I buy bulk shower gel, in 5L containers and have used the same 1L gel pump for 3 years so far. Much less waste.

Tandem.

BitWarden is the client. VaultWarden is the server-side, self-hosted component that emulates the official BitWarden cloud service.

“Passkeys” is just a marketing term for Webauthn.

Any open source wrapper for Facebook Messenger?

I hate Facebook but realized I can’t uninstall the bloatware Messenger app from my phone since I actually need it for Facebook Marketplace (I usually use it for selling second-hand stuff and looking for other products/services). Also I have plenty of friends there and it might be good to reconnect with some without dealing...

Matrix with some bridges?

I use WhatsApp through it without using the official WA app.

scott,
@scott@lem.free.as avatar

I have a WA client app running in an Android Emulator that runs for 10 minutes once a week.

It’s only needed because WhatsApp wants you to use an official client, otherwise they invalidate any attached sessions.

It’s not needed for any actual technical reason.

Beeper is indeed Matrix with a WA bridge.

scott,

Yep. That’s what this scenario solves.

There are already guides written by the authors of the bridges.

Entirely Automated AI-Powered Balanced News Site

For the last few months our team has been working on an entirely automated AI-powered news site. I am excited to announce that v1.0 is finally being released. This version includes full coverage with every article generated from 2 left leaning, 2 right leaning, and 2 neutral sources. We have also added an anonymous commenting system for people to share their opinions freely. Our servers are now running 24/7 so that new articles appear as they happen! Let me know what you guys think, as well as any comments/concerns/questions you have!

Here's the link: https://www.neuraltimes.org/

It seems very US-centric. Is that by design or due to the sources used?

scott,
@scott@lem.free.as avatar

Nope.

It comes from the French ‘oncle’, from the Latin ‘avunculus’.

Matrix. With its bridges you can “wire-in” networks like WhatsApp, Slack, Signal, Telegram, Discord, iMessage, SMS, e-mail, … and have a single app that interacts with them all. You can have a single group chat with users from all those networks participating and no one would be any the wiser.

scott,
@scott@lem.free.as avatar

This is true but if you’re self-hosting it’s not that much bother to add additional copies of a bridge for other users (granted, it’s not ideal).

Selfhosting Location History

Hello, I’m looking for a good tool to selfhost some kind of location history similar to Google’s one. To have some data I can test the tools with, I merged every of my bicylce and hiking tours to one GPX file containing 7000km worth of travel. Then I tried this tool, but it really lags with so much data and every move and...

I’m using PhoneTrack with NextCloud for 24x7 tracking just like Google History.

You just start an activity and just leave it going. It syncs to NextCloud “live”.

Battery drain is minimal (much like, say, WireGuard VPN).

scott,
@scott@lem.free.as avatar

That’s a good question. Mine’s been running for about 5 months continuously and, as far as I can tell, it’s not storing anything locally. You can export the data as a GPX file at any time.

I’m pretty sure it just syncs with NextCloud and the data is stored there.

The app info says it’s taking around 35MB of data (not including the app size itself) and I performed an export to GPX and it looks like it exported at least a month’s worth of data, if not more… and it was ~436KB.

I’m running PhoneTrack which has a Nextcloud component. The data can be imported into HomeAssistant and also Prometheus.

scott,
@scott@lem.free.as avatar

By import I mean “automatic sync”, yes.

I just use it to “track” myself. You can use it for geofencing, yes. You just attach it to your user and it adds your location to you.

The main reason I use it over the Home Assistant app’s built-in sensors is that PhoneTrack is able to store your location data if you’re offline (out of cell network range, etc.) whereas the HA app just discards it.

Setup Matrix and add a bridge for Discord.

scott,
@scott@lem.free.as avatar

Install powertop. It will allow you to tune the power consumption.

scott,
@scott@lem.free.as avatar

Take a look at this page for someone explaining how they moved from using Discord directly to using it via Matrix.

scott,
@scott@lem.free.as avatar

It’s been rock solid for over three years for me.

One of the "powers" of OSS is that the license usually required changes to be fed back upstream.

If Meta were not to do that the authors of Lemmy could ask someone like EFF to take legal proceeding against them.
