My toxic trait is thinking that software developers need certification and standards of quality set by a governing body if they want to call themselves engineers the way people who build bridges do. https://www.theverge.com/2024/5/9/24152633/fda-recall-tandem-diabetes-care-insulin-pump-mobile-app

Hiya fedi, I need your knowledge! The family wants to digitise a big collection of old photographs, negatives and photo slides. I know there’s services we can send the material to that do this for a living, but grandpa is afraid to hand them off for fear of them getting damaged, lost etc. So I need to figure out how to do this “in house” as best I can.

I’ve figured out there’s specific photo scanners, instead of a flat bed scanner, that should be able to handle the negatives and the slides.

But what I don’t know is about good software to scan and archive them properly, what things to watch out for when doing this and what kind of software exists that could help restore and enhance the digital copies.

It doesn’t matter if this is a slow going process, there’s no deadline here.

If you have any recommendations for hardware equipment, software or documentation and protocols to read I’d be very grateful. I would prefer to do this using open source software but if there’s proprietary software that makes a meaningful difference I’m happy to consider it.

(I know how to search the web myself, so I’m looking for advice from folks with practical experience, not just a Google search hit or whatever an LLM misgenerated.)

Boost would be appreciated since unfortunately I’m short on folks with this type of knowledge in my own social circles.

Student Reporters Offer a Lesson on World Press Freedom Day

The escalating authoritarianism we’re witnessing in the crackdown on college campuses is, in part, a by-product of a media system that fails to hold powerful interests accountable for the lies they tell.

Its 2024 and we have a caucus of National MPs shaking in their boots and terrified of Julie Ann Genter and I hazard a guess terrified of Chloe Swarbrick. It doesn’t say much for their ability to survive much longer in Politics. It’s a sad day indeed for the National Party and the Coalition of Chaos.

@CarolynStirling There are some deeper issues that are not being examined, I think. Context is everything and what gets lost in the "mad women" narrative is that those who campaign for evidence-based justice (social, environmental, climate) are repeatedly traumatised by the indifference of those who enjoy systemic privilege. Trauma survivors don't always behave with circumspection and stuffy deference, and that gets the keepers of the status quo harrumphing and demanding fealty.

At a comics and disability workshop yesterday, Charles Hatfield introduced us to ‘shapereaders’ when I asked him about how we might possibly imagine comics for the blind. Shapereaders are a new type of haptic language that are highly suggestive of comics and I’m fascinated by how they might be used. On their page, check out the novel Arctic Circle under the ‘Photos’ tab. https://shapereader.org/

Forbidden Links

Malcolm Coles: 10+ years ago I created an annual list of websites that FORBADE you from linking to them, DEMANDED you write to ask for permission or LIMITED links to only their home page. Royal Mail even promised to post me a paper licence. Now a decade has passed, let’s see who’s still doing it … And yes I’ve linked to your websites to prove this.

This is awesome: 🙌🏻

The Baltic countries are raising the middle finger to Putin and switching their railway from the old Russian width to European width, and building an enormous railway all the way from Helsinki in Finland to Warsaw in Poland, where it connects to the existing European railway system.

249 kph means 3½ hour rides between European capitals — using clean electrical energy thereby helping our climate too.

B1M has a video about the Rail Baltica:

The ruling class is going to do everything they can to increase their control over what people can see on the Internet. The support for Palestine took them by surprise and they are in panic mode over the possibilities that exist online for the sharing of information and experiences across borders, the extension of solidarity between oppressed peoples everywhere.

It's not in the advertiser's interest either. If someone wants to block ads, but is stopped from doing so by Google's fuckery, there's a darned near 0% chance that they'll click the ad or buy the advertiser's product. It's more likely that they'll be annoyed and mentally associate that annoyance with the advertiser's brand. Showing ads to this cohort is a net negative for advertisers. The only party who benefits is Google, collecting money for showing ads that have no hope of leading to a sale, and annoying some users enough to drive them to pay them to make the ads stop.

Research has shown that flexibility, security and autonomy in the workplace are strong determinants of health.

And new research shows that employees who don’t have control over their work schedule take a serious hit.

Why employers should care, besides just being good employers:
When workers aren’t feeling well mentally, they’re less productive and more likely to miss work. Their creativity, collaboration and ability to meet job demands also suffer.
