I'm currently using a self hosted instance of XWiki on my NAS to write down long term notes just for myself. But it runs very slow with the database and limited hardware ressources. And since I only access it from my Windows PC on my LAN I figured I'd just need an application that does the same job and save the files on my NAS....
Welcome! As far as I'm aware, kbin is web only at this time and there aren't any apps available yet.
Having said that, I am using Lemmy, which is another project in the fediverse (similar to kbin). Lemmy users can view and post to kbin and vice-versa. Lemmy has apps available for both Android (Jerboa) and iOS (mlem) and I'm using it to comment to your post on kbin from Lemmy.
I currently use an Ubuntu distro (Mint) with Plex installed serving media to my local network. I installed docker last night so I can test out some photo hosting services....
Yup! I made the move about 5 years ago and never looked back since. Native performance, and it makes things super portable and very easy to move to another server. Just copy the docker volume and start the container on the new machine.
Super easy to switch between various versions too, if needed. And it also reduces chances of breaking stuff.

Thank you! I have been looking into messing around with Plex Meta Manager for a while, but kept putting it off. I think I know what I'm doing this weekend :D
ou might have seen that we've been defederated from beehaw.org. I think there's some necessary context to understand what this means to the users on this instance....
Very well said, and I agree 100%. It's like burning down a house to smoke out a rat. Or using a sledgehammer to crack a nut. Or shooting flies with a canon... you get the point.
Same here, and I agree with you. I think this whole reddit fiasco will cause enough migration to sustain Lemmy and lead to organic growth over time. And I think this is best for Lemmy in the long term.
Like for the past few years, browsing reddit is basically a daily routine for me. Now Reddit is dying, I feel like a part of me died. A website filled with many years of content... will soon be gone. I heard rumours that they are planning to purge the site of "undesirable" content before their IPO. I fear same thing will happen...
Same, I am going through the same exact feeling as you are. I had similar existential thoughts on how everything is temporary and fleeting, websites and life... (please don't judge haha, I really had these thoughts)
In a way, Lemmy is exciting and I've got used to it very quickly. It feels like the reddit of old and is surprisingly comfy. However, reddit was a part of some of the best years of my life and helped me become what I'm today personally and professionally. There is a wealth of information on reddit and I hope that doesn't go away.
I will really really miss using reddit, and it will hurt in the short term, but I believe it will be a good thing eventually, especially if the Fediverse replaces it (at least to some extent). Hopefully then we can avoid this happening again and end this cycle.
The Bank of Canada (BoC) surprised the market with a rate hike last week, and BMO doesn’t think it was the last one. Canada’s economy is running so hot, the market now expects at least two more rate hikes. It’ll almost certainly lead to higher mortgage rates, which will throttle demand for housing at these prices. That’s...
It's a shitty situation all around. If BoC doesn't do this, inflation runs high and that will ruin affordability even more. If they continue increasing, that again ruins affordability by increasing mortgage costs, which is the biggest expense for majority of people.
In my naïve opinion, we probably need to slow down immigration, which will cool down housing and probably better long term. But then again, that will cause shortage of labor and output. That in turn is probably going to lead to higher prices again (I could be wayyyy wrong though)
I'm no expert, but this is my view on the whole situation. Would like someone with more knowledge to provide their insight.

Maybe I'm just feeling nostalgic for forums. Maybe it would clutter up the comments. What do you all think?
