I had a very interesting conversation with @jero on our way to do some grocery shopping. Jero has some political views, I do have some of my own political views. We might agree or disagree on the small print but they are basically similar.

We were discussing effective contribution since I was defending preaching to the choir or creating ourselves anxiety with future problems in case the far-right wins (seems to be where Spain is heading to) in my very strong opinion is a waste of our time and energies. It doesn't only never help, it hinders the issue, it makes you want to think about whatever else, it destroys your attention, the subject becomes too loaded and you just want to dismiss it.

So, heading to the effective contribution subejct, he talked about France, the jillet-jeunes (pardon my French) or yellow vest protest and I focused on the "effective" part of the contribution. It's not just about protesting is about being smart enough to do it in ways that brings everybody onto your cause, and not against it. e.g.: climate change protests in London, creating chaos on the M25 are basically putting everybody and their mother against the Extinction Rebelion. While the French seem to be more effective with their chaos. They do it in ways that put PEOPLE against Macron.

I wonder what do you guys in the think are ways to making active contribution to make the world a better place that are efective.

Voting is the basis, effectivism in my current context can be measure on how your way makes the far-right lose at a general election.

I don't want to name parties and give them free publicity, because that doesn't help, but one of them wants to destroy the healthcare system in Spain and publicly has said they want to stop giving us HIV people the pills that keep us alive. Spain, like any country with access to for-profit social media, has become a fracture country where divisions are in opposites extremes. Facebook did that, Twitter did that. They realised negative emotions create long-term engagement with the ads of their platform, so they tinkered their algorithm to push hateful and angering content and polarised people.

Anxiety aside that this personal subject (retrovirals not been freE) could cause me, I think objectively that won't and can't happen so I'm not worried.

BUT I do want to actively and more than anything effectively do my VERY BEST to ensure they never get anywhere near power. How can I effectively manage to drive votes on the Idiocracy we live (people don't vote with their brains, ACCEPT it) to vote anything but the far-right?

Let's focus on the word I've highlighted to exhaustion: effective

Political issues need time and efficience. To make the time you need to know effective mean of doing the most with that time.

Now off to do some house chores. This is becoming Monday's routine: first groceries, then house cleaning. Move away cat, I'm hovering!

EDIT: The fediverse is not much different, it just feels healthier because we seem all united in our hatred of bigotry.

@maikelthedev @jero nothing really to add to the thrust of your conversation. I was just initially confused about how your method of grocery shopping was political 😅

@maikelthedev @jero yeah, I hate Nazis as much as the next level-headed person but I don’t think we’ll get rid of them with well-crafted words.

I've decided I'm not waiting and I'm learning German to a level high enough to pass all Goethe Institut Examinations starting from the most basic one.

The right time, WILL NEVER exist.

So, I'm going to check a time to get this done and assign Duolingo some time to do it. Unlike I did with English, with German I want to start from my own speaking. With English listening was (and still is) my best. I want a different order of perfectionism with German.

WHY IS GERMAN so important to me:

  1. Every one of my friends who know me properly say if I ever visit Berlin I won't ever leave.
  2. I want to be Brexit-independent and more EU-dependent, knowing the most spoken language of the EU gives me access to a huge market.
  3. Eventually I want to do a double degree in French/German but it requires elementary knowledge of one of them two.
  4. It's a challenge that I know I can do but won't do if I keep waiting for the right conditions.

EDIT: The real question guys is, what is a very long-running German shitty soap opera with LOADS of regional accents that I could easily find in youtube and has a GAY storyline. And yes I mean Eastender/Corrie/Emmerdale style (specially the latter, the only one I don't find insufrable because....Aaron Dingle) abstain from anything similar to Hollyoaks please.

@thatmanmatt@toottoot.eu avatar

@maikelthedev in before someone ‘splains that you don’t need German to live in Berlin.

Good luck to them getting anything bureaucratic done without it.

Jesus-efffing-Christ so adding on top of their pathetic interface to change address and/or add a phone to get a SALES call, I ended up using the live chat, who requested to call me on the phone, who called me to just act as gatekeeper of "why do you need a paid account..." before passing me over to a cloud engineer (not sure why I need that just to change from free to paid) like...da...fuck, I'm putting money on your pocket, does it matter why? It's none of your business, just make it a paid account.

What a waste of my time.

EDIT: To make matters worse, the nosy sales agent, just sends me back to the live-chat to talk with the cloud engineer but instead of passing me with them, he just closes the chat. I've been here 20-minutes you idiot. Now I need to start from scratch again.

@maikelthedev credit card was my problem. Signing up for a free thing, but their systems wouldn’t validate my credit card details, unlike absolutely every other system on the planet.

Does anyone here work for Oracle Cloud Infrastructure?

Your console SUCKS lemons.

Spanish numbers have 9 figures, always had, not 10. How on Earth do you want me to request a sales call if you're asking for 10 figures? Do you actually want to sell your products?

thatmanmatt,
@thatmanmatt@toottoot.eu avatar

@maikelthedev trying to sign up for Oracle Cloud to run a fediserver was easily the most miserable experience of its kind. Impenetrable forms, signup processes, eventually total failure and the most “we don’t care” response from their “customer” “care” 🚮

Back to work, and an email arrives:

[Employer Name] Careers via Docusign

“This document is password protected using your date of birth.”

Me: is this legitimate? I’m not expecting anything. Security training tells me not to open such things or enter personal data. Smells phishy, I’ll ask HR.

HR: did you try opening the link and entering your date of birth?

Me: (…) uh… no

thatmanmatt,
@thatmanmatt@toottoot.eu avatar

@tmfox I was asked to send the email via the HR ticketing system, so I imagine this is exactly what they’re going to do.

Turns out it is legit. A second email came within which was mention of the first and how important it was.

Logic? Not a strong point here.

HEADLINE (Daily Torygraph): 20mph roads blamed for rise in speeding

“The increasing use of 20mph speed limits has led to a record number of drivers being convicted for speeding.”

(…)

“Motoring firms blamed the rise in 20mph zones.”

Le sigh. Once again, speeding drivers and their support groups will look to anything except their own behaviour to hang the consequences of their own behaviour on.

@ivory a weird thing that is happening on iOS, the keyboard repeatedly disappearing when crafting a toot. Is this something you know about?

@ivory it does 😕

I’m typing, then pause for a second, and the keyboard disappears, I’m not touching the screen at the time.

Hmm. They’ve sent me a white keyboard. My MacBook is grey and my mouse is black but OK.

Problem is that’s there’s very little to distinguish work keyboard from personal keyboard. Personal has UK layout (£ key, full size Return), work has US layout (ridiculous single row Return key).

I can see myself typing with the wrong one half the time, and cursing that my paragraphs are all \\s the rest of the time.

@santiago @konstantin I’ve already hit \ twice 😡

The whole ‘multiple input devices’ thing is… complicated. First: paranoid work IT don’t like mixing personal and work devices and accessories.

Second: even if possible, I can’t find a convenient* way of using one (BT) keyboard, one (BT) mouse and one display, with either work MacBook OR personal Mac mini. Sometimes the BT mice like to both pair with the Mac mini.
