shuzuko,

How many times has your chronic pain been dismissed as “hysteria”, “anxiety”, “all in your head”, “are you sure it’s not just your period honey”, “maybe if you got pregnant you’d feel better”? How many years did it take for you to receive a diagnosis? How likely is it that your spouse/significant other will just up and leave you while you’re sick because “you’re too much trouble”?

It’s a lot harder to want to live with chronic pain and health conditions when you’re constantly dismissed and ignored and you know that the person who promised to be with you through thick and thin has a 7x higher chance to leave you than if the situation were reversed.

shuzuko, (edited )

Suicidal ideation comes and goes, much like all the rest 🤷🏻‍♀️

I don’t think I said anything about it being ok for one sex to die if the other doesn’t have to suffer, though? Not sure where that came from at all. Just pointing out that your view of “better living and in pain than dead” doesn’t take into account the very different experience of fem-coded chronic disease sufferers. Men are more likely to be believed, more likely to receive quick and accurate diagnosis, more likely to receive appropriate support. Women and other minorities often are disbelieved, told they’re imagining things, expected to suffer in silence, or outright told that they are lying for sympathy/attention/drugs. It’s a lot harder to want to stay alive in spite of the pain when you don’t receive proper support from family, friends, and medical institutions. The goal, obviously, is for everyone to receive the appropriate support. And before anyone jumps down my throat: not all men are lucky enough to have a perfect experience. Not all women and minorities have bad experiences. Yeah, we all know that. But the numbers are there and they speak for themselves.

As to the last point, the other commenter is correct; the divorce rate when the man has a chronic or terminal illness is 3%. In the reverse situation, with the woman being ill, the divorce rate is a whopping 21%. This is what I was referring to. Men are wildly disproportionately more likely to leave a spouse who is suffering from a chronic disease. Again, it’s hard to want to live when the person who was supposed to be with you for better or worse decides you’re too much trouble to deal with, and this is a thing that affects women far more than men. That’s all I meant. I am certainly aware that support needs to go both ways even when one partner is chronically ill and I am lucky enough to have a supportive spouse who has their own (mental) health issues which lends itself to mutual support anyway.

Edit, I’ve just noticed you’re not the person I initially responded to. That said, this is all directly in response to their belief that living with chronic health issues is always preferable to dying, so that that as you will.

shuzuko,

Thanks for being open minded about it. I am passionate about it, as I’ve had several femme/minority friends be much worse off than I and struggle greatly with their conditions, and have lost a few as a result. I’ve also experienced firsthand the disparity in treatment, though I’ve been luckier than many with a comparatively “mild” condition and a robust support system. I don’t disagree that there are problems in the system for every chronic patient, regardless of their sex, gender, race, etc and every loss is sad. I just get frustrated when people are flippant about the reality that many of us face - “well, at least you’re alive” is of no comfort when death may feel like the only chance at peace.

Thanks for the discussion, regardless, and I wish you as many years of happiness and relatively pain-free enjoyment as you are able and wish to find. It’s certainly not a competition out here, we should all be trying to advocate for all of us :)

shuzuko,

Regarding difficulty - on lower difficulties it’ll take longer to earn up the medals (though the major order rewards definitely help there) but I actually think it’s faster to farm super credits on the easiest 3 difficulties.

shuzuko,

This isn’t happening you disingenuous twat

shuzuko,

You are falling for conservative lies. You are regurgitating them to the detriment of those around you. Stop it. You are being either exceedingly ignorant or willfully harmful.

To spell out the reality of the situation: The North Carolina institutions are not providing surgeries or hormone therapy to prepubescent children, nor is this standard practice in any part of the country.

factcheck.org/…/scicheck-young-children-do-not-re…

At most, prepubescent children transition socially and may receive puberty blockers to ease or prevent serious psychological distress associated with dysphoria, after thorough questioning and therapy. No doctor would ever give a 6 year old AFAB child testosterone, nor estrogen to AMAB. Nor are children being given puberty blockers willy-nilly. It is so fucksake difficult for even adults to be approved for gender diverse care, and you’re out here trying to claim that children are being indoctrinated to think they’re trans and given hormones for, what, fucking fun? Like, holy shit, that’s absolutely unhinged and I cannot possibly believe you are acting in good faith in spreading this complete pile of shit.

shuzuko,

Definitely did. Dad was a stoner, I was too young to get stoned, we both sat and watched it for ages while dad shared his favorite tunes with me. Ah, good times.

shuzuko,

Fascists have no culture of their own except violence, they have to steal everyone else’s.

shuzuko,

I’ll grant you that the article is kind of shite, but as someone who is stuck in a house I’d rather be rid of, it resonated with me. I don’t like my house.

We were first time buyers and ended up with a bit of a lemon, which we’ve put a lot of work into but it doesn’t make it a house we love. We’ve been there for 7 years, we tried to move once and COVID fucked it up, and now we’re stuck in a city suburb neither of us really want to live in anymore, in a house that we’re sick of, with neighbors who are growing increasingly conservative that we would rather see the back of. Despite the fact that we’ve technically got over 100k equity on our house now thanks to value inflation we can’t afford a move because even with a 100k down payment any house we actually want is now 450k+ and our monthly payments with a 7-8% mortgage rate would be 3x what our current payment is.

