Scientists have figured out why killer whales are smashing up luxury yachts: it’s a new fad among teen orcas. “A combination of free time, curiosity and natural playfulness has led to young orcas adopting this ‘trend’ of boat-bumping.” https://newatlas.com/biology/orcas-killer-whales-boats/

the worst part of genocide is now. but the second worst part is after 20-30 years when sooo many assholes will say to your face "there was no genocide" and netanyahu gets turned into an inoffensive grandpa who gets gushing obituaries in big newspapers. people will try to make you feel like you're exaggerating the horror, this old crazy person, like you didn't SEE IT. like you didn't see the mass graves.

Look, I’m definitely hoping to get a few pumpkins for eating this year, but 80% of why I wanted a pumpkin patch was to eat pumpkin flowers. No regrets, these should fry up beautifully.

Israel strikes Rafah; bombs sheltering refugees in a school; shoots own protesters with horse mounted water cannons.

Between October and the beginning of March, the U.S. approved more than 100 military sales to Israel, but publicly disclosed only two sales.

An undisclosed amount of weapons was also transferred from U.S. military stockpiles already stored in Israel, for which there is no public record or inventory.

We pay for much of this with our taxes, but like most US military spending, we cannot actually look up what it is we ourselves are paying for

“Israel is required to use [US defense aid] to buy U.S.-made weapons. This is a form of corporate welfare not only for the largest weapons manufacturers, like Lockheed Martin, RTX, Boeing, and General Dynamics, which have seen their stock prices skyrocket, but also for companies that are not typically seen as part of the weapons industry, such as Caterpillar, Ford, and Toyota”

fishing boat cruise over to the Baird glacier to hike moraines. wildflowers and arctic terns haven’t arrived yet, so felt a little lonely, but always an amazing place to tromp around. we may have pushed some giant rocks down a big moraine hill 🪨

Two seated figured in front of a big glacier view with water and ice bergs and mountains on the side
Person standing in front of icebergs and a glacier in the background,plants in the foreground which is a glacial moraine

A thing that seems historically demonstrable: this current wave of fascist creep and repression of civil liberties will not last forever

A corresponding historically demonstrable fear: the currently-rising order seems likely to do catastrophic harm to bodies and to communities, and to take a lot (A LOT) of lives between this moment and whenever a widely-shared peace and expanding context of collective well being next takes hold

seachanger,
@seachanger@alaskan.social avatar

@jordinn salient observations, thank you. it’s almost like one of those finger trap toys that squeezes your fingers harder the more you try to pull them apart. the more unstable things get around us, the harder people cling to liberalism as a container, not realizing that the set of idealized social processes that form liberalism must be in many cases wholly discarded in order to address the threats we now face…

seachanger,
@seachanger@alaskan.social avatar

@jordinn For me it’s fun to think beyond borders and the nation state, meritocracies, and private property. but for many it’s stressful to have to consider that the society in which we live has failed, and that most of its pillars that we were raised to take as fact and reality were themselves false or deeply flawed — honestly people need to do more mushrooms lol

While I myself might not agree with everything student protesters choose to do, I find a certain genre of handwringing about their (not centralized/top-down) choices quite tiresome. If only demands could be expressed sufficiently moderately, then they'd really succeed! 🥱

seachanger,
@seachanger@alaskan.social avatar

@inquiline takes me back to the early days of Black Lives Matter when liberals were in my Facebook replies (lol) explaining to me how “Black Lives Matter” just needed to rebrand and not be so inflammatory etc etc — it’s like you realize these movements have no supreme leaders executing branding strategies right. Right?

seachanger,
@seachanger@alaskan.social avatar

@inquiline kinda crazy that it felt so personal at the time but same convos were everywhere (as they are now). I think it was easiest for white dudes to lose their shit about it with other white people & often younger women? like they couldn’t take this line of questioning to Black people (tho I’m sure many did sigh) but I remember being like why is this just a relentless reply to me personally for speaking in solidarity with people organizing their own movements?
