    @ryanhoulihan Sorry to hear that! Outside of "sir, this is a Wendy's" I think it's probably fair to remove sir/ma'am from the social vocabulary in general. I'm trying to remove it from mine, at least. There are so many better alternatives! “pal", “friend”, "dude”, “fucker”, etc etc.

    @ryanhoulihan I wouldn't be opposed to "your holyness” tbh

    someone created a Godot plugin to open Unity packages and prefabs. this is game changing, just imagine reusing your unity assets to port a game to Godot from Unity. https://www.reddit.com/r/godot/comments/13io0bx/load_unitypackage/

    People complain that the Switch is underpowered, but meanwhile Nintendo releases not one but two of the best huge open world games of all time on it.

    samf,
    @samf@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

    @bigzaphod Oh it's definitely underpowered! TotK will sell like hotcakes, and well deserved as by all accounts it’s a fantastic game. But it kinda breaks my heart to imagine how much more beautiful the game would be running on more modern hardware. They've had to cut a lot of corners to make the game work—which, honestly, is a testament to the quality of the art/dev team—but I can't wait to play the inevitable remaster in 2-4 years.

    samf,
    @samf@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

    @louie @bigzaphod Oh, I hear you on that for sure. I'm not looking for a photorealistic experience or anything. There are just a lot of rough edges (low-res textures, rough lighting and shadows, etc) that are almost certainly a result of hardware limitations. It doesn't feel like they're able to fully execute on the artistic vision, even taking the stylized look into account.

    samf,
    @samf@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

    @louie @bigzaphod Sorry, did I imply that this was an either/or situation or a universal truth? I'm sure the game is going to be a game-of-the-year contender, clearly it’s a huge success in every way! And it's by no means an ugly game. Just that the Switch experience, on the whole, is at least a step or 3 behind almost everyone else. TotK is going to succeed in spite of its platform, and I just want to see what that team could do if they weren’t tied down as much.

    samf,
    @samf@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

    @louie @bigzaphod Like if Elden Ring had a shorter draw distance or lower-res textures, would it be a worse game? Of course not. Gameplay is the priority, graphics are means to an end.

    samf,
    @samf@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

    @louie @bigzaphod I guess? To be clear, I'm not anti-Nintendo or something. No bias here. We have multiple Switches in our house and I’m a 30+ year long Nintendo fan. This isn't a “nintendo sux xbox rules" situation or anything. But, objectively, the console itself is behind every current-gen console and PC handheld in almost every metric besides a handful of first-party-exclusive titles and that it's physically lighter.

    samf,
    @samf@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

    @louie @bigzaphod 100% agree here. I'd rather play FEWER photorealistic games to be honest.

    samf,

    @louie @bigzaphod Okay. :) Have a great time playing the game!

    Still working on my cover.

    Lately I've felt so depressed and soulless about my art that it feels like I'm just faking it.

    I hate how everything I draw looks but I'm going to keep trying because what else can I do at this point?

    samf,
    @samf@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

    @taylormccue I've been in a similar headspace lately about stuff I've been making. Everything feels derivative or half-baked or just…trash. Must be something in the air.

    I fully approve this “what else can I do" message. Trying to get more comfortable with the notion that most of what I make isn't going to be Good™. Almost none of it will be. But that's okay. (...I think?)

    composergreg, to synths

    During my recent multi-week camping adventure, I allowed myself ONE synth.

    It was the ASM Hydrasynth. Why? (I don't actually hear you ask...)

    Well, it's terribly powerful and I rarely use it. Maybe I don't KNOW it well enough? What magic is lurking in those digitally aliased cracks and crevasses?

    So I spent 3 weeks alone with the Hydra and this is the first thing I created with it...

    @samf@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

    @composergreg @synths @synthdiy I'm woefully uninformed about Hydrasynth but this is really cool to hear! Big Microfreak fan (haven't made the Minifreak leap yet) but it feels like there are a lot of similarities.

    On BlueSky people seem to be excited about their platform.

    On Mastodon people seem to be embarrassed about their platform.

    (Please note this is unscientific and it's not my intention to hype or diss anything. It's just the vibes I'm seeing.)

    samf,
    @samf@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

    @thomasfuchs Wow! I've had the exact opposite experience. Mastodon has room to grow and improve, no doubt, but the vibe in my timeline at least is chill, supportive, and optimistic. BlueSky is another Jack Dorsey project, half-baked and basically a tech bro echo chamber. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

    samf,
    @samf@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

    @thomasfuchs I am not (by choice) but I've done a fair amount of research and have observed other folks’ experiences. There are certainly things BlueSky excels at—UX and search being the two primary areas I've seen—but beyond that, it sounds to be a shallow experience.

    And honestly, just on principle alone, it's not for me. I've been doing web dev long enough to know that “we're a VC funded company with an OSS product" smell, and where it usually leads. Recent example, Google/Chromium/JPEG-XL
