Today in scams, a dodgy MyGov email with a handy QR code to help you log in and claim an early tax refund!

Which is, of course, a SCAM. A total and absolute scam.

Scoop: I obtained the contract Samsung requires independent shops to sign to buy phone repair parts from them.

It requires:

  • "Daily" dumps of customer data
  • The "immediate destruction" of any phones a shop comes across that has third-party parts

I strongly believe, if Trump is reelected, he will finally get a border wall.

Because Canada will gladly pay for it.

It’s been a couple of years since I last read the Merchant Princes series by @cstross, which I revisit every so often - I’ve just finished re-reading The Bloodline Feud, which I loved and would highly recommend if you want a different take on parallel worlds, industrial development, culture clash and much, much more. I’m straight onto the next book now!

Alright, it's official. The dangerous & misguided Kids Online Safety Act () will go to a "mark up" vote in the House Energy & Commerce Committee this morning, Thursday, May 23. THIS IS JUST A SUBCOMMITTEE VOTE. WE CAN STILL STOP OR FIX THIS BILL! https://www.stopkosa.com

evangreer,
@evangreer@mastodon.online avatar

Some important things: First,
has not been fixed. There have been several rounds of changes to the bill, some of which have convinced large DC-based NGOs to drop their opposition, but there is still a large coalition of LGBTQ, human rights, racial justice groups opposed.

Fire up the shredders for the ☠️

It’s so long, see you never 🤞 for this flawed legislation that would’ve removed controls over our data and handed power to UK government bodies and companies.

ORG and civil society organisations fought the Bill to ensure it wasn’t just nodded into law 🔥

That's odd. The UK election is being held on the USA's Independence Day, while the US election is being held on the UK's Guy Fawkes Night.

Don’t know if we can draw anything from that, but it's curious...

The crash of 2008 imparted many lessons to people who were only dimly aware of finance, especially how complexity was a way of disguising fraud and recklessness. That was really the first lesson of 2008: "financial engineering" is mostly a way of obscuring crime behind a screen of technical jargon.

Okay, UK folks, it's on. Few of the choices are great, but the Tories have to go. Make sure you're registered to vote. Set up a postal vote if you'll be on holiday on July 4th. Make sure students are registered in the place where they'll be then, as uni terms will be over. Make sure you've got suitable ID. Especially make sure to do all of this if you are in a marginal constituency, cos that's where the election is decided.

More on Election 2024:

Rishi Sunak has stated its going to be about who the public trusts...

Not the ground on which he might be best advised to fight after a decade & half of scandals, corruption & crisis....

Indeed, he says he's going to 'earn our trust'.... well given he's been PM for some time, and is (therefore) admitting he hasn't earnt our trust already, this looks like howl statements scripted by a advisor, unless he's monumentally out of touch.... oh, hold on

The UK government is completely out of step with other European countries on Israel and Gaza.

France and Germany support the ICC in issuing an arrest warrant for Netanyahu.

Spain, Ireland and Norway will today announce they recognise Palestine as a state.

Meanwhile, Tory ministers seek to punish public bodies who don’t want to do business with a state that has killed 34,000+ people - mostly women and children.

Wanting to hold Netanyahu (and Hamas) accountable for war crimes is rational.
