Ten years ago this week I sold my design studio to Monotype and sold on my little publishing business. It was a previous chapter that I still look back with a mix of regret of selling, with a healthy dose of ‘running an agency is very hard’. An awful lot has happened in those 10 years. I now have teenagers, for example!

Web in 2024 (vs 10 or even 5 years ago):

✅ servers: disks and CPU so much faster; RAM so much cheaper
✅ browsers running on so much more powerful hardware
✅ technologies like CDNs moving delivery so much closer to users
✅ connection speeds—on average—so much faster

❌ page load times and performance hilariously, stupidly, so much worse in almost all cases

Over the past 10 years, I’ve had so many partners and vendors share passwords and keys with me via email that I’ve given up on making them invalidate and re-send using a secure method, if it’s not a credential to anything I/we care about directly (e.g. our own systems vs. theirs).

I can’t be alone in still believing that email is unsuitable for sharing secrets (for lots of reasons), right?

I just noted a hilarious thing about the DMARC system.

I set my DMARC settings to “reject” 100% of unauthenticated emails, and now, I’m receiving all the bounces from my email provider that are rejecting spam emails sent to me that are also purported to be from me!

So, I’m still receiving the spam that spammers intended to send to me (and also appear from me) but got rejected by the system, and the bounce is from an authenticated address.

This is so circular, it makes my head hurt.

@ramsey It probably goes against your nature to use a third-party service for this, but I recommend it. You still own and operate everything (your domain, your DNS records, etc.), but all the reports get sent to an email address provided by the service, so it can consolidate them for you. (I use Dmarcian, which is free for personal use.)

For this week’s , here’s my Typekit (now Adobe Fonts) homepage design from almost exactly 10 years ago. If I remember correctly, this was expanding upon a design @weightshift had made before, and I was just changing the hero area and nav to advertise the then-new desktop font syncing (up until that point, Typekit was purely a web font service). I’ve been thinking a lot about my days at Adobe recently. Good people. Good times.

Patricia Joan Collison, my Mam — 1944–2024. The strongest woman I ever knew, she put me first for fifty years and worked tirelessly to support our family through thick and thin. She encouraged my creativity and always trusted me to follow my path. Funny and sharp until the very end, she died peacefully yesterday morning (we were with her) after ongoing health issues worsened suddenly this year. I still haven’t really taken it in, and think maybe sharing will help with that. Love from me n Geri x
