@MishaVanMollusq @melissabeartrix I seem to recall spending most of primary school being a bit baffled by how the other boys played. Really don't remember what the girls did. With the small circle of friends I did have, we used to play complex make-believe games. Sportsball games held no interest.

In my re-read, I finished Thud the other day. Okay, well, more like a week ago.

Not a big fan of this novel. Terry has clearly moved on from spoofing to serious drama but in a world where technological progress is both rapid and has a persistent kind of we-don't-call-it-magic magic that drives things. Thus the imps in cameras and Vimes' personal organiser and creatures like golems and vampires.

Koom Valley could've remained a Noodle Incident and I'm sure a lot of Discworld fans would've accepted that. That was probably my disappointment with the novel the first time I read it. This time, though, I'm not so sure. Having it all sorted out because of Vimes is actually pretty much in character for Sir Samuel. The novel lampshades this a couple of different ways. People who know of Sam know he's like this. Some of them even figure out how to manipulate him, too. which is something Sam is very aware happens.

It's been said elsewhere that all the dwarf tunnels under Ankh-Morpork were partly a setup for creating an underground rail system in the city. We see a hint of that possibility in Unseen Academicals with mentions of public transport. But a subway system did not eventuate in a novel before Terry passed away.

I'm probably going to slow down once more now that I'm on the home stretch. Most of the novels in this last tranche I have only read once, mostly because of how recent they are plus that I'm no longer a prolific reader and haven't been for at least a decade. And I have other things to read, too.

So good when you buy a new piece of gear and it turns out well. Our 20-year-old Sony amp died, so we had to rely on the TV's own speakers for a while (not ideal, fairly flat sound). Then I bought a new Denon amp and the results are excellent; love that deep crisp sound (particularly good when watching Doctor Who. :)). And it has things the old one didn't have, eg Bluetooth connection to our devices.

static,
@static@aus.social avatar

@Bern @timrichards There are so many people who don't know what good sound reproduction sounds like. I've had friends who had awful speakers on their TV and they didn't care (or didn't care enough) to address it. Witness, too, how many cheap headphones there are and obviously sell. Same with cheap and nasty Bluetooth speakers.

In the music production world, this is such a problem that there are plugins specifically for emulating bad speakers for adjusting the mastering.

I wish we could teach all men that "military solutions" only beget more problems. As a species, we seem to like knocking the stuffing out of people we disagree with, especially if they're bigger. Yes, I've been watching the nightly news. But I turned it off. There is too much warfare in this world.

static,
@static@aus.social avatar

@timrichards There are lots of reasons people go to war. But warring on someone requires thinking of them as worthy of your attack. That's dehumanising and doesn't get un-taught.

static,

@melissabeartrix I think I might've been about 14 when it might've occurred to me. I remember a church youth group outing to the movies. All the girls chose one movie and all the boys chose another. Except me - I went in with the girls. I didn't see it as anything odd for years afterward and no one said anything either.

I have about 7½ books and one or two short stories until the end of my re-read (not counting the Science of The Discworld series). Yes, that puts me in the middle of "Thud".

Terry was in a new phase of writing from this point forward where the social concerns took centre stage. And it's kind of around this point that his Alzhiemers' likely started impairing his ability, too.

I'm probably going to be slowing down.

@kiwa I found over the years that TV tuner cards were frequently just this side of crap. And the bundled software is usually worse.

I had a MythTV box for quite some years and went through multiple tuner card. They just die eventually. Engineered too close to the decoder chips' tolerances, I'm guessing.

I had a call just before Christmas, wishing me a merry Christmas from one of the people that rejected me, "if I was just gay" group ... 1993 ... Pre history

I thought it was all strange, and had a few more calls from them ... we caught up with a lot of shit life, family and had a couple of laughs ... It was nice ... I kind of had a inkling there was something else ... Giggles

And today I got a call and asked if I wanted a quick drink ... Well I went ... So i asked what he wanted after all this time

And to get to the meat of the conversation ... His grandson found out how I was treated and told his grandfather he should apologise to me ... hey I am flooded in their photo albums ... And his mother would tell these stories all about me ... Blush

I was the crazy aunty that all the kids would come too and I would take them all out on outing ... I had fun and it seems his mother did to

And I said why did you grandson want you to do this ... "He used to be me granddaughter" ... I sat there stunned and glad I had a joint before ... Then I giggled a lot ... And just smiled

I was speechless ... We chatted a bit more with me occasionally asking "seriously" ....he knoded or said yes ... And I giggled ... Giggles ... I could help it ... Giggles

I ask him to give my phone number to his grandson if he wants a chat and to his daughter too ... I need a Valium or four ... Blush
