Today a consortium the company I work for is part of we prepared a meeting on Monday where we'll defend a grant application. When it came to who was gonna present or answer questions people were very protective of me and two other people because "you are still so young, we don't want to overwhelm you".

I am 44 years old.

Boomers are really fucking Out of touch with reality.

Teilzeitquote geht hoch, was ja oft problematisiert wird.

We really live in the dumbest world. Yes, many meetings are run (and documented) badly. And you shouldn't go to them. No agenda, no attendance has been my baseline policy for a while.

But what is that guy trying to do? Get people to run better meetings? No. He just wants to build a machine that allows you to pretend you were there. Because even a "AI bot writes a summary" thing (which doesn't really work but well) does not include the faked presence. But he thinks he needs that. Why? What's the problem that guy is trying to solve? Who is he solving it for? And has he understood the actual problem?

Like many people hate meetings for (as I said above) often very good reasons. But meetings also serve other less tangible functions of building trust, understanding of one another, a feeling of belonging and shared values. All things that he's not even addressing.

This is the prototypical "let's just slap AI on" and it's painful to watch the amount of money and people's time we throw on those pointless activities.

Brian Merchant comes to the same conclusions I outlined in my 2023 Re:Publica talk:

"Generative AI may or may not be a flash in the pan, but it can be a wrecking ball to your job regardless, especially if your boss is looking for an excuse to cut costs or to appear innovative — and you should be ready"

TBH: About 90% off all "open source AI models" are nothing moe than blobs. They might be what used to be called "freeware" but nothing more.

tante, to random
@tante@tldr.nettime.org avatar

A quick glance shows that it's not that easy to determine what this model has actually been trained on and how which makes it at least a bit dubious for an open source project. Will have to dive in later

“Empty Innovation” at Re:Publica 2024

Under the motto "Who Cares" Re:Publica gathered a few thousand people in Berlin and I got to give a talk continuing the path I started out on with my last two talks in 2022 and 2023. Titled "Empty Innovation" I tried outlining my understanding of the patterns of the weird technological hypes we've gone through in the last years, why they happen and also what this mode of "innovation" does to us as people, communities and societies.

If the whole Windows Recall thing scares you and you are looking for options: For many people Linux just does the trick. If you need a browser, some office stuff, maybe a bit of image/media management, Linux absolutely got you covered. It probably will be annoying or something might be broken but that is the same with every operating system.

But before you install something, maybe have a chat with someone who knows a bit more about it to help you navigate the choices and to ensure that your workload is actually supported on Linux.

But it's no longer an OS just for experts. You can do almost anything graphically and a lot of shit just works.
