Happy end of AAPI month to everyone except people still think Pacific Islanders practice cannibalism (or have in the last century).

Anyways, just a reminder that war and pandemics are NOT natural occurrences.

Well this pissed me off. I watched this documentary about the forgotten Niuean soldiers who fought in WWI on behalf on New Zealand.

Many of them died of European diseases before they could even make it to the western front. The ones that did make it were accessories to white soldiers in the war. Their main duty was to dig trenches for them. https://youtu.be/9dNEkJsNmiA?feature=shared

@kevbob i think, like many impressionable young people during that time, they went under false pretenses but once they were shipped far away from home, they couldn’t go back.

sipi,
@sipi@union.place avatar

@kevbob very few made it back to niue honestly

sipi,

@kevbob true! i loved how they portrayed a guy hiding in the bushes for that scene lol

The tsunami warning in Tonga is cancelled which is a good sign.

I hate to say how common these sorts of things are. I helped my family rebuild their old house so that the new one is elevated off of the ground so that the floods don’t cause anymore damage to the house.

I’m just sitting on a bench in SF Chinatown telling various tourists in different languages (English, Mandarin, Teochew, Thai, Indonesian mostly) that the bakery they’re looking at has really good bread and they should definitely try it. Yummy Bakery should pay me to be their ad or something

I’d like to practice my Cantonese but all the Cantonese speakers here know what’s good already

@skinnylatte this would be a good side hustle lol

I always find it fascinating how crowds differ by artist.

The crowd here at #Bottlerock for Pearl Jam is excellent: sociable, enthusiastic, generous, self-aware, and having a damn good time.

sipi,

@josh butthole surfers had the worst crowd for me. i saw them around 08 and i felt like i was around a bunch of gen x’ers who didn’t want young people listening to their beloved band

Remembering that intense Barney doc where someone accused him of hiding drugs in his tail.

People whose UX work revolves around studying children is really weird to me. Like, I get it. There's a market for children's things.

But things like consent can get really tricky. I'd argue that children can't fully consent to research because they can't fully understand how their data is being used.

sipi,
@sipi@union.place avatar

When I used to do academic research, getting IRB approval to engage with kids was rigorous.

User research tends to not be as rigorous. I've noticed that things like "consent" especially around vulnerable populations is more nuanced.

sipi,
@sipi@union.place avatar

Also, allowing children to opt out is really important. What if they don't want their data being used anymore? Do they need their parent's permission?

This becomes problematic when their parents are the ones who benefit from getting financial compensation for these studies.

Children truly don't own their data.

sipi,
@sipi@union.place avatar

And I know "kids" is a wide range of ages (0-17). Teenagers are different because you can explain these concepts to them.

Kids under 10 however, it becomes very difficult.

sipi,
@sipi@union.place avatar

Anyways, user researchers should be trained in research ethics. I did this training a while back and it was one of the best things I could do for my career.

Learning about the long history of abuse researchers have done to marginalized people really shows you how clear the power dynamic is between "researcher" and "participant/subject".

I should’ve done this years ago, but im finally going to be switching my OS to Linux. I’ve put up with Microsoft’s BS longer than I should’ve. I’m truly over it.

I’m a total noob, but I’m following this guide that breaks it down for me. Hopefully this helps others who are making this transition for the first time as well. https://www.pcmag.com/how-to/how-to-make-the-switch-from-windows-to-linux

It's really cool to see people talking about New Caledonia on here.

I know I harp on PI representation a lot, but the erasure of Black Pacific Islanders (which indigenous Kanaks are) are marginalized even within our own community.

sipi,
@sipi@union.place avatar

I won't take up too much space, so here's an article with voices from Black Pacific Islanders who talk about anti-blackness in our own communities. https://www.allure.com/story/melanesian-women-on-colorism
