dxcz,

Can confirm that bootleg printer ink is a thing. It used to be all I used. While sites dedicated to it off Amazon doesn’t cut it.

But as someone else pointed out, manufacturers have been adding “DRM” to cartridges in more recent years. Even in older printers, I will get complaints doubting the authenticity of the cartridges I was putting in.

dxcz,

Please forgive the multiple posts. My UI is glitchy af and reports errors when there were none.

dxcz,

Oof. The palpably awkward moments I’ve created cause so much cringe in hindsight. Adrenaline (?) is a helluva drug.

dxcz,

IMO, these are the kinds of moves that’ll catalyze a new piracy movement in the mainstream.

dxcz,

I’ve considered that this might be a helpful tactic for NSFW communities — leave the moderation on Reddit and just bring content over here 🤷

dxcz,

That’s really my main concern too. Also, I am already on call at my day job, I’d rather not sign up to do that for a passion project too.

One thing I’ve thought of is trying to set up a an instance that mirrors some subreddits via RSS. No comments though, because API access.

dxcz,

kbin looks nice, though this is the first I'm hearing of it 🧐

DAE dislike the term "neurodivergent" as applied to ADHD?

Disclaimer: I have no quarrel with the mods using the term in the creation of this community. I understand why they chose it, as even if they share my disagreement with the term when applied to ADHD, there's not really a better inclusive term. "Mental illness" is really the only other option, and naming a community that would...

dxcz,

the only reason ADHDers struggle is because society is set up wrong, but I don’t think that’s true, at least for me.

I’d say you’re exceptional in that you’re very clear on your least favorite parts of ADHD and recognize that society can’t do much to help.

For me, the H is particularly problematic as an office worker. And even as a uni student, I thought it was insane how many of my classmates were capable of just… spending all day in their rooms. Studying or gaming or whatever. Growing up, I always had eager companions for shaking off the restlessness and it never occurred to me that I was unusual.

My recurring thought was “how are people expected to do this?” Which I think falls in line with the societal blame angle.

Being unable to remember anything, unable to self-start, and hypersensitive to rejection would be massive problems in any world.

But you pointed out some very real issues I have with myself and have my own coping mechanisms for. Going this route, I think the “wired different” interpretation pointed out by others makes the most sense.

Generally, I don’t have an issue with it. “Ill” implies that I’ve ever had a “healthy” state and that I want to get back there. And that’s just not true.

dxcz,

Mm that’s a good counter. I concede!

dxcz,

I'm most excited about the "barely worth mentioning" updates to Safari, Maps, Airpods, and autocorrect lol.

Folks on Mastodon were bashing the "Web Apps" conversation but… I would really prefer to install less glorified-site-wrappers on my stuff, thanks. Like they basically knocked out 2 of the 3 reasons I opted for Edge over Safari:

  • Install sites like Slack, Discord, YoutubeMusic as apps rather than using an electron wrapper
  • Work vs Personal profiles w/ history and extensions
  • Optimized memory usage & Automatic tab "sleeping"

As for Maps: I like Siri's voice, and the "turn left but stay in the second from left lane to do it" has saved me from road rage a number of times. It's nicely integrated to Contacts, so I just say "Navigate to Mom/Sister/SO" early in the drive. But I don't use it because of the absurd amount of data usage the app uses (I'm on a limited prepaid plan). So this is basically all I've been waiting for to drop my GMaps usage down to just "what's good around here?" type usage.

Airpods' adaptive usage seems perfect for the way I think airpods are best used — while walking around. If I'm camping out at a cafe or something, I pull out the full sized headphones. But if I'm walking or running, I bring out the airpods. Usually in transparency mode, toggling it off if things get too loud to hear. Looking forward to trying the new feature.

And autocorrect has been getting worse — significantly so. Whatever it is they do, I hope it works :)

dxcz,

“follow the person not the subject” networks.

Was thinking reflecting yesterday, and this is exactly why I can’t get on board with Twitter, Tumblr, or even really Mastodon. Feels like I’m hunting for personalities rather than interests.

dxcz,

Thanks for this, I think you nailed it.

dxcz, (edited )

That’s fair enough. Have seen the same behavior on tumblr and the like.

I’ve found myself wondering if folks aren’t slapping on innappropriate tags or none at all, losing out on content?

I suppose I also never gave this approach an honest shot. Thinking I’ll try this. Thanks!

dxcz,

Is this a TechnologyConnections reference? haha

dxcz,

I lurked because everything I had to say had already been said, or so it seemed.

Seems like, with less users, that's less likely to happen. Been nice.

dxcz,

Mm. My thinking is that many of those coming are going to, inevitably, compare with their sign up experience with Reddit and other platforms.

This whole “federated” thing is already novel and is going to require a learning curve — which for lots of folks will already bring apprehension. Anything unusual, like a manual review process, could be a turn off.

That, plus the sort of privacy nuts that live on Reddit (“why am I here? What is this, immigration? none of your business”), makes for more and more friction IMO.
