In the year of our lord 2024, these are things I never want to see as a marketing hook ever again:

"solo developer”

"developed the game’s engine and editor from scratch while using it to make the game”

"Super Low latency”

"looks like it could have come from the Commodore 64 era” (it very much does not)

(https://blog.playstation.com/2022/07/20/how-animal-well-taps-into-ps5-hardware-to-elevate-2d-pixel-art-platforming/)

samf,
@samf@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@aeva It's one of those "citation needed" things for me, especially when touted on the engine side. Feels gimmicky. Of all the factors that may introduce noticeable latency at millisecond scale—monitor refresh rate, wireless input interference—the game/engine itself usually isn't the primary culprit these days. Especially in 2D games, and even more so in 2D platformers where we have all the old tricks (coyote time, jump buffering, et al.) for improving feel.

samf,
@samf@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@aeva Fair enough! I'm not big into most genres that get frame-precise (fighting games, for example) and I've never noticed latency as a player where it was bad enough to disrupt my experience.

Maybe it's just me! I grew up on games like Mega Man with some arguably lousy/ice-skate’y controls, so it's entirely possible that I'm more comfortable with iffy timing? Or at least don't notice it as much, perhaps. I'll take any modern platformer’s latency over MM2.

"The entire experience feels just like a MacBook"

Seriously what is the point then?

Why would anyone not just get the laptop that has a lot more apps for it and an operating system that doesn't suck for multitasking?

samf,
@samf@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@thomasfuchs Because a folding touchscreen MacBook with detachable keyboard doesn't exist yet

samf,
@samf@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@thomasfuchs I mean, perhaps YOU don’t. But as a daily iPad + Magic Keyboard user, with use-cases that prefer the keyboard and trackpad while some prefer touch, I certainly would!

samf,
@samf@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@thomasfuchs I think you're conflating your personal needs/experience with everyone's needs/experience here. This "very small niche" you speak of is multiple billion dollar industries.

But, seriously. About the memes.

Waaaay back when, I saw a bunch of My Little Pony reaction images. That led me to watching Friendship is Magic (the first few seasons anyway) and it was so much better than I was expecting out of a show made to sell toys.

Lately I've been seeing Pomni everywhere so I looked up the source... I was supposed to go to bed an hour ago. I've now binged most of The Amazing Digital Circus and it's so good. Can't wait for episode 3

@beeoproblem My daughter is OBSESSED with TADC. And she generally has pretty good taste in animation (Adventure Time, Gravity Falls) so it’s on my radar!

How about a #ScreenshotSaturday with a fun twist? 🍋🍸

Post one snapshot from your project without any additional context and let people in the comments guess what your game is about!

I'm physically well. I just don see much future. I can't make Godot work as i need, My pc takes almost an hour to open an unreal project and unity... is unity.

I use godot because is very light. My pc cant handle much more.

They denied my disability again this year, so in general futures seems very dark.

I been trying to be positive, but truth is that being poor and disable is almost a guarantee to keep being poor and disabled.

samf,
@samf@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@YoSoyFreeman You've been making really incredible progress on the Godot character controller + collision work. Seems like it’s much better than what Godot offers today, but isn't quite perfect?

In similar situations I've been in, I've found it helpful to know when to call it "good enough” and move on to the next thing. With where things stand today, what's still required to use it in an actual game?

Hey @Gargron quick question, why is Biz Stone on the US non-profit board for Mastodon? He’s clearly still invested in Twitter and Instagram as platforms, posting at both places but only uses Mastodon to syndicate his Medium posts. I’m not seeing any action to indicate any passion or interest in the fediverse whatsoever.

It’s curious, is all.

Balatro: massive if/then block, “bad” code, huge success.

VVVVVV: massive switch statement, “bad” code, huge success.

Hmmmmmmmmmmm I’m starting to wonder if the “bad” code definition is, in fact, bad

samf,
@samf@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@beeoproblem nah I don’t think so.

samf,
@samf@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@beeoproblem yeah but same for “””perfect””” code projects that never ship thanks to premature optimization and bike shedding over paradigms. 🙃

Today I got my first community violation on TikTok. It was a video about Timothy McVeigh and the Oklahoma City Bombing that went on for minutes but failed to mention that McVeigh was a far right Republican white supremacist. That seemed like a pretty stark omission to me, so I left the fact as a comment. First, I was flooded by hateful responses. Then TikTok deleted the comment and issued me a “strike.” I appealed and was denied. I doubt a human ever reviewed it.

samf,
@samf@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@fraying I’m just now watching an HBO doc about the bombing, and 10 minutes in they’re already covering the Nazi / extreme right connections. Ignoring the connection is blatantly ignorant. It’s not subtle, and it’s not in dispute. I’m sorry (but not surprised) to hear about your experience.

If you search Mastodon for “threads.net” you’ll see a bunch of people wondering why they can’t see President Biden’s account, unaware that they are on an instance that did a full suspend on the threads.net domain.

samf,
@samf@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@jsit Mastodon has had literal years to iron out these incredibly awkward UX rough edges. And there are a lot of them. It’s very frustrating.

samf,
@samf@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@jsit I’m sympathetic to open-source development (xz shined a light on that plight, if nothing else), but honestly my goodwill is wearing thin.

I wish Mastodon would stop building apps and focus purely on the protocol. As of their 2022 report, HALF their team was focused on app development. At least when Twitter invested in apps, it was for a business reason. (Ads.)

samf,
@samf@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@tomw @jsit Okay? Conversations evolve sometimes, and my point was that Mastodon has plenty of frustrating UX concerns, beyond per-instance blocking and the UX surrounding it. But thanks anyway for jumping in to make sure a conversation that you're not a part of stays strictly on topic.

Lerping is the foundation is game development and I strongly believe every data type in a game engine should be lerp'able with easing curves.

ok everyone! creative writing exercise time! please carefully consider this totally hypothetical scenario:

What text would you put on one of those ironic black tshirts with white text to make it ok to wear to an allegedly lowkey memorial service?

my wife vetoed my "this is my mourning shirt" idea

taylormccue, (edited ) to random

I'm making a game and I'd like what advice for resolution is best.

Please help as my last game was in 144p.

samf,
@samf@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@taylormccue Voted other to say: I'm currently struggling with this, and I keep ending up back at 16:9 and ideally an integer factor of 1080p. If you're doing any sort of pixel art, it's most likely to look best on most displays. 720p might be the sweet spot. TVs, Switch, most monitors will handle 16:9 well. Even for outliers like Steam Deck (16:10) you could just letterbox.

My games are usually chonky pixels, so I'm at like 640x360 (1/3 of 1080p) for crisp scaling almost everywhere.

samf,

@taylormccue Fully agree! The only opportunities I can think of are, like, GTA-style "what if white dudes got to shoot anyone they wanted" kinda bullshit. Would absolutely love to see something more complex and nuanced in games
