There are a lot of people running around out here whose parents should have yelled at them a bit more.

In retrospect my time at CloudBees was very informative.

I learned a lot about how much of a pain in the ass it is to sell developers tools which will make their lives better.

A very useful lesson for anybody in Infrastructure or Platform engineering teams 🙃

Great news team!

A vendor has sent me a check for $1.00.

I guess what I'm saying is that lunch is on me.

"Redis is going to be another Hudson"

"Valkey will be the new Jenkins"

High praise from @bcantrill on the work the Valkey community is doing, and a hat-tip to the work we did to extricate ourselves from Oracle so many years ago in the Jenkins community 🤗

@josh We're typically on the same page regarding LF, but nobody else seems to know how to fund or fundraise worth a shit.

PSF is the only one that comes close IMHO and they're still lower than what high profile LF foundations operate with.

It's not that nothing was learned from heartbleed, or that nothing will be learned from xz

It's that modern software is sprawlingly complex and accrues technical debt at an obscene pace.

We cannot expect to prevent this class of failure when literally every aspect of the industry is incentivized not to address the root causes here.

Getting a new device is just awful.

Everything is trying to sell you shit, or collect your data to sell you shit, or collect your data to sell your shit data.

    Just awful.

The only local pharmacy I knew, now no longer exists. So there's CVS, Walgreens, and Rite Aid.

    They are all categorically shit.

Left Walgreens because they never had prescriptions ready, would only start filling them if you showed up.

CVS is always understaffed, and now has their drive thru window covered with cardboard.

National chains are a cancer. Even without monopolies there's no competition.

@chrisjrn interesting suggestions as always! From eastern Santa Rosa, most of the better options are 30+ minutes in the car away. Tough to decie between which time evils I want to suffer. 😦

With the adoption of the Business Source License, Hashicorp Nomad is no longer viable for my compute orchestration needs. I am not aware of alternatives that aren't containers all the way down :/

I am thrilled that I am able to hire another full time Senior Data Engineer in North America for my organization at Scribd.

At a high level my team:

    • created the Rust bindings, kafka-delta-ingest, and a number of other Rust based data tools.
    • has presented multiple times at Data and AI Summit
    • works at the leading edge of the Databricks platform
    • is remote-first, spanning 3-5 continents depending on the time of year 😆 (we write a lot of stuff down!)

Between myself, friends, and family I have been observing a pretty consistent moving of goal-posts by managers across industries.

To be considered good at version 2024 of your job frequently means doing much more than version 2023 of your job.

Dumping more work in the name of agility or efficiency masquerading as "career growth".

Once upon a time I was developing a concept which was basically NPR for open source project infrastructure.

By operating infra and selling it back to foundations and companies, actual people could be employed to run this stuff at scale.

That could also fund free tier services for the long tail of small projects.

Or we could stick to our current model of burnt out infra maintainers, foundations paying small potatoes to contractors, and rapidly evaporating free cloud credits.

    That's cool too
