Windows 11 Start menu ads are now rolling out to everyone (www.theverge.com)

Microsoft is starting to enable ads inside the Start menu on Windows 11 for all users. After testing these briefly with Windows Insiders earlier this month, Microsoft has started to distribute update KB5036980 to Windows 11 users this week, which includes “recommendations” for apps from the Microsoft Store in the Start menu....

the only viable alternative, for 99% of the population, is Apple

This is largely because Windows and MacOS come preinstalled and that’s how the vast majority of people interact with operating systems. If you had to choose your OS, I’m sure there’d be more choice in the market. Not necessarily Linux, but just more choice in general.

I’ve been using some Linux flavor for about 15 years. The biggest thing about switching (at least back then) was I knew how to configure Windows just to my liking. With Linux it was a lot more difficult because I had to google everything. Like “how do I change the wallpaper?” How do I get the login screen to appear on the correct monitor, etc. It was just frustrating because I knew how to do this in Windows, but I felt like a major noob again with Linux.

I’ve known people who are the best workers on their team, but put in like 40% effort. Does that count as quiet quitting? IDK.

To be clear, I’m not excusing the article, which is a bad joke. That being said, there are plenty of people out there that are really good at their jobs, but don’t put in full effort. I don’t have a problem with these people at all (really who does 100% effort all of the time?).

@stinerman@midwest.social avatar

Look at all these people who don’t know you at all trying to offer you help.

Yeah we are all insignificant on a long timeline. Who cares? That’s the ultimate freedom to do what you want with your life.

I’ve been in a mental hospital for depression twice. I understand a bit of where you’re coming from (I’m a straight cis man so I can’t speak to the rest). I’m telling you IT DOES GET BETTER. Hang in there!

My sister is aggressively extroverted, and I am about as introverted. She insists on talking over the phone. All the time. I have to recover from it.

YT Music. For new stuff… IDK. Osmosis? I mostly listen to 80s/90s stations on the radio.

I never wore JNCOs, but I still wear carpenter-style jeans, and I will do so until I die.

Columbus is kind of known for not being known for anything.

I’ve lived here for a little over 15 years and various places in Ohio for every bit of my 40 years. There are things to like about it (low cost of living compared to the rest of the country, 4 seasons of weather) and things to not like about it (really, too many people for me – I’m from a rural area, and local and state government are not great). I like that it’s kind of a generic Midwestern town. Plenty of sports to watch if you like that kind of thing.

I think it’s underrated. People are moving here like crazy, so maybe they agree, but it’s causing rents to get out of control. I feel bad for those moving here. It’s a lot less affordable than when I came in 15 years ago.

World HQ is in Columbus, OH. Represent!

When I was in college in the mid aughts, there was a Taco Bell across the street from campus. Only place I could get full on $3.

What would it take for you to stop using the internet or go minimalist on the usage?

I think for me, the internet would have to be totally eclipsed by the enshittification process, for me to revise how I use it and what for. I’ve been online for 28 years now and I am beginning to slow down more and more as time goes on. I used to have been a community seeker, an explorer and a very curious person....

Being retired and living on my grandma’s farm. I could do that today if I had the money. Just tune out everyone and everything. Watch broadcast TV and get movies from the library.

Tello is pretty good. For your use case it’d be between $14-$19 per phone per month. I use Google Voice so I have a limited minutes plan just in case. Service is OK. Uses T-Mobile towers. I’m also in Ohio (Columbus). It drops out heading into the north-central parts of the state where I’m from.

Yeah like 95% of the time it’s just a bunch of people trying to get about their day. 5% of the time it…isn’t.

Different people have different experiences.

I’m not telling anyone they shouldn’t use the bus. In fact I suggest people use it more. You have time to let your mind wander, and don’t have to pay attention to anything other than to pull the cord before your stop. It’s really relaxing…almost all of the time in my experience.

stinerman,
@stinerman@midwest.social avatar

When riding the bus, just pretend you’re as crazy as everyone else. I am crazy, so I don’t have to pretend. Much.

It all makes sense when you realize that a good number of them feel that Palestinians are not people.

Yes.

“Free speech absolutist” these days means “you should be required to hear what I say” not “you should be able to say anything you want without government interference.”

stinerman,
@stinerman@midwest.social avatar

The amendment process is basically dead because the politicians realized that it’s much easier to just get a majority of the Supreme Court to say what you want it to say.

Can confirm. It’s a one-way integration.

Is the season after the reboot (after season 7) worth watching ?

Do they still have many highly intelligent and over qualified people working on it to make wacky science plots/theories/jokes ? How good is the show nowadys anyway ? Does it still hold that standard ? Been a hot minute since i last watched also i am talking about hulu reboot to avoid future confusion as one person asked me in...

I thought it was, by far, the worst season of Futurama. As @CorrodedCranium mentioned it seemed like they were trying to make up for lost time with a bunch of forced, topical jokes.

It was still a decent show, but I didn’t think it was nearly as good as it has been.

Are you telling me that Clitslasher might not be on the up and up when talking about getting a better massage?
