@taylormccue harsh but fair

samf,

@taylormccue Fully agree! The only opportunities I can think of are, like, GTA-style "what if white dudes got to shoot anyone they wanted" kinda bullshit. Would absolutely love to see something more complex and nuanced in games

We are closer to shipping Ivory v1.9! The big feature for this release is the ability to quote posts. If you'd like to test it out, jump back on the TestFlight version of Ivory. We've opened up some more TestFlight beta slots here as well:

https://testflight.apple.com/join/AOOy02ZU

Important Note!
The TestFlight version of Ivory doesn't use your active App Store subscription. You have to subscribe again in TestFlight. You do not get charged real money in TestFlight. It's for testing purposes only.

samf,
@samf@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@ivory Will users be notified when a post of theirs is “quote posted”? Not specifically by Ivory, just similar to other Mastodon activity. I'm not 100% clear on how this all works under the hood, curious whether a link inside a post triggers any kind of pingback-sort-of-thing.

to the new game.

I feel like my brain is melting.

Unfortunately all of this means I'm probably not going to make it to steam next fest which makes me really sad but tripping and falling on the path to making games is normal.

@taylormccue I am literally right now in the tripping-and-falling phase of a game. Hang in there!

The absolute state of some gaming news sites.

Article title: "New Alan Wake II Update Is For All You Babies Out There"

The new game option: “Added option to choose between Low and Normal horror flash visual and audio intensity.”

Ah yes, people with photo-sensitivity issues should just tell their body it's being a baby. Right. Gotcha.

samf,
@samf@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@gamingonlinux Did you read the article? The author is definitely doing a bit. “And sure, yeah, I maybe had to take a break or two when things got too scary and intense. But I’m not a weenie. Not at all. But maybe I’ll check out this new setting when I go back to play … Just to like, you know…check it out. Not because I’m scared or anything. Not at all. Quit asking.”

    I updated my game developer website today.

    Can anyone tell me if it still works or if you notice any glaring errors?

    https://taylormccue.neocities.org/

    samf,
    @samf@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

    @taylormccue Safari for macOS here - lookin mostly good! Only concern: the labelmaker font is a bit hard to read, looks like it's having a faux-bold styling applied by .passage a:

    samf,
    @samf@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

    @taylormccue Oh, the font itself is a'ok! It's just that there's a CSS rule applying a heavier font weight (bold/600) than the font itself supports (probably only 500), so the browser is attempting to fake it. If I remove the font-weight: bold rule in the Web Inspector, it's very readable!

    samf,
    @samf@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

    @taylormccue Close, the font size is OK but the font weight is too heavy. In your CSS/styling (not exactly sure how Neocities handles it), look for the .passage a block. That rule is applying styles to any <a> links inside an element with the class "passage”. Remove the font-weight: bold line and it should resolve the issue!

    samf,
    @samf@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

    @taylormccue Yeah! Looks perfect, no readability issues at all now. 😎👍🏼

    samf,
    @samf@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

    @taylormccue Happy to be of assistance! I've been doing web stuff for like 20 years, and I still end up with bugs like that. It's the sort of problem that’s really tricky to nail down unless one has already dealt with it before.

    On my Godot/Editor iPad prototype:

    I am running into too many rough edges, the need for bandaids is too large, and I think people would hate using it in practice.

    Rather than bridging with a universe of hacks the Godot UI with iOS, I am thinking: rewrite the shell entirely in SwiftUI and call into the editor core

    samf,
    @samf@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

    @Migueldeicaza Are you running into problems with using the Editor itself, or are the issues more about building/running games? (Or both?) Personally, I’d love to be able to use the editor for lightweight foolin' around, even if I couldn't actually build or test a game on the iPad itself. (Though some sort of source control would need to be part of that, either git or iCloud… 🤔)

    samf,
    @samf@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

    @Migueldeicaza Ah, bummer! Thanks for the updates along the way, your effort is very appreciated whether or not you're able to make it work! 🫡

    Godot Editor on iPad.

    It works, but it has tons of rough edges, not really usable in its current state.

    Should I Swiftify the shit out of it and put it in the AppStore?

    Today is the first day since like the middle of August where I feel I’m actually back in my routine, which still includes some adventure and new challenges, but is basically everything to me as an AuDHD creative.

    I am praying that the universe leaves me alone for at least a couple months to be healthy and functional and get some of my work done. 🙏 No more isolating crises, just productive feedback loops– jinx, knock wood, no whammy, etc.

    I'm so used to having ProBuilder for making stuff like pipes etc, so I have to rethink how I do that stuff in Godot, especially since Trenchbroom doesn't have smoothing groups to my knowledge. Gonna have to try my hand at making modular assets, which I've had very little experience with up to this point.

    samf,
    @samf@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

    @glassbottommeg @duskdev I hadn’t heard of Cyclops yet, this looks VERY cool. I couldn’t ever make Trenchbroom work with my brain, glad to hear there are other options!

    It is getting increasingly awkward that my only daily drivers are a Win10 machine and a laptop based on antiquated MacOS. I should get a simple Linux laptop.

    Last time I tried to do this though it turned out any laptops that run Linux with full hardware support out of the box are pretty expensive.

    samf,
    @samf@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

    @mcc the existence of a Thinkpad and Thinkbook and PowerBook implies a Powerpad 🧐
