gaming the system so that it's listed on top.

If you live in the UK or USA, you need to understand one thing about the coming election:

You need to vote defensively.

Neither of the main parties are appealing. But if you don't vote for the lesser evil you may end up helping a totalitarian horror get elected.

Hold your nose and goddamn vote, dammit. THEN go on protests. Because if you don't vote for the lesser evil, the victor will welcome your protests with bullets.

The prize for political purity this time round is a shallow grave.

@cstross

Yes. People need to understand that politics is about making things happen, not virtue signalling.

@Uraael @cstross

If all you're doing is complaining about the choice and not voting, then yes, it's virtue signalling.

@Uraael @cstross

If you're giving up on getting a lot of other to care about yhe things you care about, then there's no point in complaining about politicians who don't care about these things.

WTF is this tech bro obsession with Scarlett Johansson?

This goes back years.

In 2016 somebody made a robot version of her https://www.vulture.com/2016/04/engineer-built-a-scarlett-johansson-robot-hm.html

It's beyond creepy.

I don't agree, fully.

"housekeeping" refers to cleaning up (e.g. deleting temp file cruft) as well as improving and redesigning (e.g. updating the code as systems upgrade and evolve).

"tech debt" refers to temporary or poor quality work that needs to be fixed in the future. It's akin to replacing a cracked panel held together with duct tape.

But confused business logic grows organically, and feels like tech debt instead of housekeeping.

At work we managed to contact somebody who was crawling our site with a strange bot.

The said that they were using an academic dataset of URLs that was licenced to be "used freely for any purpose".

There's a difference between using the data (a list of URLs) and actually requesting those URLs.

Just opened my ThinkPad and for the second time in three days the act of closing the laptop to sleep it, then opening it again had caused Ubuntu to hardlock. This time I got a very brief small printout about "amd ring 0 error", then it went back to a black screen and I had to hold down the power button again.

I thought getting a ThinkPad, getting AMD cpu/gpu and picking the Linux distro Lenovo lists as supported would mean I got a minimally functioning computer but I guess not.

If the upgrade destroys the data on your disk, then it could be worse.
