Interesting comment about SGI leadership knowing about the problems they were facing and still being unable to come up with a way to handle them.

@danluu One of the main points in the Innovators Dilemma is exactly this. Even when a company can see the iceberg looming ahead, it is still constitutionally incapable of changing course because all its internal architecture and incentives are optimised for the current business model.

This is part of the nature of . Trumpism claims to be capitalist, but that's really only part of its faux traditionalism. However trumpism rejects enlightenment ideas like democracy and the rule of law, and so rejecting actual capitalism is just a piece with this. I've written more here:

Should the government directly own and operate railways?

tokensane,
@tokensane@mastodon.me.uk avatar

@tml I mean that the thing is government property and the employees are government employees, as opposed to the government paying private companies to do it.

tokensane, (edited )
@tokensane@mastodon.me.uk avatar

@tml I'm sure that the people running signalling systems and doing track maintenance will be fascinated to hear that. But yes, I mean the rolling stock too.

tokensane,
@tokensane@mastodon.me.uk avatar

@tml Because bandwidth is limited and I'm actually more interested in the differences between the answers. That's why all the questions have identical wording.

tokensane,
@tokensane@mastodon.me.uk avatar

@tml BTW, in the UK in the 60s and 70s the government did directly own and operate an airline, car factories, the railways and a computer maker.

tokensane,
@tokensane@mastodon.me.uk avatar

@tml No, I think I'd count SNCF as government owned and operated. If the government owns the company then the employees are effectively government employees.

tokensane,
@tokensane@mastodon.me.uk avatar

@tml Yes, that's pretty much it. Seems to me that if the govt hold a controlling share in a company then its effectively a government department, regardless of what it says on the letterhead.

@Gurre @louisrcouture Is it? I recall exposes about beaches covered in sewage back in the 70s.

tokensane,

@louisrcouture The question is "should", not "does".
