Synplant 2 is out! It's an amazing VST synthesizer where you can genetically evolve sounds.

It has a feature that lets you generate an analog synth patch from a recording of a sound then manipulate it, and the approximation is super impressive. Probably the best (only?) one ever made.

Moog’s new owner, inMusic, just laid off most of the Asheville team. Fucking hell.

[edit] this post has gone mildly viral so I’m going to update to note that the entire situation here is, in large part, Donald Trump’s fault. His tariffs on synth components shipped from China (chips, etc), but not whole synths assembled there, uniquely harmed US-based assembly like Moog was doing. Fuck inMusic, and as always, fuck Trump. https://www.synthtopia.com/content/2023/09/22/moog-music-downsizing-continues-with-layoffs-in-asheville/

"Notably, the briefs include pro-merger statements from five indie publishers and studios (collectively referred to as 'amici' in the filing) including Curve Digital, Finji, Studio Wildcard, iam8bit, and Strange Scaffold that suggest the deal will have a positive impact on the development community."

man, fucking gross seeing indie devs being pro-industry consolidation

samf,
@samf@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@damianogerli @MichaelKlamerus I stumbled on that too. "amici” (friends) is the pural of "amicus" (friend), as in "amicus brief” aka amicus curiae aka "friend of the court”

@glassbottommeg@peoplemaking.games avatar

Huh, so Unity has reached the killing-the-golden-goose point of their enshittification: https://www.gamedeveloper.com/business/unity-to-start-charging-fee-pegged-to-game-installs

20c per install doesn't sound like much to PC users, but that's potentially enough to nuke mobile gaming entirely. Which they know, because they also run the stats system mobile devs use to calculate ARPU/ARPPU.

Unreal taking a small cut of revenue works fine. That's based on you know, money you made.

Unity charging based on "Installs" might actually cost you money in mobile space. Or if you do a PS+ freebie. Or GamePass. Or especially an EpicStore freebie. They know what they're doing, and it's fucking evil.

EDIT: looks like it's a one time fee per install, the "monthly" is just poorly explained, as confirmed in a forums reply from a random employee, naturally

samf,
@samf@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@glassbottommeg I don't care enough about Unity to dive too deep into this obtuse new approach, but 20 cents per install for a $0.99 not-F2P game is like…the entire profit margin.

If you tell me you're from Michigan I assumet that at some point you have shot a deer.

samf,
@samf@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@seandick This is fair. When I was in school, the first day of hunting season was an informal holiday. (I, personally, I have not shot a deer nor ever gone hunting, but I may be the exception that proves the rule.)

Didn't get very much done yesterday. Spent a lot of time thinking about theme. There are so many survivor, post-apocalyptic, horrible evil as taken over the world games and I want to making something that has the fun combat I loved in Diablo II, but takes place in a fun colorful happy world. It feels like I'm slowly getting there.

samf,
@samf@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@grumpygamer I've played a ton of Diablo 3 and have been getting into 4, and the biggest letdown from 4 is that they took away all the weird fun non-depressing stuff from 3. Everything is so serious and gloomy and sad. More color and silliness in ARPGs!

grumpygamer, to gamedev
@grumpygamer@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

Another day another dollar*.

Spent the weekend doing a deep dive into how Diablo II does weapons and loot. Fascinating but it seems overly complex. It feels good to play so maybe it needs to be. I'm doing a much simpler version but there are some neat things I learned.

  • Except for the dollar part.

samf,

@grumpygamer I have the dumbest question: how did you get CotEditor to have more padding? Mine is INCREDIBLY snug and I can't manage to figure out how to change that.

free idea:

long con game jam. you have 100 years to make a game

samf,
@samf@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@aeva I know this wasn't your intent, but this actually gives me a maybe-good idea: revisit a game jam from 1X years ago, play through games without looking at the contemporaneous results/scores. How would we, today, receive games from Ludum Dare 20 in 2011, for example? Might be an interesting exercise! /cc @mike

The fact that is not already obviously debunked is VERY PROMISING. It doesn't require any fantastical elements. The barrier to entry for reproduction is, relatively, quite low. The steps from the original paper are wonky, but multiple labs in multiple countries are claiming partial success already—which is par for course with a novel material.

If this were a nothingburger, with so many eyes on the problem, we'd be seeing multiple hard failures. And…we're not. 👀 👀 👀

@samf@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

Hey folks: I'm thinking about dipping my toe into tutorials (video or otherwise). What would you like to learn more about?

How specific nodes work? (“Deep-dive into AnimationPlayer”)
Solving general gamedev problems with Godot? (“Creating a Signal Bus in Godot”)
Something else? ("8-bit sound fx generator comparison”)
etc etc etc

samf,
@samf@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

I've noticed that a lot of the tutorials out there are specific to v3, so maybe a "what's new in v4" rundown with comparisons?

I've just learned a ton since starting with Godot and I don't know what’s new to me, or is something that many folks struggle with that I might know how to assist with. 🤷🏻

samf,
@samf@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@KaizarNike Oh interesting. In my experience, nearly everything else is improved! Beyond shaders, I’d say it’s a definite yes. But I’ll think on this. 🤔

No to share (yet...) but I do have a fun (?) tip o' the day:

If you're using a TileMap, and there's even the slightest chance you might want to animate one of the tiles at some point in the future ever, make sure to prep the tiles in your sprite sheet vertically. Unique tiles top to bottom, frames left to right. The out-of-the-box tile animation functionality only allows for a columnar layout. Which I discovered the hard way. 🙃

samf,
@samf@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

Well, I put my money where my mouth is. Let's make TileSet animations easier to use!
