Taking a little break from digging out the footing for a cinder block retaining wall we’re building. Yeah, I know, my fire pit looks absolutely pathetic. Once some of these other projects are completed I can clean this mess up and get back to building the retaining wall behind the fire pit. 🫠

@fahrni That’s actually pretty cool. Where did you get that sheet metal flashing?

@fahrni Yes sir!

The whole EU crackdown angle of “WE can dictate how you make YOUR product”, essentially treating big tech as a public good, upsets me. Apple (and other big tech) built this from scratch with billions of dollars. This is reeaally hard. And suddenly someone walks in and says “here’s how you’re going to change it and we’ll fine you to smithereens if you don’t.”

I agree with creating laws to steer big tech in the right direction. But this is way too heavy-handed and uncooperative.

I miss those UIs with texture and personality and actual buttons that you knew were buttons just by looking at them. I think the idea that people don’t need those hints today because “they know how phone apps works by now” is misguided. https://hachyderm.io/@samhenrigold/112147894223191066

Had quite a shock when I saw this white pixel. Luckily, it's part of the window, not a bad hardware pixel.

steveroy,
@steveroy@mstdn.ca avatar

@uliwitness I miss that native UI. The web UIs that comes with most routers are so bad compared to this.

steveroy, to random
@steveroy@mstdn.ca avatar

A few months ago the MoCA setting on my router started disabling itself upon restarting. Now whenever the router has to restart for any reason, it comes back on with MoCA disabled and 2/3 of the house is out of WiFi.

Two different people at my ISP said it must be a faulty router. They swapped it for a new one. I just tested it. Same problem.

When tech stops working. 😠

steveroy,
@steveroy@mstdn.ca avatar

A third person at my ISP just told me it’s normal because MoCA is not a standard configuration. That makes no sense to me. It may not be standard, but any config you make on your equipment should stay the same after you restart. Otherwise can you imagine the mess?

I’m just going to ignore what that third person said and try to get it from the horses mouth, the modem manufacturer. My money is on the firmware.

This has got to be the most vague legal definition I’ve ever read:

“any natural person, or any legal person irrespective of whether privately or publicly owned, who is acting, including through any person acting in his or her name or on his or her behalf, for purposes relating to his or her trade, business, craft or profession”

😳

steveroy,
@steveroy@mstdn.ca avatar

Removing the fluff, it comes down to:

“any natural/legal person who is acting for purposes relating to their trade, business, craft or profession”

Well, yes. Isn’t that every working human on the planet?

Watching the Boston vs Toronto game. Something that amazes me since the beginning of the season is the players conditioning. It’s pedal to the floor going down the ice, pedal to the floor going back to defend, pedal to the floor rushing to the bench for a change. They never look out of gas. Amazing.

The US is running ads on TV in Canada to come visit. I’ve never seen that in my life. Can’t help but wonder if fewer Canadians vacation in the US with all the craziness there.

I always thought that ads were one of the worse things to plague modern life. But I've changed my mind. In the year 2024, no one can seemingly conduct business of any kind without requesting reviews.

Ad blocker? Checked.

Review request blocker? 👀

TIL our keyboard caps get shiny because of the type of plastic uses (check top comment).

They aren’t dirty (well, assuming you clean it occasionally). The key surface gets smoothed out over time. https://www.reddit.com/r/mac/s/jcrrEwwACa

I realized tonight that I've forgotten how bad the YouTube experience is on Apple TV since I deleted the app. Because I've been AirPlaying from my phone instead, which has all manner of blockers, so no ads. So much better.

In the TicketMaster app for iOS, when I go to My Account, the Give Us Feedback option does nothing when tapped.

Maybe that's a response in itself.

I’m so tired of technology sometimes.

Exhibit 48217. Ticket Master. I fill out a form to get help. I enter my cell number formatted as xxx-xxx-xxxx. I tap the Submit button. Fails. Form points to the phone field that has my number in it and says “Enter a number”.

I remove the dashes. Tap Submit again. Now it works.

Seriously.

Does anyone here understand how to use Switch Control on macOS? More specifically, can it be used to control an iPad from a Mac? Can the Mac be the switch for the iPad or is a hardware switch actually required?

I’ve tried to set it up but I don’t understand what I’m doing and the articles/docs I see online are like Chinese so I assume I’m missing something.

(I know about the same network and same Apple ID requirements.)

👀 If you've been here for over 20 years, what's your secret? What makes you stick with tech when so many others move on?

steveroy,

@brwngrldev For me it’s been 1) working on products that do good in the world, 2) staying away from assholes, and 3) let’s admit it, coding is insanely fun. 😄
