We decided not to have a Christmas tree this year because it seemed like too much work to manage with our new cat, but today the kids (they’re adults) and I crafted one with coloured paper and stick glue. You wouldn’t believe how happy that made me. It’s the little things. 😄🎄

My daughter noticed today that our cat has a ❤️ on his paw. We’ve had him for 9 years and we had never seen that. 😂

Someone sent an email at my workplace today, impersonating me to change the banking info used for my pay.

I’m amazed that people try stunts like that. But then maybe I shouldn’t be surprised.

If you want me to buy your thing, don’t make it or call it “smart”. The dumber it is, the more likely I’ll be interested.

I moved so a new is in order.

👋🏻 I’m a French Canadian husband and dad living in Toronto. I met my wife on eWorld. I try to be good to the planet and a good human being.

I’m a cat person, a hockey fan, love science, enjoy riding my bike, going for hikes, watching movies, and working with my hands. Eternal Mac guy but I stay up to date with most tech.

Industrial designer by training, software developer by trade. I've been making iOS and Android apps for 12 years and counting!

I puzzle at why RSS fell in popularity while evidently newsletters delivered by email are still very much alive.

For work, it seems like all I hear is "Figma this" and "Figma that". I've tried getting used to Figma and Penpot, but you know, my go-to is still @Sketch.

I hadn't visited their web site in a while and I'm impressed. They're doing a good job telling and showing why Sketch is great. It's still the best in my opinion and am putting this bit out there to do my part talking about it! ✍🏻

If anyone is looking for climate-related work in tech, https://ClimateBase.org is a great resource and job board.

Had quite a shock when I saw this white pixel. Luckily, it's part of the window, not a bad hardware pixel.

@uliwitness I miss that native UI. The web UIs that comes with most routers are so bad compared to this.

Taking a little break from digging out the footing for a cinder block retaining wall we’re building. Yeah, I know, my fire pit looks absolutely pathetic. Once some of these other projects are completed I can clean this mess up and get back to building the retaining wall behind the fire pit. 🫠

A few months ago the MoCA setting on my router started disabling itself upon restarting. Now whenever the router has to restart for any reason, it comes back on with MoCA disabled and 2/3 of the house is out of WiFi.

Two different people at my ISP said it must be a faulty router. They swapped it for a new one. I just tested it. Same problem.

When tech stops working. 😠

steveroy,
@steveroy@mstdn.ca avatar

A third person at my ISP just told me it’s normal because MoCA is not a standard configuration. That makes no sense to me. It may not be standard, but any config you make on your equipment should stay the same after you restart. Otherwise can you imagine the mess?

I’m just going to ignore what that third person said and try to get it from the horses mouth, the modem manufacturer. My money is on the firmware.

I miss those UIs with texture and personality and actual buttons that you knew were buttons just by looking at them. I think the idea that people don’t need those hints today because “they know how phone apps works by now” is misguided. https://hachyderm.io/@samhenrigold/112147894223191066

The whole EU crackdown angle of “WE can dictate how you make YOUR product”, essentially treating big tech as a public good, upsets me. Apple (and other big tech) built this from scratch with billions of dollars. This is reeaally hard. And suddenly someone walks in and says “here’s how you’re going to change it and we’ll fine you to smithereens if you don’t.”

I agree with creating laws to steer big tech in the right direction. But this is way too heavy-handed and uncooperative.
