@LovesTha@floss.social

A melbournian with many interests:

  • Christian (very liberal)
  • Embedded Linux Engineer
  • Magic The Gathering judge
  • Mechanical keyboard enthusiast (mostly DIY, all very small, Colemak layout)
  • Trying to get into woodworking

All too often I come off as argumentative, I'm working on it but definitely a work in progress. Also frequently more pedantic than I'm comfortable with.

You may have noticed: As I study Linux's code I keep writing "(rabbithole)"!

Linux consists of numerous small components which are mostly self-contained (less so for [un]loading modules), but where they're not we quickly land in a quagmire of interrelated components. Given just how foundational they are!

Then there's all the locks: So many peripherals attempting to control the timing!

@alcinnz Abstraction and separation is awesome. Right up till when it makes something impossible and then things just have to be messy and interdependent :)

If you wash and dry a load of laundry, you also have to be prepared to fold it, and put it away. It's not really helping otherwise.

LovesTha,
@LovesTha@floss.social avatar

@RickiTarr The folding part is the bit I enjoy.

And nearly everyone should be responsible for putting away their own laundry. One should only ever have themself to blame for being unable to find a piece of clothing in their own wardrobe. (Children graduate to putting away their clothes when they graduate to dressing themselves)

What is a moderate quality 20+20W amp. Anything that will connect to a generic PC is acceptable (aux, usb are the obvious options)

And by moderate quality I mean a noise floor low enough the average person isn't going to complain.

I don't fully understand all of the USB HID things, but I understand that the standard keyboard device has 6KRO limit, and this mode must be used for interacting with old BIOSes.

The NKRO version can be enabled on some keyboards, but isn't the default on many so they work from power on in the BIOS.

Is there a reason a keyboard doesn't use both? Register the first 6 keys on the simple one, but when a 7th key is pressed that goes through the NKRO?

The toll road scam: A government-made monopoly you pay for.

Here's a funny-because-it's-true take on Transurban and the poor tax it imposes, from Punter's Politics:

I know there is a new tool that does this, but my search foo is weak today.

What is the tool for syncing (with e2ee) command history between computers?

@revk (learning not acusing) what are the colours on that chart. I'm surprised how much of the time is essentially 0's and by how high your consumption is.

This is surprisingly .

Next keyboard is making this more pronounced with low profile switches for the thumb keys. If low profile swithcns and caps are too low I can just put on higher profile caps.

Same keyboard but a lower angle shot giving an profile view. The grid caps barely come up to the bottom of the other caps. The alpha caps are nearly 1cm taller

American Motorcyclist Association Urges DOT to Act on Automated Driver System Regulations Following Tragic Collision (americanmotorcyclist.com)

PICKERINGTON, Ohio (April 26, 2024) — In the wake of the most recent tragedy involving a fatal collision between a Tesla vehicle in autopilot mode and a motorcyclist in Washington state, the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) once again urges the Department of Transportation (DOT) to strengthen Automated Driving System...

@xmunk @Showroom7561 the impression we are there already is only marginally more dangerous than thinking it is only 5~10 years off. Full self driving is still very hard.

Someone launching a nix fork. Which is a good thing.

Time to move off has finally come. So many to choose from, though. Makes my head spin 😵

I need one with:

  1. Great support (maybe get that webcam working finally)

  2. Smooth & slick / (I'm less of a terminal guy)

  3. Focus on , security-first approach (but not the ones that are made for James Bond)

What do you suggest?

LovesTha,
@LovesTha@floss.social avatar

@smallcircles Have a look at the big desktop environments and pick which one you think is slick (it is such a personal choice), look at their list of distributions that they recommend/ensure this desktop environment is up to date and support offered at the top level for any distribution you choose. Most big distros have a reasonable level of support for the biggest desktop environments, but it is not universal and you may want a less popular one.

A distro with good SELinux support gives you #3

Really I'm of the view that a hard fork of mastodon is (probably) not the right solution, but it's likely my view on that is for different reasons than a lot of other people who have talked about it (and also substantially similar in some respects, but with some core differences).

But if you want to do the work and it energizes you then go forth. It just seems to be more hassle than I suspect it will be worth versus just building a ground-up implementation (which is already plenty of work).

LovesTha,
@LovesTha@floss.social avatar

@hrefna A big pro for hard fork is that migrating data isn't an issue. Forking a large code base definitely has it's issues, but I can see data migration as a sticky issue.

@tone212_ @Seagoon_ Firstly look at the bill to see when actual reads have been used versus estimates. They are probably estimating usage and will adjust when a real reading is done.

LovesTha,
@LovesTha@floss.social avatar

@Seagoon_ @ajsadauskas That could be way too much or nearly nothing, all depends on the chillis used :)

LovesTha,
@LovesTha@floss.social avatar

@Salvo @Seagoon_ Sadly the last 5 years have proven that Tesla was not the good option :(

5 years ago was also when the phase out of 3G was announced....

LovesTha,
@LovesTha@floss.social avatar

@tone212_ very high, if that is from two actual reads I'd be talking to a plumber about your gas leak.

LovesTha,
@LovesTha@floss.social avatar

@ajsadauskas @Seagoon_ pity that those images don't federate :(

@Seagoon_ @ajsadauskas so 8 is a moderate heat. Sounds tasty

Popquiz: Which component of an OS is the most complex?

I could relate this to my hardware-browser hypothetical, but that's pretty irrelevant.

(I'm leaving off scheduling, since that's as complex or simple as you want it)

LovesTha,
@LovesTha@floss.social avatar

@alcinnz only voting against speech synthesis because that shouldn't be part of an OS

LovesTha,
@LovesTha@floss.social avatar

@alcinnz Rethinking it: Time is the only one of these options I have a hard time thinking a functional OS must include. The other three are optional in certain types of OS

LovesTha,
@LovesTha@floss.social avatar

@alcinnz Yeah, boot count + seconds since boot does work for many systems.