So like, yay, we have a house and at least that’s good, and we’re secure because our payments are low! But also, I want to fucking leave this place, I hate it, I hate my neighbors, I hate this state, and yeah, we’re fucking stuck because even with all our newfound equity we’re still poor af according to the rules of the game and it fucking sucks.

shuzuko,

Everything from the waist down just clenched up in horror, thanks

shuzuko,

That’s a different song, though equally inaccurate as it was by the Presidents of the United States of America who did, in fact, “make it”.

What's a common occurrence in your hobby that you think shouldn't be?

For me it’s driving while under the influence. If you couldn’t tell, I like me some ganja. However I have long since held the belief that it is utterly insane to drive while under the influence of most substances, with maybe nicotine and caffeine being the exception. All too often I see other stoners smoking and driving,...

shuzuko,

I am just, constantly in awe of how toxic the fiber arts community can be

Like friends

We are making lovely comfort items, random decor, stuffies and just like, silly shit WHY ARE YOU SCREECHING AT ONE ANOTHER

Hence me going to exactly 1 stitch n bitch ever and then quietly doing crochet in my house forever more

shuzuko,

Ah, everyone’s favorite game: is this person playing Krieg IG because they like the aesthetic, or because they "like the aesthetic"?

shuzuko,

Not a fire performer, but an aerialist - I love circus arts but some people just should not do it. Not because they suck, or they’ve got the “wrong body” or whatever other bs, but just because they completely eschew anything safety related.

The number of people who assume they can just pop a hookup in their drywall ceiling, maybe checking for a joist first, and then hang a lyra from it and try to do drops or high speed spins on it is staggering. Or, like, hanging silks from a random tree branch. Or doing anything more than 3-4 feet in the air without a crash mat under them. Or trying to teach themselves from fucking tiktok videos. Please, please just stop. You’re going to hurt yourself, and in the process you’re also going to make everyone else’s insurance rates skyrocket. Hate it so much.

shuzuko,

Aerial arts! I started taking lyra classes about two years ago and aerials have become my main AuDHD special interest. I spend probably a quarter of my day doing, watching or thinking about it and am perfectly happy to talk it up to anyone and everyone in an attempt to get them doing it too. Spinning and/or being upside down has become my happy place :)

shuzuko,

Oh, interesting! I may have to give the series a shot, then - I pretty much hate-read the books, hoping at first that he would get better and then later hoping that someone would just fucking kill him lol

shuzuko,

My mom was into True Blood for a little bit when it first came out, probably because she was trying to fill a Buffy-shaped hole in her entertainment and TB was close enough, lol. She bought me the first novel for Christmas one year and I very quickly donated it, it was so fucking bad. She asked me if she could borrow it, got mad when I told her I’d donated it already, and then sad when I told her it would ruin her enjoyment of the show by being complete and utter trash xD

shuzuko,

Depends entirely on the tea, but, if black: at home it’s usually hot, with a half to a full teaspoon of raw sugar and a splash of milk. At work it’s usually just hot and straight, no sugar or milk. If green: hot, sometimes honey and lemon, usually just straight. If herbal: hot or chilled depending on the temp outside, no sugar if hot, a bit of sugar if chilled.

I drink a lot of fuckin tea.

shuzuko,

Just a humble midwestern tea snob 😆

shuzuko,

Weed card, it’s what I need! Hardly ever - okay, always. But it’s not an addiction, cause myyyy doctor gave meeeee, a prescription!

-Weed Card, Garfunkel and Oates

shuzuko,

Mom & Pop is a(n American?) colloquialism referring to small, frequently family-owned-and-operated businesses. They may not be as likely to use shady ‘I can’t believe it’s not slave labor’ practices, but they frequently have other, very glaring issues such as shitty pay, treating you like an outsider if you’re not family, and covering up the bad behavior of anyone who is.

shuzuko,

Strawberries, raspberries and boysenberries are not berries. They’re accessory fruit. Very berries and power berries don’t seem to be a thing, unless you’re translating them from another language incorrectly into English. You listed exactly one berry, the blueberry, proving their point that most people actually don’t know much about their food. “Colloquial use” has nothing to do with people knowing actual facts about their food, which was the matter under discussion. Further, (anecdotally because I’m at work and can’t be arsed to look it up at the moment though the studies have been done) a lot of people have no idea what kind of plant many of these things even grow on, whether tree, bush, vine, etc. They know it’s a plant. That’s about it. Ignorance about food is at an all time high and modern western society - or at least American society - is highly divorced from the act of food production.

Here’s a short list of things that are actually berries: bananas, watermelon, cucumbers, pumpkins, tomatoes, peppers, grapes, oranges and kiwis. Aside from accessory fruits which are not berries, there are also drupes - stone fruit such as cherries, plums, avocados, etc, which are sometimes lumped under the umbrella of berries and sometimes considered distinct.

shuzuko,

Opposite - one of the girls got swapped into the professor’s body and couldn’t use his hands because she didn’t know how fingers worked.
