    Hmmm... did anyone ever think about making a sort of local bulletin board system with a small computer/old phone/sbc? The machine provides a wifi hot spot, but when logged on people only have access to a single local website where they can post messages to one another.

    One could even have messages carried between multiple of these systems style. Kind of an alternet.

    @scruss @kyonshi so glad I blundered into this thread. I ran a telegard BBS back in the day and miss that internet-augments-meatspace life. Is there a good internet based bbs toolset?

    I have a or or / question. Is there a way to refer to misattribution of reference to a second-order relationship to the referent?

    Examples:

    In the “Robots of Dawn” series, Lijah Bailey (from a Earth-is-one-giant-city) meets Gladia (from a tee-hee-it’s-not-the-antebellum-South-but-with-robots-not-slaves-or-is-it) planet. Smelling flowers, which are not on his world, he avers:

    “These flowers smell like perfume!”

    Much chuckles for the reader.

    Or, today at W58/Lexington Ave across from the new DKNY ad:

    “Wow that lady looks so much like Kaia Gerber!”

    The lady in question is Cindy Crawford, supermodel, and mother of Kaia Gerber.

    “This song is so pretty. It almost sounds like something the Beatles would have done.”

    Song is Paul McCartney, solo.

    Any ideas?

    @mrcompletely @flockofnazguls I read this whole thread in hopes that I could find what you found so compelling in DM, but 3 reads of the original series and it just feels like a basic sci fi story. Like: yeah, well he cheesed a lot of people off, so they came for him. But he was the Mahdi, so guess how that went.

    @flockofnazguls first, the writing is grandiloquent and buries the lede. In fact I never found it before I lost interest. What is the thesis and when is it made?

    Second, the author’s credibility is strained deeply when they apply the descriptor “famous(ly)” to HURD. More people have nuclear launch clearance than have successfully installed HURD.

    @MylesRyden @flockofnazguls yeah I just did my first bare metal Linux install since osx came out (2001?) and was pretty pleased.

    Did a Debian core only install and built out a “focused developer” build: tmux, vim, some languages, and then Wayland + sway + browser/pdf reader.

    It runs great on old hardware and documentation wasn’t awful. ChatGPT has invested a lot of stuff too so crawling dozens of shitty forums is avoidable too.

    i’m trying to find the first place where dehydrated serialization file (vivified at runtime) + eventing/logic handler file pattern of programming originated. My first exposure was in Objective-C+ which was an obvious child of . Where did NeXT get the idea?

    sgharms,
    @sgharms@techhub.social avatar

    @uliwitness very interesting!

    It sounds like this evolutionary chart starts no earlier than where OOP and classes and enforced signatures (abstract classes or contracts). And your example is enlightening, the “contract” was around GUIDs for controls (as I understand your comment) - clearly less refined than the arc whose beginning I’m trying to pin down.

    A ST image is fascinating but feels more like a VM snapshot. I’m after “draw interfaces and wire to handler callbacks’ root.”

    @pgcd @linguistics Latin is the influential motivator? Winnie ille Pû (Winnie the Pooh) or Alexander Ille (Magnus). The ille seems to be an intensifier and a demonstrative? The implication here is that familiarity (and thus mental “ownership”) can be assumed. That kind of ownership reflected in English as possessive “our” makes sense.
