What the hell, where does the sudden on come from? There even are two additional "sponsored" entries on the bottom of the page, barely more results than ads. Doesn't get caught by µBlock Origin or another addon either.

Time to move to a better search provider. Probably a self-hosted one.

Haven't heard of Goosle. Curious to know what experiences folks have had with it.

Good solution to the anonymisation problem.

It's a bit ranty towards the end, but there's some fascinating insights here into shifting sands of the ZuckerBorg's metrics, FarceBook enshittification, and so on:

Any suggestions on the best place for someone in Aotearoa to get a durable, USB-charged electric arc lighter (plasma lighter)?

https://www.popularmechanics.com/technology/gadgets/a31133313/how-plasma-lighters-work/

I've seen them for sale in a Z station, and hell, I buy vegan pies there. But if there's a more ethical supplier, I'd much rather give them my business and have someone other than Z to send people if they want one too (same with the pies if anyone knows of any good vegan baking retailers in Waikato).

> Z vegan pies are made by The Hub and are available frozen

Good to know, but that's a different product category to buying them warmed and ready to eat.

Having said that, I've seen The Hub pies in some of the greengrocers and other small food shops around town. Most of them have added sugar, so I can't eat them. But the ones I can eat were lovely.

The NZ Official Information Act needs to be reformed so that it applies to anything that is funded by public money.

> so much of the services of the state are done by government funded ‘independent’ organizations

Ae, and one of the reasons for this, is that it allows governments to dodge OIA transparency. Changing the OIA so transparency obligations follow public money wherever it goes would reduce the incentive for that.

strypey,
@strypey@mastodon.nzoss.nz avatar

Parliamentary supremacy being what it is in NZ, a future government that wanted to go back to dodging transparency could just change the OIA back. But that would look pretty shifty. In practice, successive governments have been hesitant to tinker with laws regulating government itself (including the OIA) for petty partisan reasons.

I've been the former, as part of various organisations I've worked with, so I can relate. The devil, as always, is in the details.

@strypey@mastodon.nzoss.nz avatar

The main change I'd make to the OIA is that public entities that pass money to NGOs have to respond to OIA requests about whatever that money is used to fund. As if they were spending it internally. No more responding with; well I'd like to tell you, but that service has been outsourced to an entity not subject to the OIA.

The same carve-outs for stuff like "commercial sensitivity" could apply. Although I suspect that like outsourcing, these are often used as a loophole to dodge transparency. The rules around such exceptions, and when they can be used, probably need to be tightened up too. Based on what's been learned from observing their use since the OIA came into force.

"Where do we go from here?"

It’s time we answer that together. Every great conversation I've had lately has come down to this question.

So: imagine an invite-only, one week community for our sociotechnical future. Async conversation exploring today’s terrain and tomorrow's ambitions, culminating in two hours of talks.

🇺🇦 Biden allows Ukraine to use U.S. weapons for limited strikes inside Russia to defend Kharkiv, marking a significant policy shift after pressure from top aides and allies.

> Biden allows Ukraine to use U.S. weapons for limited strikes inside Russia to defend Kharkiv

Maybe this is explained in the linked source, but what gives the US any power of what Ukraine does with weapons once they've been delivered? Surely supplying weapons under US command blurs the lines between supplying weapons to assist a sovereign state in its self defence (proxy war), and entering the war themselves?
