@yvonnezlam Made famous in the NewCrafts closing keynote … was a perfect moment set up by other talks here.

In this talk, I say things I've been too shy to say on stage. I'm glad I did. They are true and necessary mindshifts in the increasingly-complex world of software systems. I wish you could hear the audience, they were wonderful! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PPaTTh6N7DE&t=2s

After watching the movie Anatomy of a Fall, I couldn’t sleep. It is a psychologically chilling, and familiar, experience of what happens when a woman is vulnerable to the judgement of men. The tone and patterns are the background music of our lives. I’m grateful it exists, it turns up the volume.

diana,
@diana@hachyderm.io avatar

@vsaw I haven't seen it - was it worth watching?

https://appleinsider.com/articles/24/01/14/apple-offers-austin-relocation-to-121-san-diego-employees-in-office-closure the take-away is that people, possibly with families, are being asked to relocate from a place with high personal rights to one with low personal rights. Paying for the moving van isn’t really an appropriate response.

@puercomal @matthewskelton
Specifically, woman are being asked to move from a place where abortion is legal to a place where it is not legal. Or lose their jobs (in an industry with constant layoffs). That's some next level sh*t.

So, I'm reading up on SAFe (don't judge me I have reasons). Was delighted to learn that principle #2 is "Apply Systems Thinking"...

...until I read the overview here: https://scaledagileframework.com/apply-systems-thinking/ especially "Only Management Can Change the System."

Boy howdy do I have thoughts.

Sure, the people who make & enforce policy, and who set financial incentives, have an advantage.

But everyone in a system affects the system. Not understanding that leads to a whole lot of management fails...

diana,
@diana@hachyderm.io avatar

@testobsessed Not about SaFe (I confess, I'm not a fan) but systems thinking focused on software systems https://www.oreilly.com/library/view/learning-systems-thinking/9781098151324/

Early in my career as a systems architect, I felt alone with the challenges I faced. Now, I am surrounded by people who understand. The key to our success is learning from each other and sharing insights. We are all in this together.

Prediction: at least 90% of orgs doing "cloud repatriation" (aka "how hard can it be to run some infrastructure, ffs?") are going to get a nasty shock when they re-discover all the reasons that people moved to cloud in the first place: running infrastructure at even modest scale is absolutely not trivial.

Combine that with re-discovering all the basics of hand-offs, on-call, and other DevOps 101 stuff, it's going to a wild fscking ride 🏇

@matthewskelton @nick_tune Shouldn't everyone experience the joy of getting out of line at Tower of Terror on the second day of their first vacation in four years because the site got hacked through that one server running under someone's desk providing an old service that nobody has patched in three years?

PSA: "It's hard to find women to speak at events in Tech" - this is pure bullshit 💩

It's hard to convince women to risk attending a mostly-male event when they cannot see your ally-ship, maybe. But there are plenty of smart, highly capable women in Tech that would significantly enhance your event by speaking there.

Build your network. Listen to women. Then get a 50:50 women:men organizing team. 🧑‍🤝‍🧑 Then listen some more.

Maybe then women will say "yes" to your event.

@matthewskelton If you are stuck, talk to NewCrafts (Paris), DDD EU, Codecamp Romania, Betterways, Kandddsky, Agile Meets Architecture, Global Architecture Summit, iSAQB Software Architecture Gathering and other events where I met lots of other women speakers.

Oh, and pay for the plane ticket.

@matthewskelton @elizayer I'm frustrated that I can't boost with a comment. So when I respond, it seems like I'm talking to you instead of adding to your post. Obviously I am signing to the choir here :) I admire your community building skills.

diana,
@diana@hachyderm.io avatar

@elizayer @matthewskelton This question of "signals" came up at a recent conference where the diversity among the speakers was significantly higher than among attendees. Next time we chat, I'd love to hear what signals you use. I know a few other speakers also trying to describe them.

Agree @diana ?

@yellowbrickc @virtualddd Yes and it was something you said that I found perfect and provocative. Can't remember your exact words but it was about measuring the wrong thing. It was wise and got me thinking this :)

Yo, Twitter holdouts... 🙋‍♂️

Just suggesting now might be a good time to give some renewed consideration to leaving the social media platform you are supporting with your continued use.

We have a nice open platform here, if you want to give it a try. 🤷
